A friend and I were headed to an MMA event just north of Oroville and needed a quick bite to eat, so pulled off and hit Yelp to find something good in the area. Vallarta Grill looked like a good option so we headed over. This was a Saturday evening (about 6pm)... they were busy, but had no trouble seating us within a couple minutes (the host had to duck out to clean the booth for us). The menu is very complete - lots of options! It was honestly tough to make a choice. I chose the Lamb Shank, which included an enchilada. I was given the choice of ground beef, shredded beef or chicken for the enchilada. I asked if I could somehow upgrade to a shrimp enchilada and was politely declined. My date chose the chile verde. I also ordered coconut shrimp as an appetizer. First up was the coconut shrimp - first impression: I was surprised at how "flat" they were! Obviously it was intentional, but flatter than anything I've seen or had before. I jokingly called them "road kill shrimp" and my date slapped me. They were good, though, and I understood and appreciated the reason(s) for flattening them - more surface area for the breading, even cooking and easy to scoop up the yummy sauce. Next up were the main dishes - the Lamb Shank was good... imo, I would have liked the sauce to be a little thicker, but the flavor was good. I really liked the enchilada too. I didn't have a ton of the rice and beans just because I normally don't eat much of that - but it was good, better than I've had elsewhere! I had a bite of my friend's chile verde too and give it a thumbs up. I love flan. I was full enough that I didn't need to order flan, but I couldn't leave without giving the flan a try. I'm glad I did! The flan was very good, some of the best I've had in a while. Overall, great meal and I wouldn't hesitate to drop by again if I was in the area. read more

After a long hike and drive I was excited to finally dig into some good food. I pulled into a busy plaza with plenty parking. The host was very friendly and I immediately got sat down. To my surprise they gave me complimentary chips and salsa with bean dip. It was good my favorite was the bean dip. The horchata had a little too much ice for me. I ordered a wet burrito (~$24) and it was decent. Everything was served to me so fast, excellent service. In my opinion it was on the more expensive side but it's a sit down restaurant so you're paying for that experience. Too hot to cook so we decided on fish tacos. Until we saw the menu. I try odd man out on menus. What I mean is I try the things that look most out of place on a menu. Tonight it was the lamb shank and enchilada plate. My husband ordered the seafood enchilada and we had the taquitos ranchero for appy. The lamb shank was out of this world. 5 stars just for the lamb. It was tender juicy and perfectly spiced. The seafood enchilada was OK, the seafood was a bit overpowered by the cheese and vegetables in enchilada. The frijoles were perfect as well. Service was fast, food great and ambiance was welcoming in as family at thanksgiving. I am kicking myself for being here 2 years before trying it. read more

There's not a lot of places to choose from for menudo in oroville. However we tried this place. Not good pricing or quality. The Menudo is plain w no taste. It comes w tortillas. Very thick condensed with oil. If you don't know the difference then try Casa Lupe in Gridley they are known for their menudo. I give this menudo a 5 at best out of ten. Way overpriced 19$ for one bowl of menudo is way overpriced for me. Especially if it doesn't taste that good. I'm so disappointed by majority food in this area. read more

Been in Oroville the last couple days and came to this restaurant. I'm always up for Mexican food and having heard everything here is inexpensive, this visit was a no-brainer. Your standard chips and salsa await as you as you sit down. (This isn't a dig in any way. I'm just pointing that out.) And you get a serving of beans. I liked their salsa, it had more spice and flavor than what I've experienced in other local Mexican restaurants. It also looked very red, which made it all the more appetizing. I ordered the enchiladas with chicken. It came with rice and beans. If you don't want one, you can substitute and get double rice, or double beans. The enchiladas definitely did it for me - stuffed with chicken, and the mole sauce they used had a little bit of a smokey flavor. I like mole to be on the savory side, and this mole was! Rice was fine, I didn't get those hard little bits that occasionally pop up when you cook rice. Beans are always good in my opinion, just don't eat too many of them. The service we had left something to be desired. Our waiter was disorganized and we had to summon a waitress waiting other tables for refills. It seemed only ours wasn't on top of things - all the other workers were putting in the effort. New staff member? From the outside it looks small, but on the inside it's a whole other story: ample seating and plenty of room in the back if you have a large group of people wanting to eat here. I love places where you can go right on in, sit down, order something quickly and get in and out in half an hour. And if the food's cheap, that's even better! I would be more than interested in visiting again someday in the near future. read more

Decided to come here for dinner and ordered the steak fajitas, asada taco, and al pastor taco. Loved that they give you an order of chips, salsa, and bean dip on the house! Our waiter was so funny and everything was incredible. My only complaint is that the steak and al pastor were dry. I'm excited to come back and try their other items. read more

Just about every part of this culinary experience was poor. The best part of the meal was the chips and salsa at the beginning, after. That, everything was bad. I had chicken mole, which was old stringy overcooked chicken in a sauce that was the " color" of mole sauce, but that was all. It was just awful. On our way to a three-day adventure, my man and I stopped here for lunch. It was about 100 degrees and this place didn't have AC. Fortunately, our booth was by a huge fan! Whew! That helped a lot! We started with a refreshing margarita, the perfect way to cool off! The yummy complimentary chips and salsa were served quickly. We shared the Shrimp Fajitas and they were tasty! brought a small group of disabled clients in for a meal and had a mostly great experience. The food was excellent--fresh, flavorful, and generously portioned. The owner stood out for his kindness, patience, and professionalism. He checked in, made sure we were comfortable, and created a welcoming atmosphere for all of us. The restaurant is also handicap accessible, which made a big difference for our group. That kind of thoughtfulness really matters. Unfortunately, one server made some really inappropriate comments in Spanish--clearly assuming we couldn't understand--saying she couldn't imagine dealing with people like my clients, and remarking that there was "no tip," even though we tipped digitally. She also complained about the "mess" we left, even though it was a perfectly normal level of cleanup for a table of five. That kind of attitude was hurtful and uncalled for. As a DSP (Direct Support Professional), I expect a basic level of respect when I bring my clients into any public space. That said, I want to give full credit to the owner and kitchen staff for making most of our visit truly enjoyable. I hope that server learns from the leadership example being set, because the rest of the team showed what real hospitality looks like. All in all? We spent the Memorial Day weekend in Oroville. With our expectations set low, we tried Vallarta Grill to quench our desire for Mexican food. Surprisingly the food was pretty dang good! They served us chips and salsa, which is to be expected, but they also serve us a small plate of refried beans. It's the first time ever eating at Mexican restaurants throughout California where we were served refried beans with our tortilla chips! The pairing was absolutely fabulous! I ordered the chili Colorado and my wife ordered the chicken enchilada plate. The food was absolutely delicious and the cost of our meal was reasonable! Wow!!! I've lived in Texas and southern CA, both of which have a lot of Mexican food places. I've always said I could eat Mexican food every day! Absolutely the best Mexican restaurant on the West Coast. I was here in 2017, and back then I was shocked and amazed by the spinach and shrimp enchiladas. Flash forward to today, January 2023. Those enchiladas are even better today than they were in 2017. You cannot find fresher Mexican food anywhere. And everything on the plate tasted fantastic. The rice was good, and the beans we're the best I've ever had. My service was fast and extremely friendly. My chips and salsa were always full as was my diet Coke. This is the kind of restaurant that you should drive out of your way to get to. As I mentioned during my review back in 2017, this place does not have great curb appeal. Although short staffed today (day after christmas) the food was still really good and consistent! Tried the steak fajitas for 2 and the steak had a nice sear on it. Plenty of onions and bell peppers. It comes with rice and beans along with sour cream, salsa and warm tortillas. I also ordered the 3.99 side dish of a beef enchilada which is well worth the price! Very expensive burritos that aren't worth the price ($20 each) and they DONT come with rice or beans, even though that's *what their menu says*, the waitresses will argue with you about it and charge you extra for rice and beans anyways. Chips and salsa also cost extra..again, despite what the menu says. I will not go back here and do not recommend. Not worth the price or the hassle. Stopped on a road trip and decided to eat here based on their reviews. We're so glad we did!!! We were greeting by a friendly host and our server was equally as nice. The chips and salsa were sooo good but the little plate of bean dip with cotija cheese was the best! We had the Chile Rellenos and the spinach and mushroom enchiladas. Both plates were ENORMOUS and delicious!!! Food came out piping hot and the flavors were incredible. We had enough to take home and reheat for dinner. It was just as good as leftovers.
