This is the weirdest Chinese buffet I've ever been to. It looked so nice when you walked in, with the fountain with the koi fish in it. It was $23 per person with a 2 hour limit. We were walked to our booth and asked what we wanted to drink. We asked for a coke and Diet Coke. We were brought a coke and a sprite. 10 minutes later he took the sprite back and switched it out with the correct drink I asked. I was surprised that they used styrofoam plates...making so much waste. The buffet was...odd. Random Chinese food with American food and taquitos. The food didn't have proper name plates for them so it was kind of a guessing game, and the ones that did weren't even labeled correctly. The food was okay. Not the best Chinese food I've had. They were all cold by the time I went back to my booth. They had steamed bao buns with NOTHING in it. It was just the bun. The only good thing there was the sesame balls. The sushi bar seemed sketch, so I didn't get the sashimi. They had a kid probably 10 years old, working at the sushi bar, playing on his iPad. Is that even legal? It was just so random and all over the place. Random stars on the walls and in the bathroom. I won't come back and I won't recommend this place to anyone. My first time here. The staff was really nice and very friendly and helpful. Zero complaints there. The food on the other hand was terrible. Chicken skewers cold. Chicken wings cold. Baked salmon was neither baked or pink. The sushi honestly tasted like the packaged sushi that you can get at 7-11 The bacon wrapped hotdogs were good but they were cold. The taquitos? Most of the food was Cold or luke warm at best! When I told a staff member, she said I will tell them to turn the heat back on. What?!? Why was the heat turned off? After that several employees kept looking over at me and seemed to be annoyed. I went back through food line and this time I could see steam rising from the buffet line but it wasn't heating the cold food very fast. I went back multiple times taking a small spoonful of dishes I was hoping would be hot but to no avail, at least not the whole time we were there. I ate very little for their $28 price. And most of the food either had no label or was mislabeled. I couldn't figure out what alot of the dishes were or what was in them so I asked an employee and she didn't come over, she just tried to guess from where she was at behind the counter. I served myself something that she said was teriyaki chicken but when I took a bite, it was spicy! Definitely NOT teriyaki AND it wasn't hot either. The restaurant doesn't list prices anywhere, so you have no idea how much you'll be paying until it's too late. They charged over $15 for my youngest siblings who barely even touched their plates. First you walk in and pay $24. Looks amazing at the start, they have a nice fountain (might have fish). They also have cheap paper signs where you pay that say 2 hour Maximum! On our last day of our 3 days west coast tour and when we left the beautiful city of Solvang Ca our tour guide took us to another Buffet place which was the V Star Buffet which was the city of Santa Maria but before that on our 1st day trip we went to the Great China Buffet and now on our last day west coast trip I had the chance to go eat lunch which was my very 1st time being at the V Star Buffet for lunch and what I really liked eating at V Star Buffet was the Sushi Baked Potato Fried Squid Pizza Orange Chicken Chicken on a stick Crab Soup And after eating up all those yummy items and since it was my last day of the West Coast Trip and I wasn't full yet!!! And so I got up and went for some dessert and ate some jello and a small piece of cake!!! You get a vibe from all the employees that they hate being there. You get plastic wear and paper plates. Came on for the first time in a long while. I now have a service dog. When we walked in they asked for her "card" I explained those are illegal and are scams. While I'm trying to express this the other employees and their kids were distracting her from her job. We asked for a booth, since those are easiest for my dog to tuck under. They then instead opted to seat us in a closed section at a regular table. They brought our first round of drinks and proceeded to forget about us. Eventually, I got up to ask about drink refills and they grudgingly refilled them for me after I hunted them down at the drink station. We had about 6 plates piled up on our table and they just couldn't be bothered until they saw me start video taping. Another family chose to sit at the table next to us and an employee removed their silverware and relocated them to another section. I am generally the last person to allege discrimination. But that's what happened. I asked the waitress why she sat us in a closed section and she said because we have a nice table. Bullshit. They put us in a closed section to keep us away from other diners. I have not felt so disrespected since I started this journey with my Diabetic Alert Dig. They had a wide selection and when you want to ball on a budget that would be your go to. some of their food seemed to be out for a while. We've been looking for a buffet with healthy food ever since Hometown Buffet closed several of their locations on the central coast. We go as often as possible to V Star Buffet and thoroughly enjoy every visit. If you arrive before 2pm their lunch is only $15. I love the fact that most of their foods do NOT contain MSG and they will tell you which food contains the MSG if you ask. Although it might not be Chinese in origin, I love their coleslaw. The only improvement I'd like to see is a "heat" indicator so I know which dishes are spicy. They use a large amount of mushrooms, an item that's hard to find in most restaurants. I'm also gluten intolerant and I don't have any problem finding food that I can eat at the V Star Buffet. Their ice cream is the best we've ever tasted -- rich and full bodied. They don't have a designated employee standing at the counter to dish the ice cream for you, but the friendly staff are quick to notice that you're standing near the ice cream and they come immediately to dish it out for you. Their staff are very professional and tend to be on the quiet side, but if you indicate that you'd like more water it seems to appear as if by magic. They have several types of sushi with ginger and hot mustard right next to them. I can't decide which one I like best. Probably the California Roll with lots of ginger, but without the hot mustard. It's true that they use styrofoam plates, but they've switched back to using metal utensils rather than the plastic ones they used during covid. And they provide an ample amount of napkins without us having to ask for more. If you want quality food, at a reasonable price, and aren't specifically looking for traditional Chinese food then we recommend you stop by for lunch. We might just be there too. Yelp claims the V Star Buffet is open seven days a week, but I know for a fact that they're closed on Wednesdays. read more
