I was actually encouraged to try eskrima from a friend who is a Doce Pares Esrkima practitioner for…read morealmost 10 years (and counting!) but never had the time to give it a try. I've always known that eskrima is one of the best self defense martial arts to learn. However, after jumping onto other activities and family, my interest to do so began to fall off the wayside. My love for the Martial Art of eskrima was rejuvenated again by this same good friend of mine after he shared the news that his team - Doce Pares/San Diego was expanding their martial art school to the South Bay area (Doce Pares/South Bay/Bonita)...I couldn't believe it because I always wanted to give it a try but it was a bit too far for me to train regularly. Now that they have a new school only 10 minutes away from home - there was no excuse for me not to give it a go! The opportunity to train in eskrima presented itself at the perfect time for me as I was injured from another martial art and missed the camaraderie and family that training martial arts brings. Not only that but learning any martial art for self defense first - should always be your reason to learn any form of martial arts to begin with. So I jumped on the opportunity to give it a 2 week trial and have been training at Doce Pares Bonita since the school had opened in February of this year. Instructor Guro Jon and Guro Howie are well versed and very articulate in their instruction; this is something that is a must for me to learn anything #1. The Instructors must be knowledgeable and patient enough to teach - and they do this quite effortlessly and effectively! Don't take it from me, come join a class and see for yourself first hand. They follow curriculum and as you progress you will see how everything come together as time goes by and it's a beautiful thing when things start making sense. Doce Pares is well renowned nationally and internationally. Look them up on YouTube, Google them or even follow them on social media - they are everywhere! This local Doce Pares chapter have been on local news stations as well. To finally have a school within my area has been great for me. They compete and also participate in demos if that is something that may interest you. So far I've been able to participate in 3 demos one being on the big stage at Petco Park at a recent Filipino Heritage event during a Padres Game! I was not one that liked to do stuff like that but I actually enjoyed the experience and did 2 more after that! Hope to do more in the near future if the opportunity presents itself. :) Again, whether its for self defense, self improvement, stay active, develop self confidence or just a desire to learn something new - come see us at Bonita and try Doce Pares Eskrima for yourself. Guro Jon (Lead Instructor) is a great teacher and will make your eskrima experience an enjoyable one. He covers details in his instruction to make it easy to understand and apply. The higher ranked students are very helpful and supportive... with no egos to worry about here. And most of all - it's a non hostile learning environment for ALL AGES. There are kids as well as adult classes to choose from. The gym has mirrors, it's well ventilated and clean. Everyone is in Doce Pares approved gi (or uniforms) so there is a sense of uniformity and cohesion as a group which is great. Sticks and other gear are also available to you by the school if you decide to come and try it out. Anyway, I think I've covered most of what I've experienced so far....again, come check us out and grow with us here at Doce Pares Bonita! OH Yeah !, How many 3,4and 5 years old children do you know that have... DIRTY LAUNDRY TO AIR OUT... I am sorry but you need to get out more often. Whatever your problems are, price, accepted, did not understand the program , did not like the instructor. Those are your problems. The staff refused and told me I had to sign up for a tour pass first. After taking the time to do the tour pass like they asked, they STILL refused to let me use the restroom. Completely unreasonable and honestly embarrassing customer service. It felt more about control and policies than basic human decency. First impressions matter, and this experience guaranteed I'll never consider joining this gym. There are plenty of other gyms that know how to treat people respectfully.
