We recently had a serious safety concern when staying at the Guest House International (Backpackers…read moreWinnipeg). While a group of high school exchange students were staying at the hostel, the manager/owner, became extremely intoxicated. He was belligerent, lewd, yelling, very angry, inappropriate and being subtlety racist. As a result of the students' feeling increasingly unsafe as his inappropriate behaviour escalated as the evening wore on, we were forced to relocate to new accommodations in the middle of the night. The three foreign workers working there (young female backpackers from Europe) left at the same time as our students as they were also feeling unsafe.

He was racist towards the people of colour I was there with (for example, demanded to know where they were from. When one shared she was born in Canada he said he didn't believe her and demanded to know where she was born). He was drunk on our second night (slurring and mixing up words, walking unsteadily, and smelled of liquor) and became aggressive with the adults and youth in our group (it all started when he came into the common space where some of us were watching tv and playing cards and angrily said "who the hell are you people" and then demanded we turn off the tv and answer his questions because we were "staying in his home"). He became increasingly aggressive when one of the leaders asked him to calm down and not talk to the youth this way. Our entire group of 16 youth and 3 adults locked ourselves in a bedroom while we sorted out what to do. He sat outside the room and would not leave, stating that he wanted to look each of us in the eye. Late in the evening we were able to find a hotel that could accommodate us. When he realized we were leaving he began screaming at the 3 young female staff, demanding they come out of their room and face him and stating it was their fault we were leaving (they had been in bed the entire time before this). They also packed up and left due to his state, even though they were volunteer workers from Europe and had nowhere else to go. Shortly after leaving we found a bed bug on one of our jackets. One youth had some bed bug bites after sleeping there the first night. The hostel was very dirty and uncomfortable, even before the host was inappropriate and aggressive. I hope he gets the support he needs, but I would not recommend anyone stay here.

This hostel has hands down the worst manager I have ever dealt with. WORST GUY EVER. For the love…read moreof god never stay here. The guy that owns this place is BI-POLAR. Okay so anyways this was my experience with guest house international winnipeg: the owner just hangs up on me in the middle off the call when i first called in to inquire about availability. Then, when I called back, he answered and told me what time do you want to come? So I tell him 1:30. So I get there, and nobody answers the doorbell. and there's nobody at the front desk. Then, when he finally arrives back at the hostel the owner (guy by the name of Bill) doesn't even apologize for making me wait over two hours then the time we had initially agreed on. But hey listen, if he had at least apologized i would have let it go because people are human but since he couldn't even do the bare minimum... okay so anyways then when i was checking in he didn't even ask for any ID. but i'm pretty sure every hotel or hostel has to ask for ID or else they can't operate. Anyways, so then i remember when i was watching TV he just comes up THIS close to me and demands to have the remote so other people could watch but nobody staying there even cared and they were off doing other things anyways. And then he told me i should go outside and see the sights and pretty much thought he could monopolize my entire time there. Oh and then I remember his microwave didn't even work. Anyways so then the next day i politely ask him if i could please sit in the living room there and wait for my greyhound because it was not coming for another good few hours and what else was i supposed to do until then. He obliged but then kept tellin me once again go outside ya know, go get out there you know you get out there. and then at one point i was really cold so i asked him very nicely can you please turn the heat up. MIND YOU it was very cold the night before too when i was trying to get some sleep but i gave him the benefit of the doubt and didn't say anything. so i guess that's what i get for being good-spirited. but i should probably shouldn't have seeing as he was just being cheap. But anyways, he immediately gets up and starts shouting at me to leave, and completely disturbs the peace. So i guess that's what I get for making a simple request. But he could have just simply shook his head no instead of humiliating me in front of the other guests. Anyways, i don't think it would take a rocket scientist by now to guess that this guy is a complete nutcase. i don't know why, but this guy just completely picked on me!!!! Never staying here again.
