There is a friendly NPS ranger who was available to answer questions. She said that the area gets pretty busy during the summer, but when we visited during the shoulder season there's fewer people. She discussed things to do in the area which was helpful. There's a corner that acts like a small gift shop, although items are a bit limited. That's ok though since you should really be spending time outdoors instead of looking around inside!

This go around it included making a 6 hour drive up to South Dakota 8 hours by building in a stop at Smith Falls. I digress. In fairness, the stops are usually worth it. Smith Falls is apparently the largest waterfall in Nebraska. The falls are pretty neat. There is a raised wooden path that leads you to the base of the fall and you have the ability to step into the very clear and cold pool of water at the base. You can also climb some of rocks and stand right under the falls as well. If we lived in the area, I am sure it is a place we would come with our family regularly. After spending some time at the falls, we followed the narrow stream of water to where the spring feeds into the Niobrara which also offered some calm waters to wade and play around in. The area where the state park is located is surprisingly scenic for Nebraska as well so that offered another perk!

People at front desk are usually helpful. Rooms are adequate although dated. Street noise is…read morenoticeable. Heating/cooling units need updated as they are noisy. The sink is located outside the bathroom, limited vanity space. A towel rack or a hook to hang a damp washcloth or hand towel would be nice. Maybe, a unit on the wall near the sink to place items necessary for personal hygiene. We have been staying here for more than a decade.

I visited on 7/9/20 for one night. This is an old(er), simple, no-frills motel. But it was clean…read moreand the price was decent. The receptionist was super nice and checkin was quick. The room had a little bit of a disinfectant or deodorize smell, but it was ok. The AC worked great. The shower was clean. I thought it was funny that they have a sign with towel prices due to the "popularity" of their towels...which are just basic white hotel towels. I think what they're trying to say is that 'this is how much we are going to charge you if you steal our towels'. I'm usually a Marriot/Hilton/Sheraton/Hyatt guy, but I was totally fine staying at the Raine, and I'm staying there again in a couple weeks. And this time I might even try the on-premises restaurant, because the popular local steak restaurant I went to last time didn't impress.

The room I stayed in smelled like chemicals, the beds were uncomfortable, and I found 2 bedbugs on the carpet floor. And the bathroom wasn't very clean either. If you are looking for a cheap room to stay in for the night, don't stay here. The rooms are dirty and the owner can and will rip you off.

Then they dropped us and one other group at the staring point and launched us on our way! Great 4 hour float (Berry to Brewer) with a stop at Smith Falls for lunch. The folks in the office/store were so friendly and helpful.

We had a graduation in town the next morning and arrived very late at night. I needed to put a container in a refrigerator so they made room for it in their kitchen refrigerator. It really helped me out a lot!
