I visited Urban Adamah for a weekend retreat and had a very positive experience! Considering I was staying on a farm, I was not expecting the accommodations to be so nice, that's for sure. The rooms had bunk beds, but they were study and relatively comfortable, with outlets by every bed. The bathrooms were very modern and clean, as well. I really enjoyed exploring the property and playing with the goats! It felt very safe staying here, as they locked the front gate most of the time, especially overnight. The staff here were also great and dedicated to the success of the farm. Shoutout to Jesse for cooking up some delicious food all weekend! I will definitely leave Urban Adamah feeling refreshed and rejuvenated! Highly recommend coming to the farm to learn more. read more

ANTIVAXXERS WORK HERE. RUDE, ableist, and dismissive of medically vulnerable Jews, first of all. When you call to inquire about the safety of the events that they continue to hold despite the pandemic, no one ever gets back to you. You can email numerous times as I have, you can call numerous times, and they will not get back to you if you ask pointed questions about masking and vaccination status of employees and guests. They literally refuse to disclose whether or not their staff is vaccinated so if you are an immuno compromised Jew, they will not protect you. They don't require vaccinations and they don't require masks at some of their events. On top of that, they rarely get back to you when you ask, and so they are totally ignoring the principle of pikuach nefesh. If you are a loved one of someone who is immuno compromised or medically vulnerable or disabled, do not ever go here. They will not protect us and they will not protect you. And they are rude on top of it. That means if you know someone with cancer, kidney disease, any of the other thousands upon thousands of conditions that make people immuno compromised. Those three months reconnected me to my Jewish identity and gave me a way to establish myself as a young adult in the East Bay. I was at urban Adamah for an event and witnessed the most disgusting unhygienic food prep I've seen in a long time. I paid for pizza from the cob oven and watched one of the cooking staff touch money, her hair, her face, and the food, over and over for almost thirty minutes while I was waiting for my pizza. Not recommending buying food there. Second I was horrified about the way they handled slaughtering their chickens. Awesome experience to have a farm in the middle of the city is everything. Definitely a place for all ages and all ages will definitely learn something new. Had the opportunity to enjoy some of the fruit they've grown and it was so delightful. Once a month they have family day on a Sunday admission is free and they even have summer sessions for children of all ages during different days and times. I would absolutely recommend you to check this place out if you're someone who appreciates farm life. I love urban Adamah. I love that they grow food to donate to the needy. I love that 3 or 4 cohorts of interns cycle through every year learning about farming, cooperative living and Jewish values and traditions, while contributing their energy to run and grow programming. I love attending Friday night services and the occasional bonfire there. Sukkot was amazing last year. I really look forward to this year's celebration. The minute anyone walks onto Urban Adamah grounds, one is transported away from the SF Bay Area hustle and bustle. My preschooler experienced spiritual sereneness with nature and farm life without having to drive 2+ hours. On the first day of camp, I walked by a poem of unconditional love for each other and our beautiful environment: "Even after all this time The sun never says to the earth, 'You owe Me.' Look what happens With a love like that, It lights the whole sky." How can I not be inspired? It has been over a month since my preschooler attended Sprouts Farm Helpers two-week camp, and he still talks about going back to Urban Adamah on a weekly basis. His repeated request warrants a review right? My son is a mix-race kid, and I have been figuring out how to balance exposure and learning about his different cultural heritage and backgrounds. Urban Adamah is a conducive, warm, and welcoming place for a young mind. The camp environment is so different from my son's day-to-day that concepts are interesting and memorable for him. At home his Jewish father can better discuss with his son about Jewish high holidays, ideas, and stories, and we all connect better over the non-secular PJ Library books. The environment was also perfect for my son's non-Jewish friend to attend, and both had a great time together and with other campers. On the first day, a camp counselor dressed up as a scare crow. The new campers gave the scare crow a tour of Urban Adamah, and so it would not be fearful of a new environment. What a neat ice breaker! They harvested honey and churned fresh butter. All the music is with live instrumentals and singing, which is much appreciated over the auto-tuned music that we hear all the time. Soothing live instrumentals is present during each week's Friday closing ceremony and mini shabbat, which parents and caregivers are invited to attend. The best part is the daily "Kindness Report." My son will randomly chant "kindness is cool" with gratitude at home. Okay, there was also another best - a live baby goat birth on the farm. With this untimed surprise, the campers met the new baby goat. What an incredible opportunity to learn about a special gift of life. The two week session was just right as my introverted son started to open up around a week and a half. There were two friendly and loving camp counselors and an intern for each group. They were super accommodating with my son's food allergies too. The fresh and high quality snacks were the best out of all the camps my son attended. I can go on and on, but really sign-up your kiddos for summer camp! It is an urban experience unlike any other camp. read more

I volunteered here after moving to the Bay Area as a place to potentially find a sense of community. However, I was made to feel unwelcome after a few weeks when I experienced an implied prejudice based on my gender and sexuality. I don't think the farm had bad intentions, but ultimately this was a really disrespectful experience. I would caution others to tread carefully before getting involved. read more

Although I applaud Urban Adamah's innovative programming and policy of giving away 90% of their produce, I had a very bad experience immediately following the raw, vegan chocolate-making class. In the class, the teacher had said that raw chocolate in its purest form will alter you. Soon after arriving home, my room started spinning, I couldn't stop shivering, despite wearing four layers, including a bulky wool sweater, and I was panting. Initially, I thought it was severe food poisoning, especially since I recalled people dipping chocolate into spices, eating the chocolate, dipping again Without Washing Their Hands!!! But when I looked up side effects to eating raw chocolate in its purest form, I came across an article that said the chocolate contains theobromine, which can cause an abnormal heart rhythm. I hadn't eaten much chocolate, but was affected and thought that the teacher should have clarified specifically how the chocolate can alter because really to cause an abnormal heart rhythm is endangering people's lives. read more

I participated in the Fall 2014 Fellowship, and gained an incredible amount of practical knowledge about sustainable agriculture, social justice, and Jewish tradition. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. They frequently run family-friendly educational programs, and on Wednesdays they give away all their produce to the needy. I brought my Religious School students to Urban Adamah twice for field trips; they had an amazing, educational, and varied experience steeped in Jewish values from harvesting and grinding flour to playing with goats and making bicycle blender smoothies. Talking about food justice while eating their homemade pita in a 'Bedouin' tent was a great culmination. The docents were excellent and engaging.
