This massive iconic Iwo Jima Monument opened in 1954 in Arlington Ridge Park. It represents the nation's gratitude to the Marines & those who have fought beside them. It commemorates the Marines who have died in service since 1775, and is based on the iconic photo of the second flag raising on Iwo Jima. It depicts the 6 Marines raising the 2nd American flag atop Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima during World War II, and is based on a photograph by Joe Rosenthal.

A must see place in Arlington National Cemetery. Important moment in WWII when 6 marines raised the American flag on the island of Iwo Jima. Walking from the military women memorial to the site is an easy walk through the cemetery field, very peaceful and serenity.

Located near the gates to Arlington National Cemetery, this memorial is dedicated to all U.S Marines that have given their lives for or in defense of the country since 1775. The structure is massive up close. With inscriptions on the front and rear, in gold lettering on a solid black granite base, the infamous 6 soldiers hoisting the American Flag during the Battle of Iwo Jima is the focal point. There is a clear view of the Washington Monument in the background. What a magnificent dedication to the men and women of the U.S Marines. Thank You All. Semper Fidelis

Like the Grand Canyon, the Golden Gate, bridge, a Key West sunset, or sunrise at Mount Rushmore, no photograph or video can do justice to actually being there... And that certainly applies to the US Marine Corps memorial. During our recent November 2022 visit to Washington DC, my wife and I put in more than 30,000 steps a day, visiting all of the sites and historical places around the national mall, and across the bridge to Arlington and the Pentagon. One of our stops was here, and my first impression: it's much larger than you thought, the last time you saw it in a movie. As we approached the memorial, a docent greeted us, and shared with us a great deal of history about the statue, the event that inspired its construction, and even the mysterious and changing identities of the individuals memorialized here. It was actually very interesting to hear. He gave us a map, and some good directions to Arlington national cemetery, about a mile walk to the south. Equally moving was that as we walked away, we noted a group of Marines and some family members preparing to remember their grandfather. We had a brief conversation with a couple of the family, and it was moving and inspiring to see them holding this ceremony in this sacred place. I'm glad we took the walk to get here, it was definitely worth the steps.

Most people will recognize this iconic statue from pictures they may have seen online or somewhere in the media. However, this is mainly a tribute to all marines that have served and given their lives to the US since 1775. The actual stance is from the victory of Iwo Jima, where the marines were able to raise a flag on Mount Suribachi. I was surprised at how enormous the statue was when I was looking from the bottom. Nevertheless, it's a must see for everyone coming to visit DC. It's farther from the more famous memorials. If you're driving, they do have some parking spots in front.

If you are familiar with the famous photo of the Marines raising the flag on Iwo Jima, then it will become immediately clear why this memorial is also referred to as the "Iwo Jima Memorial." It is an excellent 3D rendition of the photo, a sculpture of that moving moment in time. It towers above you and really makes you feel humble and thankful. There are benches to sit and reflect nearby. It is located near the Netherlands Carillon and Arlington National Cemetery and shares a similar great view of DC as the carillon does.

When I found out I'd be going to DC to honor Ben's grandfather at Arlington for his service in the Army I immediately started my research on the numerous military locations to visit in the DC area. My father and uncle are Marines, and my grandfather was also in the Army so I wanted to be able to bring back pictures for my Dad. I knew he had never been there. This park (Arlington Ridge Park) is not in DC and their website read that the park was closed on the Saturday I planned to visit but I took the chance that the statue I really wanted pictures of would be outside of a gated area so I went anyway and I am very glad I did! "Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima" is one of the most recognized images of World War II and definitely a symbol for the Marines. You can find this located within an area that you can drive up and park your car and that is used by many locals with dogs for walking. While walking up to the memorial it is amazing to take in the sheer size of the statue.

Uncommon valor was a common virtue. This memorial is a beautiful reminder of those who sacrificed for the country they loved. It is away from all of the other museums, memorials and monuments, but definitely worth the trip over. There is convenient, free parking. Make it a priority to see this amazing Memorial.

So this is another tough review to write because of close family members who were in battle. My father fought in the same pacific campaign during WWII, only he was in the Battle of Okinawa which was about a month apart from the Battle of Iwo Jima. Both islands were strategically crucial to victory. Many Army, Marine, and civilian lives were lost. You don't really hear much about these gruesome battles because "The Greatest Generation" never talked about it. My brother (who had returned from the Vietnam War) later told me some stories that dad passed on to him. They shared a bond after going through similar experiences. My brother being a SARC assigned to a Marine Recon unit totally understood what dad had gone through. It saddens me thinking about it now, but I guess that's why I find these war monuments so special. It tells a story of a hard fought battle and the price of freedom. A story that my dad never wanted to share with anyone, and had nightmares of it all until the day he died. Anyway, the Iwo Jima monument is a sight to see. This sculpture was inspired by that famous photo of the 6 marines who raised the second flag on top of Mount Suribachi in 1945. The first flag was later replaced with a larger one from a tank landing ship. It's the perfect memorial to the Marine Corps. It's much more powerful when you see it in person. This memorial is massive. The figures are about 32 feet tall, and the flagpole is about 60 feet tall. It's an awesome view! As others have mentioned, this is outside of the district. You can take a taxi, make it part of a private/group tour, or drive yourself up to see it. You can even walk to it from the Rosslyn or Arlington National Cemetery metro station if you're in good enough shape. I think it's about a 15 minute walk. Fortunately, there are many benches in the park for those who need a rest after walking. Don't miss it!

The US Marine Corps Memorial is one of the most recognized memorials in the Washington, D.C. area. It's a memorial in Rossly, Virginia dedicated to the marines who lost their lives for their country. There's a small free parking lot nearby and a walkway speaking to the history of the memorial. It also has beautiful views of the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

This is the sort of site that is iconic without being cliched. The photograph it's based on was already famous, and the memorial itself is quite magnificent (the figures are much larger than life size, which I know surprises many visitors). It's not in DC, but it is next to the memorial cemetery, and it has a small ring of parking and is also walkable from Rosslyn. It's also a site you could easily overlook as the surrounding trees mean that it's not visible very far away. I would suggest not overlooking it.

9/4/21  The US Marine Corps Memorial was unveiled on November 10th, 1954.  67 years ago...just ten years before I was born.   I was planning on visiting this memorial last week, but I did not have the time.  I also wouldn't have been able to get past the gates from the Arlington Cemetery side without proper documentation...which I did not have. It doesn't take look to walk around the statue  of the marines, but can take longer if you look at all of the detail Felix De Weldon aka The Sculptor. Let's not for get about The Architect who help design the piece either.  His name is  Horace W. Peaslee. The day has been cool at times so I wore a windbreaker, but then the sun cam out and things warmed up. I say some women wearing a one peice body suit.     I also saw people dress in some  kind of military attire,  but the bottoms of the outfits were in short tights for both man and woman. After  looking at the Marine Corps Memorial,  I checked out the Bell Tower, but it is under construction.    I don't remember the the last time I heard the sound of music from this contraption,  but it us nice to hear when it is working. Well, it is time to move to other places, but The US Marine Corps Memorial fun to visit. Oh, on my way back to the car, I stopped by one of the Portable Bathrooms  when I saw someone's writing say "All Niggas On The Metro R Gay." Yeah, okay.  Let my people catch you and we will Express  our happiness to you.  Well also teacher you a thing or two as well before we part ways with you. I smile as I think of this African American colloquialism. "Don't start nothing, won't be nothing."

Amenities - None of the outlets for the desks work, and the molding on them prevents most stuff being plugged in anyway. I had to crawl under the table and remove the desk plus and use the floor plugs directly. Setting - Terrible, the staff do nothing to enforce a good library setting conducive to reading and studying. It's always incredibly loud, lots of screaming kids, and just obnoxious people talking full volume, laughing out loud, or big meeting groups humming around. They let homeless people sleep and malinger around all over the place and it STINKS. Cleanliness - Disgusting, the floors and surfaces are always very dirty and the bathrooms are third world. Shit smeared everywhere, USED TP all over the place, broken soap dispensers off the walls never replaced, never any paper towels, etc. I also witnessed a homeless guy doing drugs off the sink. Comfort - Need more comfy seating. Only a few soft seats and none with feet support or reclining. Most of the chairs are very hard and the desks/tables are set too low. Staff - Seems overall to be friendly but very aloof.

In planning the trip, which began about a year prior, we were recommended through a friend to use Asimina Tours; we were put in contact with Dimitri. Right away, Dimitri worked very closely with us to find out what we were interested in seeing, how long we were looking to stay in Italy, and what our budget was. From there, Dimitri, along with his partner Christina, put together an amazing package that allowed us to see all the sights. We went to Venice, Como, Milan, Florence, Rome, and Sorrento. Along the way, we had many day trips, the majority of which were fantastic. From Pisa, Siena, Lucca, Cinque Terre (a favorite), the Vatican, Pompeii, the Amalfi Coast, and Capri, it was a once in a lifetime experience and we had the most amazing time. Other highlights of the trip were the wine tasting in Tuscany and the private cooking class in Sorrento. They were also very accommodating with some last minute trip ideas. About 2 months prior to leaving, I had learned that one of my favorite bands, Queens of the Stone Age, were going to be performing in Italy while we were there. We contacted Dimitri and he was able to rearrange our hotel and travel accommodations, including a last minute domestic flight, without any issues. Dimitri and Christina made the entire process run smoothly. All of our travel tickets and hotel reservations were all available through the app. Our hotels were centrally located and were within walking distance from the major attractions. We really appreciated the private transportation arrangements to take us from the hotels to the train stations/airports, as well as the private tours. If you are planning on going to the Mediterranean area of Europe, I would highly recommend using Asimina Tours, they were awesome.

The quality and detail involved in the instruction here is superb - you feel like you're being given all of the information you need, from the basics to more complex properties of the helicopters. There was no point where I felt like the information was overwhelming or over-simplified: it seemed like the right mix of education and beginner's instruction. As for the flight, it's a blast! While I was far from talented at piloting the helicopter, I was given quite a lot of control over time, and I felt increasingly comfortable as time went on. I felt safe and monitored the entire time - even when a lot of wind blew the helicopter around, the instructor was available to make things right quickly and effortlessly. Needless to say, if you have the time and the money, give this place a shot!
