Camp Murphy Site

Camp Murphy Site

I enjoy learning about the WWII history of South Florida so it was very interesting to find this historical sign across from the parking lot at the base of Hobe Mountain Tower. The bombing of Pearl Harbor by the Japanese, Dec. 7, 1941 launched the United States into WWII. The Army Signal Corps founded in 1860, had been experimenting since the 1930's with a new technology called radar. The Signal Corps School in Fort Monmouth, N.J. was the main radar training school in the 20's and 30's but with the start of the war the government wanted to set up radar training in a place with better year round climate like South Florida. That was how Camp Murphy became the base of operations for Southern Signal Corps School during World War II. The vast land and vegetation were also perfect for camouflaging their operations. Camp Murphy was named in honor of Col. William Herbert Murphy, a pioneer in the development of radio beams and equipment for military aircraft. He was shot down by the Japanese Feb. 3, 1942, over the Indonesian Islands in the Pacific Ocean where he was killed in action. Camp Murphy covered 11,364 acres and housed 854 officers and 5,752 enlisted men. The Signal Corps School in Martin County was the first of its kind to be built in the United States. The first building built at the new camp was the Area Engineer Office. The camp was a complete city with close to 1,000 buildings that included a bank, post office, telegraph, movie theatre, bowling alley, bank, two churches, recreation halls, mess halls, library, lecture halls, gas station, lookout tower and a telephone system. In 1944. Camp Murphy was decommissioned and used for migrant housing during the fall and winter of 1945. In 1948 buildings were torn down although you can still see some remains in the park today. On June 9, 1947, the property was transferred from the US government to the State of Florida for a State Park and in 1950 Jonathan Dickinson State Park opened to the public. Marker F-624 was installed by the Friends of Jonathan Dickinson State Park and The Florida Department of State in 2008. Behind the marker is a display with more information about the camp and pictures. At the time this camp was in operation very little would have known about it outside of the military personnel stationed here. Not even the surrounding community would have known what was going on. It's secrecy was key to its success. It is only now that we can recognize this important piece of military history in our midst and appreciate all of the soldiers who worked here to win the war.
