The staff will keep an eye out for certain items if you have something special i mind i.e. a certain type of wooden flooring. There are so many "smalls" but if I were renovating a home or flat in the local area, this would be my first stop if I wanted to make the place have an industrial, yet historic flair to it. Mantels, sinks, doors, toilets...the works. Have spoken with what seems to be the owner (manager?) and a staff member. Both are lovely. Props to them for such a wonderful business.

I like Habitat, don't get me wrong, but really, why bother when you can get good quality furniture for much less. Especially if you are a student! Which is perfect for this area. Flocks of students come and go through Leeds, moving every year and needing to get rid of or attain furniture every time they do. Junk Again are aware of this and have cleverly positioned themselves not far from the postcodes that are predominantly student populated. If you are looking for a cabinet, a table, or arm chair, or are looking to get rid of, a fridge, a freezer, or chimney pot, Junk Again is a great place to go. They are slightly chaotic but that just adds to that old fashioned feel of shops of this type. Plus no-one will look down their polished nose at you as they so often do in Habitat.

That, sadly, was not the case in the end but that's more to do with the Estate Agent and building than anything else. However, pretty much the only thing that we required for our move was a sofa and some arm chairs. Enter: Junk Again! My old housemate had spotted Junk Again on her way through Woodhouse and suggested that we tried here for a cheap second hand suite. I was game for any bargain and so when she called me, all a fluster, to tell me about this awesome sofa, two arm chairs and a pouffe for a mere £40, I came immediately to the scene. Yes. That's right. All that for forty flippin' pounds. The friendly chap explained that he had planned to have them cleaned but hadn't yet, so was willing to let them go for that much - all we needed to do was clean them. No probs, Handy Hire in Headingley solved that one for us dirt cheap too! We couldn't have been more chuffed. Inside you'll find an array of lovely old furniture and the odd antique, for seriously cheap prices. My advice is: if you're moving look here first. I've a few more things I need myself so I'm planning a re-visit very soon...

There are three floors of pre-war furniture, household objects, chandeliers, toys, medals, vintage jewellery and other collectibles. Over the years I've noticed the prices going up a little but it's still great value for money. The last time I went I came away with a beautiful vintage sewing box that I found amongst various ornaments and bric-á-brac. In the basement you'll find a café which does a mean weekend breakfast and serves good food throughout the day. The building itself is also noteworthy. Built in 1898, it was originally the Town Hall. The original mouldings and green tiles are still existence. The Antiques Village is a five minute walk from Levenshulme Station and a ten minute drive from Manchester City Centre.

On my last visit I fell in love with a long, low teek sideboard, the style of which forms the epitome of what you will find in here. Sadly at £350 I found myself jokingly singing "Santa Baby put a table under the tree.. for me" to my nonplussed boyfriend! Still, my retro therapy was completed when I purchased a more reasonable, but no less beautiful classic 60's bright orange glass ashtray for £15. The lady that owns the shop was happy to stand chatting to me about items she usually gets in and whats popular at the moment, i found her to be an extremely friendly person with lots of knowledge, which also includes an almost wiki style base of information on how to restore your much loved vintage furniture! There really are not enough places like this in Manchester, and the ones that are mildly comparable mostly sell "retro" stock that was shipped in yesterday and made in a factory last week.

My friend and I were having a bit of a wander in Shipley, as we'd gone to buy some material from the nearby haberdashery, and decided to have a bit of a browse and some lunch. Literally just next to the market, which is a bit strangely situated down underneath pavement level, stood Up Market. As soon as you enter, once you've stopped staring at the delightful items in the window display, you'll be wowed by the stuff inside. It was a treasure trove of fantastic rocking chairs, awesome fire place accessories, quirky chairs, old school tables and writing desks. Mirrors and old picture frames galore. Sweet little boxes and an exuberance of other perfect knick-knack gifts lie within. We were left to browse without feeling pressured to purchase anything and as we looked around we noticed that the prices were so reasonable! I've not been to a more reasonably priced antique and vintage shop in Leeds - with the exception of Poverty Aid! Whilst there may be larger shops to browse, this one had some truly unique pieces at much less than expected. I'm hoping to slowly furnish my house here and can't wait to go back for another browse - it's a fantastic place!

This is just down the road from a friends, and I can't thank her enough for introducing me to it! It's an absolute maze of wonder, floors and floors of rooms, filled with cabinets, pieces for auction, and an adorable cafe too. You can find all manner of trinkets, niknaks, some clothes, furniture, homewares, bits for your garden- basically, if you wanted, you could kit your whole life out here. Obviously, being so varied, not everything is to everyone's taste, but it is most certainly worth a look around, or just a cream tea!!

Yep,it was trawl around a garden centre sunday day for me and Mrs Z last week. To be honest I only went because I wanted a bacon sarnie from the caravan that parks outside,only for it to be not there anymore!! That's probably because the centre has recently open up a bistro on the first floor,which I will check out one day. Can anybody remember a time when garden centres only sold things for the garden? On Sunday at Gordon Riggs I had the opportunity to buy (Deep breath):- Candles,Locusts,Crickets,Rabbits,Bearded Dragons,Vases,Books,Paving stones,Bloody Meerkat tat,Plants,Incense sticks,Essential oils,Bird Food,Bird Tables,Bird poison (Not really),CD's,DVD's,Tins of minced beef and onions and a carvery. And that is a good thing! because when I go to a garden centre the last thing I want to look at is garden stuff,as I stated in last years review of All in One garden Centre I hate gardens and gardening, so the more non gardening related things they sell the better, which is why I have a soft spot for Gordons place, anything that stops me having to look at bulbs and seeds is a good thing. Although less Meerkat related stuff would be nice : )

Gordon Riggs is a great all year round garden centre which is conveniently located just off a new…read moremotorway extension and exist in Kingsway, Rochdale. The plant and flower stocks change seasonally and the items usually have helpful tips and information on the suitability. There are sections of the centre suitable for most purposes, from gravel and rocks to statues, fountains and pond liners. The pets section always has a great selection of fish too. My one gripe is that Christmas always comes VERY early to Gordon Riggs, with a strong emphasis on a very large (and impressive) seasonal lighting display. It could just do with arriving a few weeks or months later than it does though. That said, it's especially great for your pick of healthy, juicy christmas trees.
