John R here. Vietnam Vet that has been receiving care at this facility for 10 years and it has been exceptional service. Let me give you an example: I am 6 weeks into the recovery from total hip replacement and last night I had an extreme "panic" attack. I haven't had one of those for almost 6 years. It scared me. I live alone and called the "Hot Line" at 0430 for help. The lady on the phone was VERY helpful. However, about 0900 I decided to make a trip up to the hospital because I was concerned that this incident could have been related to my Tramadol pain medication. Remember I have no appointment! I arrived at 0945 and checked in with my Green Team and filled out the "walk-in" form. With in 15 minutes I was in the RN's office. He asked all the right questions and I related all my concerns to him. He was in direct messaging contact with my primary care Dr. She indicated that my ramp down dosage of Tramadol was correct and that she felt it was of little risk as the cause of my panic attack. She knew that I would be in for my check-up next week and instructed me to continue my meds at the current level. She also did a referral to the mental health group. The RN walked me over to the primary mental health office where I waited no longer than 30 minutes to see a Clinical Psychologist. She met with me one on one for aprox 45 minutes discussing my situation and reviewing my case history all the way back to my PTSD treatment 7 years ago. She offered several courses of action and together we designed one that I felt comfortable with. I left with a plan of action and contact info should my situation change. By 1230 I was eating lunch across the street. Please, anyone, tell me what medical facility anywhere where you can get this kind of attention? I will guarantee you that the local S&W facility would have no solution for a walk in patient! No appointment no visit! I took my Dad there for years, and it is a good facility with first class care. Just not set up like our Temple VA is! They are first class people working hard to take care of us. Remember we can all have a bad day and we're all not perfect 100% of the time BUT the staff at this facility comes darn close! read more

I am very impressed with the VA lab. You can have your labs done at 7:30 and by the time you are at your Dr apt at 9 they are ready. Staff is friendly but many appointments have been rescheduled. Long wait times and long wait times times to get your appointments read more

If you are a VETERAN avoid having any colonoscopies at this VA hospital. Doctor that does the procedure lacks compassion and will leave you bleeding to almost dying from the procedure. Temple VA management staff does not CARE about the veterans well being. They only care about KEEPING doctors. YOU DO NOT MATTER. read more

Dealing with this VA Hospital is becoming impossible. When you call their community care, you end up at the Community care nationall office, when you call the dental clinic, they just hang up the phone without saying a word. Their whole phone system is screwed up. No one answers the phones or you get a damn recording, sometimes waiting up to o59 minutes before somone actually picks up then hangs up. The Director of this faculity is impossible to get in contct with. If you send mail or use the drop box at the faculity his sec answers the questions. This administration of this faculity just plain sucks. read more

The hospital staff left me alone with out a wheelchair in the hallway to make my way to the pharmacy with a broken left tibia screaming at the top of my lungs, only Veterans came to my aid while the staff turn a blind eye to me read more

This VA is just like any other VA. They don't care about us veterans. They already have their mind made up about you with a list of medications they will prescribe before they even see you. When they do see you they refuse to investigate what's the problems could be. They just want to get you in and out as quick as possible. It's no wonder why so many veterans are so sick and why so many veterans commit suicide. It's because they can't get good health care. Maybe that's the va's plan. People at the ER specialized in providing the worst treatment, that you as a veteran deserved. Starting at the front desk. All they want to know is your last name and your last 4. From there you go straight to the waiting room. Trust me you will wait. Oh no they don't know what is wrong with you, they simply don't care. Their personnel are usually trained by the U S military with special military "I don't give a f*@k attitude" and ate one or two cases of MRE to many. You want real compassionate medical care? Go to Scott &White ER and under new legislation the VA have to pay for it. Why settle for the best care that the lowest bidder can provide when you can get "real medical care elsewhere. I feel the need to start with the fact that most of the nurses and doctors are very helpful and seem to have the care of veterans as a first priority. (Even though of the last 4 years, I have had 6 or so primary care doctors) The HUGE problem is the inept staff that stands between the veterans and the actual care providors. I have shown up to scheduled appointment just to be turned away because 'well, we gave it to someone else and you will have to reschedule'. I have submitted paperwork to be seen by specialist, just to have that request I completely filled out and left to die in a 'processors' inbox. The horror stories go on. If I could work enough to afford insurance, the VA would be the last place I go. But, the VA IS what I have to deal with and I few like most of its employees show up everyday knowing that the veterans have no other choice so can be treated as they please. My primary care doctor of five years retired and my new doctor leaves a lot to be desired. I was recently in a auto accident. My PCP said it was not possible because she didn't know how many broken ribs I had. Then when she found out I am was having a private company do the the follow-up she suddenly realized she could do it. To little to late I want a new PCP. read more

If you're a veteran, this is a great place to come to if you need assistance. Everyday isn't great, but there's tons of people that rolls in and out of this place. So patience is a must. read more

This place is a joke. Right beside Fort Hood and they could care less. They lie about the doctors and places they will send you and change without telling you until last min. TRAVEL PAY is another. Everything ive written on paper several times. ( account numbers, appointments etc., even appointments outside VA with written community care papers) still NO travel pay. Worst Va in the country. I have been a Vet since 93 and this place in Temple Texas is the absolute worst. They will cancel your appointments and reschedule you and not tell you in order to meet their "14-day window required by VA policy." When you fail to show up at the new appointment time (they never tell you about) they say that you "FAILED TO MAKE YOUR APPOINTMENT." Someone is getting FAT BONUS CHECKS on the backs of the Veterans. read more

I have used several of the VA hospitals in Texas. Fortunately, I have had good experiences in the Dallas, Temple, and Waco VAs. In February 2006, I was in the Dallas VA hospital for a simple operation and the day I was getting ready to go home, my lungs collapsed and I was put on a ventilator in ICU. The staff were all very attentive to my needs as well as for my family in from out of town. Once I recovered and was discharged, I had high praise for the staff who were involved in my recovery. In 2009, I was diagnosed with Interstitial Lung Disease after spending 2 weeks as an inpatient. During this time the staff were all kind, professional and compassionate. I have used the VA Healthcare System since 2002 and will say these 3 hospitals and clinics have given me good care. read more

Starting feeling sick on Sunday 1/5/14 and Tuesday 1/7/14 I was feeling like death.I have either the flu or a really bad cold with a major earache.I went to the VA in Temple.The ER told me that I needed to go to my primary Doctor (Maroon Team) as a walk in,she told me that walk ins are excepted all day.Upon checking in to my primary,the nurse took my vitals.After about an hour,the nurse came back and told me that the Doctor told me to take tylenol and if I get worse,to go to the ER....WTF??? I was refused care!!! Because the doctor didn't want to even SEE a walk in?? This is such an insult to a vet and pure quackery for health care!!!! Do yourself a favor and get real healthcare elsewhere! :( ***UPDATE*** About two weeks after I DID'NT see the Doctor,I got cold medicine and a narcotic pain pill prescription in the mail.....WTF???? **** And another*** I am diabetic and prescribed two pills from the VA that DO NOT control my diabetes.I had private ins.from my last job and was seeing a Doctor from a real hospital,who prescribed me another pill that almost instantly brought my blood sugar into check.After changing jobs and losing private ins.I went to the VA to get the new med added to my med mix.I was told that they would not give it to me,because of the cost....WTF is wrong with our country!?! The VA Hospital is trying to change but the process is so so slow. I had cancer of the esophagus and they said they couldn't fix me even though the cancer was one centimeter. They sent me to another hospital. I ended up getting my leg amputated because some one messed with my stents. That should of of happened. The VA basically blows it off. I walked into hospital with two legs they send me to a hospital called Scott and White where some Dr. messed with stent and I had to have them amputate my own leg because of that. They said they would pay for my medical bills, don't believe them. They haven't. read more

I gave a one star review for the nurses. My husband has been there for a month. I went from start preparing end of life to he's going to nursing home for rehab doctors DO NOT keep u informed all the docs that are involved are not on same page and found out there is only 1 urologist in whole va system to deal with the thousands of vets so if u have bladder urinary or kidney problems seek outside help. They do not consider the care giver do not inform the spouse and I feel they read from a medical report rather than discuss the situation. read more

This V.A. has been the worst care I have ever received. The staff is rude and uncaring. They make me fill like I am bothering them. Was sent for community care twice and both times I had to fight to get them to pay the bill. Called Patient Advocate (Gabriel) to see who else can help and two days later and never received a return call. This facility has the same culture as Fort Hood, NO ONE CARES it's just a paycheck. read more

Had a flat tire on the way to my appointment today. Tried to call to cancel/reschedule my appointment but never reached anyone to do so. I spent 20 minutes on "hold" and no one ever answered. They shame you for "no shows", because they say that not showing up without calling causes other vets to not be able to access care, but they don't answer the phones when you call to cancel. Vistied the Hospital on a Sunday ER.. 1 doc on duty i think. I was there 7 hours with the flu. No water offered to to me or nothing.. caught the Doc outside on his phone.. i said to him i just want to go home can we get moving sir. Really upset me that it took 7 hours to a Zpak. read more

This place is so grossly understaffed that the patients are largely ignored. Diagnosis is given without any testing to prove it, and then the steps you have to take in order to remove that false diagnosis off your record is beyond ridiculous. My husband's had to use the ER and even that is stupid. He has serious migraines, and each time he's had to go in, he's tried to get a CT scan of his sinuses (by request of his off-site ENT, which we had to go to because the VA's ENTs were also doing diagnosis without testing or scans), and they STILL won't do it. The policies they have tie doctor's hands, both on and off site. This place is the worst I've ever seen in a hospital, by the gross neglect and lack of care they provide. A clean, spiffy hospital means nothing if the patients are just shuffled through. read more

Very frustrating morning. I ran out of refills for my prescription and tried to contact my provider. I was on hold for 20 minutes when I finally got someone who redirected my call and then the phone rang more than 50 times with no answer. I started over (254 # and I don't have unlimited long distance) and this time was on hold for 45 min. I tried my healthevet, but my provider apparently isn't a premium member, so we can't message. I've never had such difficulties before. Tried patient reps but their phones were busy. Maybe I'll just run out of my prescription. read more

This is by far the worst ER department I've ever used. The receptionist are rude and act like they have better things to do than to talk to you. Even in an empty ER waiting room I was there for over 7 hrs 6 hrs just waiting in the waiting room to be seen after getting X-rays done. Thus is horrible and vets deserve better! Then when you do get seen by the doctor they spend 10 minutes with you and an hour later come back to say they're not sure what's wrong hereafter some pain meds and follow up with pcp! My brothers survives Vietnam and cancer from Agent Orange. He was a fighter. He enters this hospital to have a polyp removed. Which was recommended by this hospital's staff Doctor. The stitches didn't hold and he went into a coma due to the toxins that flowed into his body. He passed away due to their incompetent medical staff. Think he was an isolated case? A vet in the ICU room next to him had been there for a year! The wife had to move him to another hospital. AVOID THIS HOSPITAL! read more

By far one of the worst ER visits ever!!! I will never go back there. They do not care about anxiety or PTSD. I had anxiety attack and no one helped. The nurse and staff were on their cell phones and laughing. They do not care about Veterans. I highly advise looking for other alternatives if you have a mental disability because you will nit be a priority. read more

Went to the pharmacy and was allowed to use a picture of my Id on my phone. Even had my friends pick up meds including narcotics for me never a problem. But then today I go in to pick up meds because I was released from being in the hospital over night. Due to having a cyst burst, and cause extreme pain to the point of causing me tears and not being able to talk and barely breathe. And the guy got smart with me and was rude and told me I couldn't get my meds because it wasn't my actual id. Sorry guy that I was rushed in an ambulance and didn't have my id on me. Some departments are great, others horrible. The primary Dr's , for me, have been abysmal. One questioned my honesty when I described symptoms, another basically told me I was welcome to go elsewhere. My primary told me she wouldn't issue medications from an outside Dr. unless they were just basic generics. Neurology (late stage parkinsons and neuropathy for at least 10) told me there was nothing wrong with me and I probably just drank to much when I was younger. I can barely walk more than a hundred yards and he told me to go join a weight loss group downtown (I'm 6' 1" and 185lbs and hardly overweight). I was already losing weight (not intentionally) so I asked their nutritionist for some supplements. I was told me my bmi was too high and buy carnation instant breakfast if I was concerned, even though she didn't weigh me and had no idea of what my weight was. The lab people have been great (receptionists act like you are bothering them), and the bright spot for me was the Endocrinology department. Very friendly, professional, and caring. I wasn't rushed there, the Dr's were concerned and thorough. All in all, I'd rather be broke going to my own Dr's and buying my own medications than be treated like that. So much for the VA taking care of those of us who are totally disabled (service connected). Wife's name but husband's experience. read more
