There were eight of us for dinner. I selected this place on seeing it on Yelp and booked a table, which I didn't need to do as the restaurant was half empty. It however met our expectations by being on the water with open shutters and delightfully informal. Our server was attentive and efficient and deserved a good tip. We commenced with drinks: Patron Margaritas, Modella beer, pina colada's, Moscow Mule and other drinks replenished during the meal. Two people ordered Tacos, pasta chicken, accalpurais, sorullitos, a Caesar salad, mini empanadas, 2 ceviche, Camerones, pasta churrasco, and a churrasco grill. Far too much! We took a bunch of food home. The meal came to $442 without the tip (another $90). Although expensive it was worth it for a special occasion - this time a significant birthday. I rarely write reviews. I do not hand out one star or five star ratings casually. It has to be earned either way. I have lived on this island for a while and have visited this spot multiple times over the years. I have had both good and average experiences in the past. That is why this is disappointing to write. Over the last year and a half, the decline has been obvious. This place has real potential. The location is great. It is on the beach. It could easily be one of the better small venues on the island with just a little attention to detail and some pride in the operation. Instead, it feels like a cash grab. Charging 30 dollars for a double of the cheapest local rum is not premium pricing. It is predatory pricing. Especially when the experience does not remotely justify it. I have paid less at high end four and five star restaurants across the Caribbean. It is frustrating because the foundation is there. But effort matters. Execution matters. Respect for your customers matters. When locals and expats stop supporting a place, that usually says something. When tourists feel taken advantage of, that says even more. Uvva is a hidden gem! Stayed at Hosteria del Mar which is such a cute place to stay at so we of course had to try the restaurant. The fish tacos were so fresh, good portion, and delicious. The Chillo (fried snapper) was a perfect portion aswell. Super soft meat, fell right off the fish and was very tasty. The fish was crispy and cooked just right. The Pina coladas and mojitos are also very good. The view from this restaurant is also amazing, right on the water. Good eats ! read more

I used to live around this neighbordhood (calle santa ana) and use to frequent this place and Hosteria del Mar was synonymous of great and awesomeness now is just a shadow what it used to be. Service is awful servers are not happy and it shows in their faces when you get there they make you feel like you are ruining their day, you will wait for service! really wait! and is not the island time thing is the I do not care attitude. The only reason this place still open is because is one of the few restaurants close to the beach. Food is ok and over priced but.. you pay to eat close to the beach!! Ordered the Mofongo con Churrasco the meat was soft and well cooked mofongo was ok. Drinks depend who prepare them and if the server or bartender care, it was hit and miss. Not all server are aborrecidos... there 2 femmale servers (one them wear glasses gen x) that give their all and carry this place. Ambiance... this place is old run down it screams "please give a make over!!!" Theres better options if you are willing to walk to calle Loiza. Side note we saw some dine and dash situations because the server to do care, they are mostly hanging with friends and involved on their chatty conversations... Trying to get an order was extremely difficult, we had to come to the bar and continuously ask the bartender for drink menu, drinks, and food menu and then food. The drinks we ordered were absolutely horrible. For the price we were better off buying alcohol and free styling it ourselves. The drinks tasted the same, even though we got different drinks. If you read some of the reviews here, you will more or less have read that the service is terrible, the food is average at best but the views are spectacular. Well, forget the views, unless you manage to get one of the two tables outside. Beach erosion has arrived here and all the windows where you may have been able to enjoy the view are covered with plexiglass and you will not be able to see much as they are always wet from the waves splashing on them. I reviewed their Facebook Page and their website to make sure I had the operating times right. On both it said that it opens at 8am. Being from Puerto Rico (yes, I grew up here but live in Virginia now) I know that business hours tend to be "aspirational" at best, so I called the front desk and confirmed that in fact 8am was the opening time. But you already know what is coming... We got here at 8am and the lady at the front desk stated that the restaurant does not open until 9am. I politely commented that their website as well as their Facebook page states Business hours as 8am - 10pm and that I had called the day before and confirmed that tomorrow (today) it would open at 8am. She said "they", and by they I presumed the employees, hadn't arrived yet. We went for a walk and came back at 9am and was surprised when the German family next to us told us it opened at 8:30am... Welcome to paradise! My wife (I brought her here for her birthday) asked the waiter if she could substitute French toast for Pancakes. Our waiter, whom by the look in his eyes had clearly been to the local cannabis dispensary at some point this morning and had enjoyed several pounds of whatever it is they sell there, proceeded to laugh uncontrollably before saying "-No you cannot substitute anything here". (Actually, I made that up just to lighten the mood). Well, not exactly (the laughing was made up) but after several seconds of contemplating what language we were speaking, and whether or not he understood what we said, he stated (for real this time) -"no, no substitutions are allowed" followed by uncomfortable silence. For a fraction of a second my brain wondered if I was at a tourist trap in Paris. My wife, who suffers from "pretty blonde privilege/syndrome" and has no problems getting waiters to customize any order in any way shape or form she wishes (or waitresses that secretly ruin her order on purpose) asked if this being her birthday, could they make an exception and substitute French Toasts with Pancakes. I have witnessed her do this time and again and it annoys the hell out of me because I do not suffer from such "privilege", but here we were and I was about to enjoy watching her disarm this dude/waiter, as she always does. The waiter clearly wondered for a moment whether or not it was Spanish she was speaking or perhaps German or something else. He looked at her beautiful blue eyes for a few seconds, allowing the cannabis to compromise his better judgement and said; -"sorry, no substitutions" while shaking his head with the universal "no". This was followed again by uncomfortable silence... This should have been an easy slam dunk for this place and its service but no, it was not to be. They must go out of their way to make sure all the bad reviews they have had over the years remain accurate and by accurate I mean, terrible service, entirely overpriced, limited menu and now, "underwhelming views". Food was alright but let's just say that we will not be returning to this place any time soon... This may be a good place for Happy Hour but that is it. My husband took me to this restaurant to celebrate our first wedding anniversary when we were staying in San Juan. This restaurant was suggested by our hotel person. When we got this place, we thought that this place looks like a boat house. But when the waiter took us to the table on the beach, it was so nice and romantic view from the table where we sat. The menu was very decent. It has chicken, beef, pork and Pasta. Everybody can find something to eat from the menu. We went there on Feb.12th. They were doing Valentine's special menu. It was three course menu; Appetizer, Main course and dessert. I had Rib eye steak. I love it. My husband had salmon. It was very nicely baked. The dessert was fantastic. Forgot to mention! I loved the drinks. I had watermelon sangria. It was so fruity. Great service and Great food. Also this place is a little bit from away from the big commercial hotel areas. So this place was a dud. The only thing that I can say that was amazing was the view. Our order came out an hour and 20 minutes after we ordered. As it was taking so long we asked to see the rooms and apartment the smelled old and need renovation. I informed the manager that my food was cold to the touch she took it put it in the microwave and brought it back out the middle of my rice was still cold. They ran out of fish bites so they brought us cheese bites. Our checks of 11 people was all put on one bill which was not what we ask for as we sat at 5 different tables and then they couldn't fix it so our total of $480 was split to two bills It took them another 35 minutes to explain that. Friends took us here for the first time last week. We sat right next to the water with only a short wall between us and the ocean. That night was a full moon and we were able to watch the full moon rise through the clouds with sprays of water coming up in the air it was beautiful. Justice other people recommended the tuna tartare was phenomenal. I had never eaten any tartar before. For my main meal I had the clam and shrimp pasta which was the best I've ever tasted. It was made better because they make their own pasta so you could taste the freshness of the pasta and the freshness of the fish. I was told that over the years and since the last hurricane the beach had eroded so now the waves would actually hit the wall and you see these magnificent sprays going up in the air. They are totally understaffed, while other tables glasses were being removed; they were actually being placed at the bar. (Lazy) and there was no uniform table ware, all of the glasses were different - probably because they weren't washing them as they were being removed! The food was fresh, not greasy, and very tasty. They gave adequate portions and it was well presented. While the view was amazing and the music was lovely, hopefully they can speed up their service and hire a couple of people. Really disappointed with our time here. After waiting 2.5 hours for our cold food, we were left with a rude manager who was barely apologetic and only cared about our money. There was only one server who was also the bartender for 50+ people. We felt extremely sorry for him because we never saw him sit down and he was running around nonstop. He was very nice and kept apologizing but then it would take another 45 minutes to even get water or our drinks. When the food came out, it was extremely cold. The food itself had an abundance of flavor but was clearly left out for a while and forgotten about. I understand island time but it was very close to three hours by the time we paid and left. After leaving, we read multiple reviews about being charged for things they never ordered/having the cops called on them for refusing to pay. This is absolutely ridiculous. Just spent 196$ including 20% for slow, cold, small, food and 4$/bottle of Fiji water. Which they did not tell us Left hungry and would never go back. Four adults and two kids. Ordered all at once: water for the table, couple drinks, humus plate, salad, steak tacos, chicken pasta with white sauce, burger, and monfogo. Drinks came, water ended up being 5 bottles of Fiji at 4$/bottle which we were not informed of at all! Humus and salad came in 20 minutes, which was good. Burger and taco came 50 minutes after we ordered and were both cold, finally 60 minutes after we ordered the pasta and monfogo came. Pasta was only thing hot. This is our second stay at the hotel . My first stay there was free coffee in the am. It is right on the beach so it was nice to enjoy the morning with a cup of coffee . This time you had to buy coffee but they make a nice latte And the coffee was good. We decided to be lazy and lay on the beach all day and enjoy piña coladas and appetizers. I had a double espresso each time but it tasted watered down and the machine wasn't properly cleaned given my coffee had too much coffee grounds on it. My companion had omelettes twice and they were cooked perfectly. The pork stuffed tostones were a great balance of salty and sweet. The beed battered grouper sandwich was honestly perfection. I don't recommend!!! My bad experience started with mediocre room . No windows, the only window in the room had a plastic cover do to construction. The bathroom was really a (jock ) unless you were six foot tall you can look at yourself in the mirror. My first dinner I asked for halibut which it was $ 30.00 my boyfriend ask for risotto al mar $30.00. Let me begin by tell you my fish smell like it had been dead for wks. OMG my stomach is still queasy. My boyfriend risotto al mar had clams that were not even open. I'm really sad this place can really be a gem. Thank God for the view. Amazing place. Its on the beach so how can you go wrong. Has three types of seating. On the actual sand, on a raised platform next to the sand and a ultra loungy chill area. The food is amazing. I stayed at Hosteria del mar 4 years ago with my girlfriends and had a wonderful week-long vaca. My boyfriend and I just visited the island again and we walked from our condo down to what I remember to be a beautiful, hidden gem. It was sad to see the beach almost all washed away from the flooding they had this past winter. However, I cannot speak highly enough about the food. It was just as I remembered it, and better!! It was our last night, so we went all out. First off-- Passion fruit mojiots- Out of this world! We had an abundance of them. Patio seating on the ocean cannot be beat. It's beautiful at night. The waitstaff was so friendly and attentive. Food. We didn't do main meals, but had the Fritter sampler, Ceviche, and Chorizo Duet. Enough food to OVER stuff us, plus took some home! The fritters were so rich and delicious. The Ceviche was the freshest we had our whole trip... and all the ones we had we thought were 'the best." The Chorizo Duet was explained to us by the waiter as, "one hell of a flavor explosion in your mouth" and he was absolutely correct. We finished our meal with deep fried coconut encrusted cheesecake. Disclaimer, I eat dessert with every meal, hated coconut before visiting the island and never usually get the "deep-fried" food choice and OMG. Best dessert we had on the island, maybe even the best anywhere! I cannot even explain it... just GET IT! Great place on the water, not many options like this. Quiet, nice ambiance and very quaint. What a location! This place is right on the water at Ocean Park and it was one of my mom's regular spots. Its a small restaurant and hotel, not a resort or anything like it, but it has a cozy warm feeling that would entice anyone to choose to stay here. Of course, since its in a neighborhood and without any of the resort services, you'd need a car and to know your way around. If not, then you can come to the restaurant and stay somewhere else. It has tables inside and on the sand so you can come from home for a meal, or step in from the beach in your bathing suit and have a drink and appetizers, which used to be our case. It has pretty good food. Goat cheese croquettes are incredible and the red sangria is delicious. read more
