This is the Way Route #1 ends or perhaps it's the way it begins right here at the zero marker. Across the street is zero marker cafe and the end of the road gear. They sell signs & icy cold water that is perfect!

Things you can do at a mile marker: 1. Look at it. 2. Touch it. 3. Take a photo of it. Pretty cool, but don't feel bad if you miss it. Looking at the image on Google street view is a pretty comparable experience.

Gotta do it when in Key west! We had lunch around the corner at the Big Cheese and walked over. Easy to find and a fun photo to keep as a memory of our week.

Where is the green US 1 Mile Marker 0? Before heading out to the ferry station for a day trip to Dry Tortugas National Park I wanted to see the road sign marking the beginning/end of US Highway 1. It was still dark at around 6:15a... sunrise wasn't until 6:56a. We came looking for the mile zero marker sign and it was gone... on both sides, beginning and end! The rest of the sign on the South END side was looking a little rough, filled with stickers of all sorts almost covering the US "1." From a distance it looked like it was riddled with bullet holes. Not sure when we'll ever be back in Key West again but I hope they replace the zero in the near future. The official end of U.S. 1 is a frequently photographed landmark in Key West and the US1 mile marker zero sign is one of the most popular places to have a pic taken... probably as equal as the southernmost point buoy on Whitehead and South Streets. I don't really understand what and why this is an attraction. I guess because Highway 1 starts here. My wife , told me she saw this last time we came here and saw ppl's post and pictures as well. After we took pictures and checked in at the other touristy attraction call southernmost point in US, we mapped and came here. Although the map says we arrived, the place did not look the same. I realize the "0" miles market are gone both sides of the streets. It's tragic that this happens. Ppl vandalizing or taking signs as souvenir. I realize: that's why we couldn't tell where we are. Ppl come up on something that has no significance and make it like there is. I guess it matters when the highway starts or end on a busy intersection here in key west

    Looking a little rough

Fun obligatory photo spot as a tourist. The sign can use a little TLC as it's currently covered in stickers. There is a gift shop right next to it so you can pick up a memento to let everyone know that mile marker 0 is where you'd rather be!

Got to take my friend here over the weekend. It's a fun photo stop and completely free. Definitely something you will see everywhere in he souvenir shops. There is a great souvenir shop right at the marker.

Cute area took my picture and went shopping in the 2 cute stores there. I loved how the roosters were walking into the businesses.

US 1 is a highway in North America which starts from Key West and ends in northern Maine at the border of Canada. It's the longest north to south road in America. There's an end and a beginning sign. Before we were leaving Key West, we wanted to see what the hype was about. Yes it's cool that it's the beginning of a long long route but it was just a street sign; nothing brilliant or magical about it. The cool thing was there was no line to take picture of it! I definitely recommend checking it out, it's on one of those tourist checklist that you just have to check off and experience the monotonous hype. I honestly didn't stop to take a picture with it, it was a slow drive by to have a good glimpse of it. The sign was clean and new looking probably because people either steals it or vandalizes it.

Mile 0, this is where it begins

US 1 begins at 490 Whitehead St. in Key West, also ends here if you start from Maine. Sign said "begin" but if you cross the street, another sign said "end". I was riding a scooter on Whitehead St and saw the sign "end". I pulled over for a quick photo, that's when I realized the other side of street said "begin". I thought when something ends, it's always the beginning of something new. There were some people but was never a long line. Good place to take a few pictures with this iconic sign. I didn't know about US1 so I looked it up. U.S. Route 1 (US 1) is a major north-south U.S. Highway that serves the East Coast of the United States. It runs 2,369 miles from Fort Kent, Maine, at the Canada-US border, south to Key West, Florida, making it the longest north-south road in the United States.

If you go to Key West and you want to do some tourist things this is a very good one to see. Mile Marker 0 is where Hwy. 1 starts or ends depending on whether you are going North or South. In either case it's fun to see.

Mike Marker 0 is where the US Highway begins...or ends... or...both. One of the must 'Stop and get a pic' places in Key West. So, I got to check that off of my unofficial things to make sure you do when you're down here. But I gotta say, it was pretty cool!!!

I'm from the south and getting a picture with mile marker 0 is a must. It's right on the corner and has many shops around it to buy some souvenirs

It's a nice remembrance of the history of the town and the struggles that some of their residents had to endure decades ago. The statue, erected in March 2015, celebrates the life of Bishop Albert Kee, a preacher, businessman, and Key West's official ambassador of goodwill. Each day, Bishop Kee could be seen at the Southernmost Point, greeting the Conch Train with a cheerful wave and toot on a conch shell. He educated visitors about the origins of conch and various uses for conch meat and also explained how Key West's natives came to be called Conchs. Bishop Kee, and his father before him, left a 50-year legacy of welcoming all who visited the Southernmost Point and popularized conch blowing. More important, they were emissaries of the multi-cultural, multi-ethnic community that had made Key West unique since its inception. Bishop Kee witnessed the Southernmost Point evolve into a spot that thousands of tourists flock to for their photos. And he was there when the old wooden southernmost billboard was replaced with the oversized buoy proclaiming that it is the southernmost point in the continental United States. The buoy design originated from a large floating buoy that marked the entrance to the Black Beach. A number of years prior to this, President Harry Truman took a big step in support of equal rights when he ordered that the military become desegregated. His orders were interpreted to mean that desegregation applied only to military personnel. President Dwight D. Eisenhower took this a step further and desegregated the entire military. The historic Black Beach could not be returned to the community since a large portion of it was now a military base with Navy housing built along the adjacent shores. However, as a gesture to the community, the city built a large community pool and community center at the edge of Bahama Village. The pool was situated to look over the beaches that were once Black Beach and toward the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. It had ground level space for community gatherings and was open to all. The pool is currently called the Martin Luther King Community Center and is located at 300 Catherine Street in Bahama Village.

Worse it remains unfinished as HIV victims are still dying. The memorial has been enlarged twice and names are still been added. The Key West AIDS Memorial was built with private funds and donated to the City of Key West in 1997. At that time not only was Key West battling an epidemic few people understood, but it was also becoming a refuge for hundreds of people who were diagnosed elsewhere but felt they could not remain at home in what many considered to be hostile environments. So they moved to Key West, which drove the "real" numbers much higher and put an overwhelming strain on the medical resources of the tiny island community. I might add that the Key West AIDS Memorial was the first municipal memorial to AIDS victims in the world.
