This is an incredible fencing club for all experience levels. Julie, the owner, is a 6-time world champion in BOTH foil and saber, as well as being the first woman to earn master in all three weapons (foil, saber, and epee). Julie is joined by other impressive coaches like Hender, Cameron, and Dayana, who are also incredible fencers. I took the beginning course and fell in love with the sport. It's not only a great physical workout, but it's also mentally challenging, which I really like. We reserved a group class for a birthday and had a fantastic time! Everyone had fun learning something new and a couple of us are seriously considering taking fencing up as a new sport. Definitely recommend for Family night or a birthday party. read more

This is a club for people who already know how to fence and want to show up at any time and practice fencing other people. This is not a club for beginners, especially not for adults. For additional context, I am a 26-year-old woman. Valkyrie Fencing Club's google page says there are beginner fencing classes but that doesn't seem to be the case. The club seems more like an open gym concept rather than actual classes. I'm used to more traditional classes in dance and martial arts where the class starts and ends at a specific time. In the class period usually, there is a warm up/workout, and then drills/practice together or the students split into groups based on experience. The teacher/master usually moves between groups giving guidance and teaching the students. This is just what I am used to and what I enjoy. I enjoyed practicing epee on my first day because the rules are simple but I felt strange starting fencing with such little instruction and no instruction from the master Julie. I had not even met Julie yet and she did not introduce herself to me. I was only shown footwork and how to lunge. I was told by two different students that "Julie doesn't have the patience for teaching new people," and that they (the other students and her child age kids) usually teach new people. I don't say that to be rude, that is genuinely what other students told me so I immediately felt like I wasn't welcome or wanted and it was strange to me that Julie didn't interact with me much. It seemed like other students taught new people, not Julie. I fenced a young boy for a bit in epee but he didn't really take it seriously, he wouldn't move his feet and would just let me hit him, occasionally dancing when I wanted to actually practice. I fenced another child age girl and she seemed really upset to be fencing me, she kept asking another young girl (one of Julie's daughters) to get ready and fence me instead. Still, I had fun and was looking forward to our next class. Julie spoke to me after class and said for my next class she would teach me foil fencing as I had told her I was interested in learning and also competing in foil. When I showed up Julie didn't mention it even though I reminded one of the other girls and she spoke to Julie about it. I was okay practicing sabre (which the entire class was doing). I just felt it was weird it was never mentioned because I spent a lot of time researching and learning foil regulations and rules to prepare. Julie's daughter was not very helpful or instructive, and she didn't seem remotely interested in helping me or fencing me. I felt like a bother to her. She showed me a couple parries but didn't actually practice them with me before walking away and leaving me. I stood around for a bit until another girl came up and asked what I was doing and she then practiced the parries with me and told me the other girl (Julie's daughter) wasn't very good at helping people. When we eventually were practicing fencing with a partner under Julie's instruction the same girl stood there for the most part and didn't practice with me. I had a lot of fun practicing with Julie for a few minutes but then I was put to practice with a really young boy for a while with no further instructions. He didn't take the footwork practice seriously and would hop in place or take baby steps, and neither one of us understood the rules of the game we were playing. He seemed to be making up rules as we practiced and it got really frustrating. When we started to actually fence, he kept stopping and getting upset with me when I would attack saying I didn't have the right of way but then would get upset at me when I wouldn't attack. I told him I was new and didn't understand and he said that my first class was on Wednesday so I have fenced before and should understand. At that point I was just frustrated and decided to leave. I feel like if I continued classes at this club, I would continue to feel frustrated and neglected being taught by students who didn't seem to want to teach me or acted as if I should know what I'm doing already. I understand that I'm not the main priority and that Julie has a lot of other students to instruct, but I'm just not interested in my primary learning being from children who may not have much teaching experience and professionalism. I paid $150 for a month of training and I only attended two classes. Julie never reached out to me to ask why I stopped coming despite having my information. Most sports clubs offer free trial periods usually a week but this club seemed satisfied to take my money and not reach out when I stopped coming. This club may work for you if you already know how to fence, but I cannot recommend it for anyone who is learning or for adults. You will likely be ignored by Julie and taught by her young children, children who acknowledge and tell you that Julie doesn't care about you. read more

My daughter started fencing 3 months ago and was instantly hooked after her beginning course. She really enjoys the staff and the other athletes. The coaches are very knowledgeable, ready to work hard, and a lot of fun. I love that they are so accommodating and will work around my schedule.
