High Desert Gas Mart is no exception. The pumps are thrashed with use and the weathering of the elements. These once-functional card reading pumps are relics of the past abuses from customers. Life exceeds all expectations! Even of a lively imagination in the high desert. It's art. I brought my credit card into the small store that was run by an attractive young woman all tatted out with quick eyes and fast deliberate movements behind the counter. "Fill-up on two.", I said handing her my card. "Credit or debit?", she said. There was a strength in her voice that gave me the message: "I'm clearly in command here. Tread lightly!" "Credit" "You got it!", she said without looking at me or the card but moving on to her next task. I thought, "Wow! Take this girl out of the desert and put her to managing a company and she'd be unstoppable!" I got the gasoline streaming into the tank of the truck and looked around. The rest room (singular here and there is no need to specify the gender because there is only one room) appears to be a lightning rod of contention here. I admired the locking mechanism - a large padlock, a larger chain and a large eye bolt that was ripped out of the door frame. A handwritten note on the door appealing to the goodness of patrons who have abandoned all goodness and fairness. What goes on in there? I didn't open the door to take a peek... I didn't want to interrupt anyone's untoward activities in the interest of quenching my curiosity! Oh, the price of gasoline for regular was the cheapest on the whole trip! Less than $3.50 for regular.

I gave them the benefit of the doubt that it was an accident and tried repeatedly to call and talk to someone. Nobody ever answered. I left a very polite message with my phone number and never heard back. I was only in Big Bear for the night so going in to speak to someone isn't an option. My bank wouldn't allow the dispute claim because I did make a purchase. My fault for not asking for a receipt and disappointed with the lack of response.

The shop is small and packed with anything and everything; fresh fruits, veggies, meats, eggs, cheeses, drinks, laundry and cleaning supplies, liquor, snacks, and fun little treats scattered throughout. The staff are friendly neighborhood folk who know lots of their clientele and just what they want. Prices are high but this is for convenience not the deal. During our stay in Big Bear we got many of our groceries and some sweet treats from the Community Market, and I'm sure we will be back when we return again someday.

As we're all getting a little desperate but trying to act cool, Brad from the Back Dog next door walks out of the store, sees our situation and offers his bathrooms to us. I just don't get this. It seems like common, human decency to let folks use the restroom. You create goodwill and many times folks are so relieved and grateful that they'll buy something on the way out.
