I ended up at the Battery and the USS Hobson memorial on a serendipitous walk from the Charleston Waterfront Park.
I was walking around the residential areas of downtown Charleston, South Carolina playing the mobile game, Pokémon Go. I ended up here randomly and noticed a nice park here and ventured to find a spot to sit down to rest. I ended up sitting at the bench directly in front of the USS Hobson memorial. While resting and admiring the beautiful views, I read the inscription on the memorial itself and it gave me pause. It was dedicated to the men who lost their lives on the USS Hobson on a training maneuver. The other part of the memorial is where the 30 something states that these men who called home. All tributes and memorials dedicated to the men and women in uniform who have served help inspire and retain a strong and poignant reminder that freedom isn't free. We are reminded here in Charleston, SC and everywhere where these monuments are built in tribute of these heroes. I arrived here around 5pm spent about 45 minutes or so resting and reflecting at the USS Hobson memorial. It was tragic at how the ship sank but we remember these men in uniform who paid the ultimate sacrifice for the continued freedom we all have in the current day.
The overall experience here at the USS Hobson memorial was incredible and inspiring. I know that we are inspired by their dedication, resilience, and commitment to public service. The pursuit of freedom for all Americans is what drives our society. I read the description on the memorial itself, which featured the names of the soldiers whom died in the tragedy. I also read all the state names that was at the foot of the memorial. I wasn't sure if Hawaii was there, as I believe it was a territory of the United States, at the time of the incident. The USS Hobson memorial overlooks the bay, as a reminder to everyone who comes to the Battery. We strive to be better people through challenges and opportunities. This is what I gained from visiting this memorial here in Charleston. We often pass by these memorials in our daily lives, but we shouldn't. It helps us as a community and society to remember these events and the persons involved, so we can build a better future. And as such, if you happen to be in the Charleston SC area and want to come by to see the USS Hobson memorial, it's there for public viewing.
The USS Hobson memorial is located on the Cooper River front at White Point Garden in downtown Charleston, South Carolina. It's a memorial to fallen soldiers in a public space, so it's free access. It shares the space with other war monuments. For the most part though, it was a somber but uplifting experience for me. A time to reflect and a time to remember what you are grateful for in this lifetime. As far as parking goes, your best bet would be to take street parking along the River front and other available street parking nearby. If you love riding the CARTA or DASH, consider the right routes for you to get you to this space. Of course, there are Uber and Lyft to meet your needs as well. If you're in the area, consider making a stop here to enjoy the River Front views and reflect on the lives lost from the USS Hobson.
5.0 stars for the overall experience.
