Great spot for shopping, especially for the more niche items. They carry basically everything, they have a decent amount of organic options but not as many as other stores. Prices can be a little higher than say Aldi, but they also offer a lot more selection. This is where I come when I want anything that's outside the normal American diet (although they have that too), they have tons of fresh produce and other food from seemingly every corner of the world. read more

Traffic and weather were miserable as I was driving from Rockford IL. back to Madison, as as I sat in a busy intersection thinking about how terrible the glare along the road was (could NOT see the lane division lines) as the long red lights reach from cars along the rain glossed roadway, I simply wanted to Get back on the freeway where lines are clearly seen and I'm doing 80+ and able to get clear of harms way, meaning every other car traveling in sight. Seeing to my left a large green word PRODUCE beneath crimson Valli, I decided I was really wanting arugula when I got home but there was not anymore. Food stuff is sparse having not stocked my new kitchen pantry with much. U turn in a red light, and I find the entrance to the parking lot. At first impression the store was long deep but a narrow neighborhood market, but that was deceptive, the entry was just the gauntlet leading to a vast supermarket. Massive and well presented produce. I loved it. Prices were in all appearances very good. Grabbed a package of rocket (arugula) and some bulb green scallions celery (something I've repeatedly forgotten every time I actually went to get it last week) Wandering into the meats I'm astounded that this place is NOT like the type of ethnic grocery that I've generally encountered chickens feets all in a pile looking all freaky for the vanilla people who would run away horrified in Middleton where all the chopped up animal parts bare zero evidence of the reality of where there hamburgers and stuff pork chops call ground zero! Big languid tongues of cows and pigs each in their segregated pens! Whole legs, things that look as though they'd be in the adult area of certain toy stores that are actually expensive cuts that restaurants make look beautiful and mouthwatering. The aisle for Indian foods are labeled as such. And lots of items. Mexican cuisine in the Mexican lane. I wandered past the Jewish shelves kosher stuff (damn, just realized I forgot the box of salt I need) and see matzo balls and some ugly looking crackers, at I think they were crackers But looking high and low I NEVER found the ITALIAN aisle. I found the ORIENTAL district represented, in the traditional wording before Asian was deemed to be the only acceptable descriptor. Lol. Guess where I finally found the Italian fixings? In the NOODLES row. across from TOMATO SAUCE, but not with any particularly untypical noodle shapes. Very generic, but I did score some nice nested tagliatelle. The Greek stuff was in the Mediterranean, where I spied Spanish items. Nowhere near I noted: Latin/Mexican goods. I loved the place. I want to return. The reason for 4 stars is petty, but they only have the giant basket style carts. I shop for my food using the streamlined truncated double decker basket carts. i, personally, am appalled at the low reviews. I think many are beyond petty. I reside in town of 3k, & drive a great distance to shop there. The variety of fresh fruit & produce is endless, with even rare to find items, and extremely fresh. Their "fresh" section is larger than any other store I have shopped in Illinois. Yes, lines can be long during peak hours. So what. Shop off hours as I do. No waiting in wee store in my town, but could tie a cucumber in a knot!! Fresh produce means vitamins are stillthere & are imperative for me. Encounter a rude employee report to store, not here where it does no good. Got some mold on pastry/bread? Hysterical, certainly rare, but the norm in teeny town stores.Valli includes "produce" in their name for a reason. Yes, some basic items can be a bit higher priced than u could find elsewhere, but with the awesome produce prices, I dont mind, as total is still lower than purchasing in wee store in my town. Of all stores visited they are the only one to carry Kashia pieroge, closest to homemade Polish ever. And sauerkraut I have searched for. Other specialty items as well. Look, Valli has the best fresh food in the area. Being involved with Instacart is a huge mistake. I'm disabled and have had bad experiences with Instacart; but the inexperienced picker wrote, 'Not available', for some very obvious things Valli has, instead of asking for help. Valli apologised, but as long as they use Instacart, when I next need goods, I'll get a rider car and get my goods myself. read more

Yes, I am giving this place five stars and they have earned every one of hem! I live in California, and I can tell you we don't have anything quit like this place, which is a shame because this grocery store is freakin' amazing! The produce department is to die for. It is so large you could easily get lost in it. The produce is big beautifully colored and shiny. They have a great selection of regular and ethnic fruits and vegetables, including some I've never heard of. We filled the cart, even though we'd just come from Sam's Club. I love to cook ethnic foods and am a frequent visitor to the ethnic aisle in my local supermarket back home. Valli Produce has all my staples covered: Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Hispanic, and Indian. They also have a few other ethnic aisles to cover a few more groups: Greek, Middle Eastern, German, Polish, Swedish, Bulgarian... What kind of food is Bulgarian. I am not sure, but if you DO know you can buy everything you need here! All of their special departments are clearly performing up to snuff: bakery, fresh butcher shop, fresh fish market, ones, beers and spirits. Their selection of craft beers and specialty liqueurs (pumpkin pie liqueur?) is out of this world and there are aisle after aisle full of them. I was fascinated by the wine chiller which was filled with ice cold water. You could purchase any wine in the store and by holding the bottle in the ice cold water you could chill it ICE COLD in 5 minutes. WE NEED THESE IN CALIFORNIA! I love love this grocery store. I tried many times to get the ad delivered to me like many did in the area. Just couldn't because we were just outside their mailing zone. We were only 5min. away. Still, just went online every Tuesday night to their site to check out the specials. We'd write down what we wanted to be sure to get. The big positives we loved about this grocery store is the wide variety of fruits and vegetables and a very wide variety of meats and cheeses. All at ridiculously low prices compared to where we are now. Goods were imported from all over the world, and they were fresh, good quality. Through the seasons the varieties would change and something in season would bring the prices down. Getting kiwi 8 for $1, grapes for .99\lb, lg basket strawberries for $3, limes and lemons 4 for $1, box of mango (9-12ct) for $10, etc. Heading over the smoked and cured meats was a specialty of ours. Getting to know the people who worked behind the counter taking and putting your order together was always so much fun. At first, we were a little shy but once we got the hang of it we were calling out as if we were auctioneers. Our specialty was getting the meat ends and cheese ends. Whatever they had was $1.50\lb (heard they moved the price up recently). You don't get to choose but we liked it all. It gave us a chance to eat what may have been out of our budget or maybe we never thought of trying. And that's how I became a cheese lover. Now, I regret not having the wide selection here. Parking might get a little tricky but always seem to get a spot not having to drive around a lot. read more

Today I visited the store and was admonished by a young clerk at the checkout. I read the notices about staying behind the blue line and the 6 foot separation. As the person ahead of me stepped down to place her groceries in her cart I approached the checkout counter. The clerk snapped at me to remain behind the blue line until the previous customer left. The distance between where I was standing and the customer was over 15 feet. I went back behind the line. I then noticed that the checkout line next to me was much closer to me than the distance between the previous customer. If the intention is to provide a 15 foot buffer zone then the notices should state to approach once the customer in front of you has left or when told to approach by the clerk. The checkout counters should then be spaced to every other one to make all distances equal. While I was there many other people did the same thing I did so the notices must be confusing. I spent over 40 years as a hazardous materials and chemical warfare specialist so this is not just a random rant. read more

Out of all groceries I've been to in the area, Valli has the widest selection of fruits and vegetables. They offer some items I've never seen before which stimulates the creative cooking center to try something new and exciting. Macaroni and cheese can take on a whole new meaning here. Now for the best part. This place has corn (elote) cart right inside the store. CORN!!!!! Walmart eat your heart out. Don't even get me started on the taco and tamale restaurant in front of checkout. If you are a lover of all things Hispanic/Latin then this is the store for you. Want to try making posole for the first time? How about arepa? What if you decide to go out of the box and make Russian, German, or Indian? This is the place to go for all things cultural and worldly. If you only have 5 bucks to your name and you want veggies for dinner then come here and ransack the clearance veggie rack...a great way to buy a ton of veggies for a couple bucks and still make use of the "almost expired" items so they don't have to be thrown out. Great vegetable and herb selection. They have many unique food items and a large Hispanic, Polish, and German food section. They also prepackaged all of their candy with super low prices. You can get a pound of gummy bears for under $3. When I purchase lunch meat, I will only buy it from here. They have a much bigger selection than schnucks and MUCH cheaper prices. If you purchase the brands on sale that week, you can get a pound of cheese for under $3 and meat for $4. I am also a huge fan of their bakery. They have wonderful Italian cookies and great selections of cake slices, stuffed cookies, cannolis, and other stuff. You can't go wrong at Valli! read more

I use to shop at Valli all the time. Now I never to rarely shop there. There stores are clean. They have a large variety of foods and items you can't get elsewhere. But, their prices are now too high. If you do shop there stop at their bakery, they have wonderful fresh bakery items. Shop some place else for everyday items such as soups, breads, meats and so on. I've been shopping at valli produce on E. State st in Rockford ,IL. For years because it's an INTERNATIONAL MARKET and its the only place I can find certain products. I usually shop in the evening if I need something from the deli because we don't eat pork and there's only one worker that remembers our family and has no problem using a clean slicer or a cheese slicer for us. I believe the woman's name is Kelcy and she's very helpful, but she works with the same man everytime I go and he's been so rude, he once refused to use a different slicer, and said "what's wrong with a little swine?" This embarrassed my wife. I asked for his name. The girl upfront said his name is Louis. I asked for his manager and was told he was already gone. About a week and a half I was there, Kelcy was waiting on me, and the man Louis was complaining about the owner of the store to a customer. He said the owner was "a stingy Italian! And he might as well be a Jew!" Are you kidding me? We won't be going back and we want people to know what's going on there. If he was my employee I would want to know what kind of person I had working for me. Apparently there's no diversity training. I saw other customers walk away in disgust, and the woman waiting on me apologized for him. I just think other people should know . Thank goodness my children weren't there to hear such hatefulness. read more

This is a pretty decent grocery store. They probably have the largest selection of ethnic food in the Rockford area. They especially stock up on the Indian and Hispanic groceries that are hard to find. They have very fresh vegetables that you wouldn't otherwise find at Woodmans/Schnucks/ or Walmart. They even have a huge selection of frozen ethnic food which is also hard to find in this area. The wine and beer selection is HUGE. Basically one side of the store is for wine/liquor. There is also a mexican/pizza place up front. I personally haven't tried the food, but it looks "interesting" read more

I frequently visit Schnucks on East State street just for their sushi bar. however, a few days ago I decided to try out valli's. when I got there, they had a "half off after now PM" sign hanging over the sushi cooler. what a deal! I picked up a crunchy shrimp tempura roll and a spicy shrimp roll. for $3.50 a piece that's a deal. when I got home, I noticed a majority of the rolls were stuffed with browning avocado and thought maybe that was why they were trying to get rid of them. I ate two shrimp tempura rolls and wanted to spit them out. they are nothing like the fresh ones over at Schnucks. you truly do get what you pay for. read more

The gentleman at the meat counter was extremely rude and would not help me because it was too close to closing all he had to do was tenderize my meat as the machine was right there and he refused it would have taken 2 minutes. People mainly go here for produce and the deli. Unfortunately the delivery has gotten out of control. They have unlabeled rolls of meat stacked on top of each other in the back of the display. They can't tell beef bologna from regular bologna. They can't tell smoked turkey from honey turkey. Plus they have no idea how long some of it has been in the case when asked.They rarely change gloves out they're using. They need to reset themselves in the deli. read more

Will never shop here ever again! So I bought some clementines. I opened the clementines and they were either almost rotten or covered with white mold. The man who sold them to me was now at the returns desk. Returns are not a simple process. He had to call a produce manager over to see if he would authorize the return. WTF! You have absolutely no problem selling me rotten produce but give me a hard time when I wish to make a return? You tell the produce manager I am returning the clementines because the are soft when even you can see that they are rotten! The other thing that completely pissed me off is that you refused to accept the return of a set of 3 disposable pans just because the plastic was removed from the side even though I bought it the day before and I have the receipt. You tell me you can't sell it. Really? I'd rather go to Walmart any day and not deal with this poor customer service! read more

Don't get your produce here if you expect it to last more than a couple of days. After a couple of days or even the next day, it will show its true age. And that goes for both stores in Rockford. If you can eat it really quick, you will pay cheap prices. But if you're buying for longevity, you'll have to pay more at a store like Schnucks. read more

Very large produce section in a complete grocery store. From the name I thought this place only sold produce but upon entering you will find an entire grocery store with a deli, bakery, good-sized meat department and even a fairly large liquor dept. The produce is the star of the show however with everything from apples and oranges to taro root, jack fruit, lemongrass, pea pods, bean sprouts, prickly pear, mushrooms, peppers, onions and kiwi. Beware - melons are sometimes sold by the pound! I have had good luck with everything at this store except the regular mangos and the deli. The mangos look good but are regularly brown inside. I finally just stopped buying them here. The Manila mangos are usually very good. The deli is hit and miss so I stopped using it also after getting honey ham instead of savory ham, twice. If you are careful and watch that you get the right product, the deli has a very large assortment of choices. The cashiers are almost always very helpful and polite which makes for a pleasant experience. read more

I ordered a graduation cake a couple of weeks ago. I changed the order a couple of times and they were very patient with me. Then when I rec'd the cake it was beautiful and de-li-cious!!!! The cake was moist, the whip cream perfect-not too sweet and the raspberry filling was great, and they didn't skimp on it either. The price was very reasonable as well!!! My fiance brought me here purely to show me the selections. His mom insisted. I should mention I have an obsession with spices and specialty items so I was definitely in my element. Also, the wine that we love (Cellar No. 8) is cheaper here than at the wine and liquor store in Woodman's. I was kinda pissed because we had just bought 5 bottles of it! I was very disappointed and embarrassed when three people tried and failed to figure out how to get the advertised free eggs. I wasted 1/2 hour and inconvenienced over a dozen customers. You would think either a cashier or the girl they call to help at a register or customer service would know or have access to a bar code to override. I really can't think of a reason right now to go back in there and be embarrassed again. Bought almost three pounds of ground chicken at 7:30 pm on Oct. 31st--one package/almost $12--with a sell by date of Nov. 2nd and I could smell it sealed in my refrigerator today--sealed! I have no problems with my refrigerator and it's set very cold and as a well regarded cook I know about proper food storage. I called the store tonight and "Emmalin" tells me that they're getting ready to close and to call back tomorrow. I ask for the store manager and she returns to the phone to tell me that "Augustin"--the store manager tells me to bring the meat in with a receipt because he "needs to return it to the meat department"! For what?! To repackage it? I told her that it stank and was already in the trash at the curb for pickup tomorrow morning and she suggested I dig it back out. I wondered about it when I purchased it as it was my first meat purchase there. It had to be old when it was ground to turn by its sell date! Bad meat. Really bad customer service. read more

I love the wide variety of produce, gourmet meats and cheeses, and seafood available at Valli. It's a great place to get some of those unusual ingredients needed for different ethnic dishes. But what really prompted me to write this review is that I wanted to give a special shout out to a young man by the name of Christian who was our cashier a couple of weeks ago (11/22/2015), when we made our trek to the East State Street location to purchase provisions for our Thanksgiving meal. Even though the store was crowded, he greeted each customer with a warm smile. He was efficient in cashiering, but he was also extra meticulous with bagging our groceries. We had a pretty large order, and as he was scanning items, he looked over other items on the conveyer belt, and picked out things to bag together -- all the dairy together in one bag, produce in another, etc. He did this quickly and efficiently, and never lost his smile. Seems like a small thing, but it definitely made unpacking our groceries at home easier. We appreciated his efforts. I don't believe I've ever had a cashier be so courteous, pleasant, and careful in processing my grocery order. read more

this is a very affordable grocer in our town. could be cause their workers are not union? not sure. Anyway they have a lot of international foods here. European, Middle Eastern, Latino, African and American. Extensive liquor department also. Some organic options too. Fresh breads!! They have the best Bolillos in Rockford... those are French style Mexican rolls great for sandwiches. Lots of nuts, seeds, trail mixes, and of course lots of produce. The staff is predominately latin. They are all very friendly and helpful. What can I say it's in our blood to hospitable. They also have a restaurant that is run by San Jose's - a local Mexican restaurant. Their food is pretty tasty too. And of course since Valli is Italian owned they do offer Italian foods also in their café. Once again I would rather shop here then Walmart, Target or Schnucks.
