Dr. Liss and everyone at Upper East Smiles provide such a warm, reassuring environment. I was so nervous about my gum graft surgery (which required tissue from both sides of my palate to thicken tissue under 5 teeth). I compared so many options in NYC, and even other states and outside the US. Two weeks after my gum graft, I feel confident that I made the best choice. I knew beforehand that the surgery wouldn't be covered by insurance, and truth be told, it wasn't cheap--but it was worth every penny for this level of care. The entire time, I knew I was in good hands. There was the option to watch Netflix or other platforms before and during the procedure, though in the end I switched to just music. (You can even choose the music if you want.) I'm so grateful to Dr. Liss, who really rooted me on and made me feel seen and cared for, and even called me that evening to see how I was feeling. I'm told this is probably the only graft I'll need, and it sounds like this investment will enable me to keep my lower front teeth another 40 years. If I need any other procedures in the future, it'll be a relief to know I can go back to Upper East Smiles. I have been going to Upper East Smiles for my cleanings and checkups for 6 years now. The front desk staff is always polite when you walk in, and I've never waited longer than 10 minutes before being taken back to an exam room. The hygienists are friendly and quick, and the doctor comes in quickly and does the exam at the end. I have seen a different dentist each time here, so that's one thing to note. If you're looking for a consistent relationship with one dentist, this might not be the spot for you. That isn't something I need out of my experience, so I have no qualms at all with it. After some coworkers referred hubby to this dental practice, we decided to make a family appointment day. What drew us here is the fact that they don't try to force you to get unnecessary x-rays at every visit. We both work in radiology imaging and because we're already exposed to radiation, we're not comfortable getting routine x-rays when we believe they're not necessary, especially for adults. At a prior dentist office, they actually tried to tell me I HAD to get x-rays when I was pregnant. Of course, I refused. There's no reason your dentist should be telling you to get x-rays every six months if your teeth are otherwise healthy. UES does require initial x-rays for a baseline but they use camera for some time afterwards, to keep track of your dental health. We were able to get our appointments on the same day. Hubby used to work in the area so it was convenient for us. Parking is a pain but we lucked out. The place is so clean. They have a small waiting room which is nice as you don't feel like there's people on top of you. Everything is clean and the decor looks newly renovated and very well maintained. We arrived right one time for our appointment but had to wait a bit. They took my son first and then my daughter. I was last. Her dental tech, Dani (already scoring points), called us in when it was my daughter's turn. The exam room is very comfortable. It was not scary at all. I was worried because this was my almost 4 year old's first trip to the dentist. They have a TV to keep patients occupied. My kiddo chose Cocomelon, of course. Her cleaning and visit went well. Dr. Kim was gentle and my Little was a rockstar! She must have felt very comfortable to get on without a fuss. My son said his visit went well and he was able to watch Netflix during his examination. My visit also went well, although I was not offered an option to watch anything. I did not know that option was available to adults at the time. I forgot who did my x-rays. It was a guy and he was very nice. He listened to me and my concerns. I have mandibular tori growths which make my mouth smaller so I have to use pediatric film holders to get x-rays. He accommodated and I was able to get all my x-rays with little pain. My cleaning went well although I was told that I needed to return for a deep cleaning which would require novocaine. This is where the stars begin to get taken away. I understand this is a business but sometimes you need to pivot in order to accommodate the patient. I was told that I had to have my deep cleaning performed in two visits. This is a concern for me because I am mostly a stay at home mom but also work outside, from time to time. It's difficult for me to get to the city for an appointment and have my kid with me. When I requested to have it done in one day, I was told that as per my insurance, I HAD to get the deep cleaning done over two visits. I was not happy about that and it didn't make sense to me. I declined making an appointment at that time and decided to confirm with my insurance company when I got home. They told me that they do not require the patient to have a two-visit cleaning. This place is a leech, which takes advantages of new patients, and everyone should avoid this place considering dodging a bullet. The good thing about this place is that they always have the calendar open, cuz they don't have returning clients. I came here cuz my insurance is about to renew soon and this place has open calendar to book, or I wouldn't step in million years after the first time disastrous cleaning visit about a year ago. But I decided to give a second try as my usual dentist is not available to book at the same day. It ends up a total disaster, no surprise (yes, this is how bad they are, if you come here, be prepared with guarantee to have damages on your tooth even for simple procedure as tooth cleaning.) The Asian boy who introduced himself as hygienist caused my tooth bleed multiple times without even apologizing, on purpose. Of course he's aware of his incompetence well and refuses to acknowledge his undoing. Btw I only came here for tooth cleaning twice, but even that, I wouldn't come here ever again. In a nutshell, they aren't competent providers, and they know that fairly well. They give out free tooth paste after each visit to boost quantity of patients bc no one sticks with them. I won't trash those free samples in front of your face, but you should know they are just as cheap as greeting smiles of your subspecies doctors and incompetent staffs. Check the comments you would know, the positive ones are either paid ones without saying what procedures they've done or from new patients who does scan with them, as they are not capable for advanced procedures to fix real problems. To be Frank, I was never fond of dental visits since a kid but Upper East Smiles really changed the game for me. The office is clean and very well put together. Their staff are welcoming, friendly, professional and very well mannered. The receptionists were very efficient and made checking in and checking out extremely easy. For anyone with good judgment, you can tell when a practice really strives to provide quality patient care and service - that is Upper East Smiles. I get my cleanings with Jenny, the Hygienist, and wow let me tell you, she is heaven sent. I'm someone with teeth sensitivity but I felt close to nothing during my cleanings. Dr. Jatar is my general dentist and she was always very informative, knowledgeable and patient during my visits with her. I initially looked for a dental practice where I can get my routine cleanings and exams but I realize I hit the jackpot when I found out UES is a multi specialized practice. I eventually started ortho treatment with Dr. Choi (also very lovely and experienced in her field). Ortho treatment requires more frequent visits to the office and so far all of my visits have been 10/10 with no complaints. Looking forward to my next visit :) read more

After the last review, the practice immediately contacted me, apologized, and helped me schedule an appointment with one of their best dentists. My 4th visit went well and it was a very different experience. The orthodontist spent a lot of time fine-tuning the retainers so that they would fit my teeth better, which I really appreciated because when I tried them on, I had no trouble putting them on or taking them off! On top of that, they made me a spare just in case. I'm happy to say I finally got good retainers. Later, one of the owners came to also apologize for what happened. He also walked me through some of the possible reasons why my filled tooth was hurting. They then had an endodontist come examine my tooth and, after a series of tests, told me that it looked fine but to come back in a while to see if it gets better/worse. I really appreciated their efforts and sincerity. All in all, this time, everyone did their best to help me and make me feel comfortable. I was grateful to receive the great dental care I had hoped for from the very beginning. I think this practice has a lot of potential and the people who work here are dedicated and well-meaning, I'm just sad that all those mistakes were made before getting to this point. I went to Upper East Smiles for the first time for tooth pain and I left with even more pain several appointments later and too much money out the window. I do not recommend this practice. They are only interested in the quantity of patients treated vs. treating them like human beings. Every time I went back to this practice (3+ times), they did not believe there was something wrong with the cavity they filled. I ended up going to another practice who fixed the issue and said that Dr.Lisa Chen at Upper East Smiles did not setup my filling properly and that a piece of unbonded material was sticking in my gum and causing me the pain! Absolutely ridiculous. Not only that, Dr.Lisa Chen nicked one of my other teeth and cut a piece off which now I need to get fixed. In search of my first dentist in NYC, I found this place and wanted to give this a try after reading all the positive reviews. I'm happy to share that this place lived up to all the reviews! This was a first visit and I also was seeking a second opinion on some procedures that a previous dentist from my hometown had recommended. The dentist was very attentive and wanted to look at x rays before the doctors notes to have an unbiased opinion. We decided to do some fillings that same day, which I have no complaints about. They were fast and gave me only the necessary anesthesia. They also answered all my questions from my teeth to treatment costs. Service is amazing - from the front desk to dentist and assistants working with you. Everyone is very personable. I never felt that I was waiting very long. Also they were very fast with emails - I had someone replying to my email within minutes at times. Also very responsive with picking up the phone. Netflix - ok, I understand why there were so many comments on this from other reviews. They give you a remote and you can watch anything (I think there was Hulu and some other streaming services). I wasn't even knocked out during my fillings procedure but it passed so quickly because I was intensely focusing on an episode of Breaking Bad. Facility - clean place that doesn't feel sterile or scary. Overall, really great experience to the dentist and this place successfully makes it a visit as pleasant as a dental appointment can be. I have been going to this dentist for about 6 or so months now, and last night was my second visit. I have had 2 visits so far, just for regular checks and cleanings. Since I had moved to NYC, I procrastinating finding a new dentist, so it had been about 2 years since I had gone, so I was long over due. I found Upper East Smiles via my insurance and then cross-referencing with Yelp to make sure they were reputable! Everyone I have encountered here has been very nice, from the from desk staff to the hygienist to the doctor. One thing to note is that there are multiple doctors here, which I wasn't aware of, but is fine. I saw one doctor on my first visit and a different one on my second, and had good experiences with both. The best part about this dental office is that there are TV's w Netflix on them in the chairs, so when you are getting work done, you can watch your favorite show! They also send you emails and text reminders when it is time to schedule your next appt and reminders before the appt which I love! They also have evening appointments available which is major. SO many dentists are 9-5 which is hard when you work 9-5 and don't want to take time off to go, so I am able to get a 630 appointment which works out perfect! read more

I was recommended to this practice by a dentist friend, so I decided to give it a shot. I saw Dr. Lin (a.k.a. "Dr. Floss") who was extremely knowledgeable about dentistry and actually took the time to listen to my concerns--this was the first dentist I've had who didn't try to rush me out nor try to push any unnecessary treatment on me. He also is not sloppy with his decision-making. His skill with doing my fillings, knowledge, bedside manner, and the fact that he actually takes insurance (which is impossible to find in NYC) makes him a 5-star dentist, IMO. The practice itself is clean, it is easy to get an appointment, but it's best to call them rather than sign up via. Zocdoc. The office will send you emails about your approximate financial responsibility for procedures beforehand (which is great, so that you won't get any surprise high bill months later in the mail). There was like zero wait time whenever I went there (in fact, they got me in the room early). I was SO HAPPY to see that a dental office FINALLY had a TV in the rooms so that you can distract yourself during the procedures, haha. I loved the plants in the waiting area. Admin seems to be very organized as well, so 5-stars here. The only critique I would have is that some of their technicians seem to be novices and had some difficulty placing some equipment in my mouth for an X-ray, and some were a little rougher than others. I have had the fortune of only one horrible dentist out of half a dozen I have been to, but Upper East Smiles is my favorite for plenty of reasons. I Yelped several places and called 5 different offices. Only Upper East picked up. Right from the get-go, all phone calls are picked up by a pleasant and informative receptionist who asks you a few questions and then calls you back a few days later to explain to you your entire dental plan. Thank you! The cleaning? I have zero pain tolerance so I was provided laughing gas for a very low fee. Thank you! I was done in minutes and all the while my hygenist kept apologizing for the horrible experience I had with my previous dentist. All the while, he prepared me for everything he was going to perform on my teeth and checked in on me frequently. My insurance was maxed out but I needed some supplies and work done. No problem! They gave me a discount so I could get what I NEEDED. The dentist took x-rays for me because my previous dentist sent him ones that were not usuable, but didn't charge me for it because he needed x-rays. After checking me, he went over what I needed, educated me on my issues and showed me examples of what could be done. He asked me to decide what I wanted instead of scaring me into getting an exuberant amount of work that I don't need. There are no pushy salesmen here, seriously. The practice is new. The dentists are young and their knowledge is cutting edge. The main dentist came in to say "hi" and to thank me for allowing his practice to serve me. He told me that he will always treat his patients how he wants to be treated - great customer care and honesty. The consultation everyone gets there is personal, informative and not rushed. This is the first time I have ever walked out of a dental office feeling like what took place there was exactly what I needed and chose for myself. I came to Upper East Smiles after seeing great reviews online, and I'm happy to say that it exceeded my expectations! The office is extremely clean, and the staff is all incredibly nice. I had my cleaning with Dr. Lin, who noticed that I had a cavity and an open bite. I was able to easily schedule an appointment that same week to get my cavity filled. I am very scared of needles, but Dr. Lin and his assistant were so patient with me. The assistant even held my hand when I got nervous! He then referred me to Dr. Choi, who assessed my bite and came to the conclusion that I should get my wisdom teeth removed. I was then referred to Dr. Ko, who was so nice and patient with answering all of my questions. I easily made an appointment with her later that week to get my wisdom teeth removed. Her and her assistant were also so kind and patient will be during the procedure. Dr. Ko also called a few days later to check in on me and make sure I was healing well. I will still need to go back to get fitted for a nightguard, but I no longer feel anxious about going to the dentist because everyone at the practice is so nice and friendly! I also like how transparent they are with pricing, they email you beforehand letting you know what copay you should expect to pay so there are no surprises. I was very positively surprised by the incredibly friendly and professional team at Upper East Smiles, and got a thorough cleaning and check-up in no time, with no shaming and only positive suggestions for future care. I will absolutely be coming back every 6 months for my regular check ups, and go through with Dr. Chung's recommendation for a nightguard. I've been three times now - (1) Cleaning with Dr. Chung (2) Follow-up appt to fill some cavities with Dr. Smart :( and (3) 6 month Cleaning with Dr. Chung. They are always on time, incredibly friendly, attentive - everything you'd want from a dentist! I've never felt rushed or like I wasn't a priority - they really do care about their patients. I go here for orthodontics and general treatment including cleaning and check up. The staffs and doctors have been accommodative and kind. My orthodontist Dr. Choi was very forthright in explaining pro's and con's of various treatments, been very attentive and now, I am into fourth month into the treatment period without having any issues. I just had my first appointment with Dr. Lin, who is also the dentist for some of my former colleagues. First of all, I don't really write reviews unless it's about exceptional or terrible experiences. Dr. Lin was extremely professional, attentive, and patient with me. I tend to ask a million questions because I'm obsessed with my teeth. No, I don't think I know more than the dentist. I'm just curious. :) Overall, I thought the office was very clean and organized. Since the first time I've stepped into this office, I felt right at home. The staff helped me feel at ease and treated me very well. They were attentive and caring and explained everything that would happen to me in detail. I came in because of swelling I had in my gums and realized that I needed to get my wisdom teeth removed. Dr. Chung did a wonderful job explaining the procedure and made sure I felt at ease while he worked on removing my teeth. He personally did a follow up call to make sure that everything went well with the procedure. I also met with Dr. Hsu in the beginning who looked into the swelling that I had. He did a wonderful job cleaning my teeth and answered all of my questions about a few concerns I had about my teeth that the previous dentist I was going to didn't do a good job explaining. I have been there a 4 times (I think) 1. Cleaning - Dr. Chung and Dr. Hsu 2. Fillings - Dr. Hsu Everyone from the front desk to the dental assistants/hygienists to the dentists are fantastic. I always feel so welcome and they are super accommodating. Some have already mentioned the TV screens and clean waiting area/exam rooms which is always a huge plus. I stay watching a documentary on Netflix (great way to relax). The appointments are on time, quick, and efficient! Dr. Hsu is my dentist and he is wonderful! I really like how much he cares about my needs as a patient. He is also very bright, knowledgeable, and explains everything thoroughly. One thing that stands out to me was after I got this 1 emergency filling, he called me to follow up and make sure I wasn't in pain. He also asks me about that tooth every time I come in. I don't think I have ever had a dentist care that much about my teeth lol but I am 100% not complaining! Dr. Chung's cleaning was out of this world! I have never in my life had a cleaning THAT PERFECT - my teeth felt and looked brand new! Plus, he showed me some great brushing techniques like brushing my teeth at a 45 degree angle - I never knew about this until then lol but hey now I brush my teeth that way and it works! I have had a really difficult time finding a great dentist practice since moving to NYC, but thankfully came across these guys and have never been happier with my dental care. I came to UES needing a pretty intensive procedure to fix an issue from a previous dentist. Dr. Chung and Dr. Smart were exceptional at explaining how the issue came about, what was needed to correct it, and how my procedure would work/fix the problem. Every step of my procedure went flawlessly and I enjoyed seeing the progression during each visit. I also noticed the level of expertise and professionalism exhibited by all the staff members in every instance of care from simple cleanings to a more involved dental surgery. These guys are legit and I would never ever consider going elsewhere in NYC. Plus, being able to watch Nature documentaries on Netflix during the visits can't be beat. Beyond the patience that he-- and the entire team-- had, he is compassionate, thorough, and genuinely believes in helping others. It's rare to see someone so dedicated to his craft and the happiness of others-- I have found my dentist and I couldn't be happier! This morning was my first visit and I had an amazing experience. Which is probably hard to believe for a dentist. Everyone was so nice and accommodating. I was so glad that they have before and after appointment times for people the work 9-5 type jobs. I had an 8am appointment and I got scheduled a meeting at the last minute at 9:30. I told them as soon as I got there that I'd have to leave around 8:45. They did such a great job, but always made sure that I was out of the door at my requested time. The office is pristine and very clean. When you are getting your teeth cleaned they let you watch Netflix or any other station that you want. Which helps with all the drilling and noises that go along with getting your teeth cleaned. The doctor was very nice and explained everything thoroughly. I definitely recommend and I am glad that I have found my new dentist! read more

The two dentists at this practice seem young, inexperienced, and greedy. They pushed a new treatment for dry socket that neither of them had used before. They seemed excited to have the opportunity to play with a new toy. The treatment not only did not work, but made the tooth area feel a lot worse (it dislodged the blood clot that was already in there promoting the healing of the socket). I was under the assumption that this treatment would be covered / free. After the treatment was given, a second dentist came in telling me they would be charging for the drug. I'm fine with paying for treatments if I am told about the cost in advance of being given the treatment. The dentist refused to own up to the mistake of not telling me about the cost of the ineffective treatment prior to giving it to me and insisted on charging me. Overall the 1 star is due to: 1) Ineffective diagnosis and treatment of dry socket - making the symptoms much worse 2) Extremely poor customer service / lack of customer empathy in failure to own up to mistake in not telling me about the payment associated with the treatment beforehand read more

I've been on yelp for years, but I really never felt that I needed to write a review. The places I went to, and the services that I received, were often satisfactory but nothing to write home about. But I must say that my visits to Upper East Smiles have been truly exceptional on many levels, and I am obliged to write a review for the outstanding doctors who work here. Dr. Choi is an orthodontist who truly cares for her patients. Her consultation was very thorough, covered every possible scenario and explained the pros and cons of each treatment option. When I went to get impressions done for my orthodontic treatment (Invisalign), she had a very busy schedule but took an ample amount of time and care to make sure my impressions were taken perfectly to get the most effective aligners delivered. After she was finished, Dr. Choi thanked for my patience and proceeded to the far side of the room (there were 2 patient chairs in a big room) and changed the Netflix channel to play the Minion movie, because her next scheduled patient was a 7 year old child! As soon as the child patient walked in, she introduced herself to the child in a friendly tone and quickly made him feel comfortable in a setting that could've otherwise been stressful. I was also scheduled to get my cleaning done that day. The office got unexpectedly busy from a sudden patient flow. So they arranged Dr. Chung (a periodontist who I was not scheduled to see that day) to perform cleaning for me right away, instead of having me wait a long time for it. Dr. Chung also took time out of his schedule to demonstrate the best way to maintain a good dental hygiene given my particular structure. Shortly after that, I met with Dr. Kamkkar who went through my general dental condition in detail with me and explained her findings in a way that was easy to understand. All in all, I ended up seeing three specialists that day, got very thorough dental and orthodontic treatments with minimal waits in between. Like most normal people, I hate(d) going to the dentist. Well, I just had my first visit here, and now I weirdly can't wait to come back. This was one of the most pleasant experiences I have ever had in any medical office - they definitely have taken cues from other upscale healthcare offices like One Medical. Dr. Smart was really friendly and took the time to explain everything in easy-to-understand detail, while never making me feel stupid or talking down to me at all. He was really patient answering all my questions and did an excellent job cleaning me up and pointing out things that other dentists would have missed. All-in-all, an awesome experience. What a kid friendly dentist office! My five year old and I always go there to get a treatment done at the same time. My son feels comfortable and is even excited to go. Plus, I never get the "aggressive sell" from this office. At my last dentist, I was told that I needed to do a filling at every visit. At upper east smiles, they never push me to get something done while making me feel that my teeth are always taken care of. They are as nice and reliable as a dentist office can get! read more

I am so upset with this dentist office. I came here months ago for a basic cleaning when I was told my scans showed 2 cavities. So I go back in for the fillings and was told sensitivity is normal for a couple of days to let them know if it continues to persist. I was in so much pain I went back a second time. They said there was nothing they can see in the x-ray that could be the issue so the only option is to have it refilled. So now I am already starting to get annoyed because I entered this office originally for a cleaning with 0 pain. They refilled it and here I am months later trying to find a new dentist to fix this as it subsided for a couple of months and I now am back to having extreme sensitivity every time I eat anything. The fact that I paid for this procedure to leave me in pain that I didn't have before is what aggravates me the most. I reached back out that I wanted my money back after returning twice because of their mistake and they said it wasn't possible. I will definitely not be returning. read more

I refuse to go to another dental office. They no longer take my insurance but I still pay out of pocket to get to see them. I had a bad fall tripping over a pothole, and they gave me the best dental experience i have ever had! Love coming here read more

I'm writing to review my specific experiences with pediatric dentistry here back in Sep 2017. The office was clean and the receptionist plus dental hygienist for my daughter (under 10) were all fine. We had just moved to NYC, and were hoping for a good experience based on the reviews here. The dentist was not unfriendly but impersonal. Within less than 5 minutes into introductions and scanning my daughter's mouth, she began to list 'problems'. This is a child who has never had cavities in her life and has had no prior dental issues. She began to list a number of procedures, some of which were never even mentioned by our previous dentist. And they all apparently needed to be considered asap by us. I was shocked, scared, and dazed at this point. After talking to several school moms, doctors in the family, and reading around, I began to feel better and was encouraged to look around. I just recently had my daughter's second checkup at a lovely little pediatric practice in Yorkville/Lenox Hill. I couldn't be happier. The dentist was kind, rational, and didn't push for any services at all and none were required. I am reviewing Upper East Smiles now in light of this very different experience, to ask parents/guardians to always get a second opinion just in case. As New Yorkers, we're short on time, but it's important to make sure we are getting the right information and not traumatizing our little ones with unnecessary procedures. read more
