Banks Lake is a cool spot to hang out and try to spot a gator er' two…read more It's a huge nature/wildlife reservation area, with parts of it (closer to the outpost) accessible by foot. The rest of it, you can only access by renting a canoe or kayak from the outpost (although I can't say how safe I'd feel paddling around a gator infested lake in a kayak...). There are a couple small boardwalks that reach out over the shore and a 1/3 mile long path that stretches a bit further out into a peninsula. Other than that, it's all water and swamp - certified by the red neck girl working the outpost counter to be guaranteed full of alligators (she even named one "Nugget"). And now, some parting words from the outpost lady: "People ask me, 'Are you sure there's gators in this water?' I say: 'You're in Southern Georgia, heck yeah there are gators in that water!' And then they go and they let their dang kids swim in the waterin' hole anyway and I say don't come cryin to me once you ain't got no kids no more!"

Mind you, there is a limit on the size of craft and there are many types of boats , but the most fun is the snipe racing. I've sailed snipes on and off for my entire life and now have a 50 ft Benneteau in St Thomas, but the surreal calmness and serenity of sailing in a small sail boat in a shallow lake, moss laden trees along the shore is hard to Beat. The trail is a quick 0.6-mile loop that is mostly a beautifully maintained, elevated wooden boardwalk, making it highly accessible. You can hear the roar of the falls before you even see them! The water drops over a limestone ledge into a ravine, creating a beautiful contrast with the surrounding cypress and magnolia trees. Tip: The water volume depends heavily on recent rainfall, so it's especially impressive after a good storm!
