I recently saw Dr. Vena with Somerset Orthopedics. Everyone at the office was very helpful and friendly. Dr. Vena was the right choice for my ongoing orthopedic care. I will need TKR surgery in the coming months and apparently UPMC Somerset does not have access to the Robot for Knee surgeries. It would be wonderful if this equipment was available at all UPMC hospitals and not just a select group. All UPMC patients deserve access to the best available healthcare. read more

Had a deep cut on my toe that needed stitches. Doctor comes in, glances at it and tells me he'd like an xray of my toe to rule out break or foreign object in wound. I had zero pain in toe, no bruising, and able to move it. As for the presence of a foreign object, the wound is so huge that you can visibly see there is nothing in it. He refused to suture basically telling me that it would be too painstaking of a process for him. I elected to leave without treatment as it was obvious they were ordering unneccessary tests to fund this dying medical establishment. His advice to me...buddy tape the gashed toe to the next one and put a band-aid on it. My advice to y'all....die on the way to another hospital before you put your life in the hands of this one. Complaints do nothing. They all stick up for each other like they're part of a cult. Scary. ***UPDATE*** went to Med Express and they confirmed it needed stitches. They stitched me up, gave me a tetanus shot and an antibiotic prescription in under an hour. Shame on you UPMC Somerset. read more

Went to the ER for a skiing accident. Checked in at 4:30; was taken back for an X-ray; later, much later, at 9:30 we still had not heard anything. It would be helpful for the hospital to provide basic information: how much longer until you will be seen, if they are low on staff, or how long each patient is taking- X number of hours. Really? To just sit for hours hoping someone will help you without any info? Why? What world are we living in? This is so archaic, it is not acceptable. You must do better, managing expectations is very simple. Letting someone know when they check in what they can expect, maybe they would chose to go to a different facility. To sit for hours without any information is very third world. UPMC really? This is your idea of 'life changing medicine'? No one in the waiting room tonight would have backed your life changing Medicine jingle, they would all have been in agreement that this is not even 'minimally adequate' medical care. When I saw the reviews I didn't believe it, but now I do. We do not know whether it is a broken collarbone, or if the joint is out of place, or if it will be fine with some Tylenol- does it really take 5 hours to read an x-ray? And provide some info so we can decide what to do? If you are pretty sure you are not dying, go somewhere else. Drive closer to Pittsburgh. Maybe the issue is systemic with UPMC? UPMC must do better. Your patients deserve better. Just an update, after we were called back to a bed in a hallway and sat there another 30-45 min. We left the ER without talking with anyone. Worst hospital ever. In a wreck, road rash, hurt my back and sat in a hallway for hours. Finally get into a room and sat for 2 more hours. FOUR hours later still have not seen a dr, covered in blood, trouble standing and breathing and NO DOCTOR read more

Went to the ER for a Kidney stone, sat in waiting room for a while, then taken back to the room. Never had a scan to see size of stone, given IVs and discharged home with stone. Came back a few days later and no scan again. same thing some IVs and then released. Had vacation planned and paid for so went on vacation and ended up in ER there and had to have surgery for stone removal after scans showed too large to pass. If a scan was done first time, I could have not needed so much time to recover. Don't recommend going to this hospital. read more

Seems like the people working here care more about checking boxes than they do the patients. Whole thing kinda gave me bunch of bored small town teens who don't give af about their minimum wage job type vibe. The two doctors were pretty cool overall though. Just crazy wait times in between stuff, and the whole time you can hear the nurses gossiping about their friends and doing absolutely nothing. Almost seemed like some of them were scared to do their job . Overall they did get me a prescription and a bandage, but they made a 2 hour visit into an overnight stay and just seemed very incompetent for a hospital that has the potential to serve such a large rural area. Whoever owns this place would be wise to find better employees, or regulate them differently. Either way I survived read more

The ER did not refer her to an orthopedic and she needed one. Very difficult to get the prescription and we had to figure it out ourselves they did nothing, not gentle when putting a cast on. Hung up on us when on the phone. read more

The Somerset Hospital was everything a hospital could be. I was sent to the emergency room by my PCP and the doctors and staff at the hospital took a great deal of time identifying my problem. They admitted me and were running several different test. When they could not longer help, they actually called my husband and advised him to move me to another hospital. Who does that today? I just visited Somerset Hospital ER. I tore something in my foot, the nurse come in and said I think we need to take an x-ray, I said there is nothing broke, I am refusing an x-ray so give me an MRI or something else that would show a tear, so she left the room , I waited almost two hours for someone to come back in. Finally this doctor came in and order a CAT scan of my foot which still don't show a whole lot far as tears. So I waited almost 45 minutes to even go get a CAT scan , then come back after having the CAT scan, so I waited for another hour, so while I was waiting all the nurses and the one doctor was having a damn pizza party out in the nurse's station which I can see in plain sight. Finally I could not hold it to go to the bathroom any longer I pushed the nurses help button I got nothing 40 more minutes, so I told my wife put me in this goddamn wheelchair I will take myself to the bathroom as I did, I came back was coming by the nurses station and this nurse come out and said we'll be right in with your discharge papers, that's great still don't know nothing about what is wrong with my foot and they want to discharge me before I even seen the doctor to see what is wrong, finally the doctor from the pizza party finally come in the room and said they can see i tore something in my foot and had a bone spur, and said rest for five days it doesn't feel better follow up with a orthopedic doctor, they prescribed me hydrocodone, which was sent to Giant Eagle by facts this was at 2 in the morning, so the next day my wife went to get it and they said they do not accept faxes she will need to go back to the ER to get a doctor slip for a prescription. So she did went back to the ER talk to this girl which I don't even know her name she acted like my wife was the biggest pain in the ass had no clue what she was talking about to make a long story short she did not leave there with a prescription for me. Send my wife went off the deep end on them told him how she felt about the poor care of her husband and how that facility is ran and was told they are still working on the poor service. Funny thing is 2 Days Later Giant Eagle calls me and says I have prescription filled , this place (Somerset Hospital) I will never go back there ever again , I would not even take my dog there.. read more

I went to the hospital for normal blood work for my doctors appointment. It has been more than 3 weeks and they still do not have the results. My appointment was this past Monday so 3 weeks after the draw was done they still can not tell me what the results were or even if they were completed. There seems to be a disconnect in this facility.....My rating is Zero stars but this site demands at least one..... read more

This has to be the nations most incompetent hospital. I brought my 2 year old daughter in because of an arm injury that immobilized her arm. After 3 hours of waiting, they are sending her home with nothing and she still can't move her arm and still crying from the pain. I will be taking her elsewhere immediately. read more

I was taken to the Somerset hospital ER by ambulance 3 different times in a 2 week period.The 1st time I was in terrible pain--I couldn't walk or stand.My left leg was severely swollen and completely dark purple.The ambulance called in to give me something for pain and was denied.After approx. 6 hrs in the ER room,and nothing done but an x-ray of my leg,and nothing for pain,the ER PHYSICIAN-(HAH) KRISTIN SMITH came bursting into the room like she had hit the lottery shouting YES-YES-PERFECT--ABSOLUTELY PERFECT--THERE'S NOTHING WRONG! She then informed my wife and me that there was nothing wrong with me.When questioned about the swelling,discoloration and pain she replied-There's nothing wrong!My wife broke down and asked for the ambulance to return me home since I was much larger than her and there were steps into our home and she wouldn't be able to help me..Smith said- you don't understand--he's discharged-he's your problem now and left the room.A male nurse came and helped me into a wheelchair--then into our van. He apologized for the mistreatment I received.This was on a Friday.The weekend was an absolute nightmare.Monday I had a follow-up appt from rotator cuff surgery I had approx. 2 weeks prior. Two of my friends had to carry me to our van and rode with me and my wife to appt.They got a wheelchair as I was still unable to stand or walk.The Dr said as per the ER there was nothing wrong,but ordered home health care.On Wed the home health care nurse showed up and took my vitals--they were way out of wack--and called for an ambulance. Again I was taken To Somerset ER and again told nothing was wrong--it was in my head--and I was being sent to Siemons Nursing home for therapy.The night was a blur--and right before lunch 2 therapists came to my room and told me my wheelchair was in the hall--I needed to walk out.and get in it. I said I can't walk and they said the hospital said nothing was wrong and they would return after lunch and I would then walk to my wheelchair. After they left a nurse came in and took my vitals--my blood pressure was something like 180/140 and my pulse was 145? She then called an ambulance and I was again taken to Somerset ER. After waiting for what seemed like forever-Smith came in and asked what was my problem--why was I back again? I said there's something really wrong and I needed admitted-to which she replied narcotics isn't the answer.I suppose because I have long hair she assumed I was on drugs--had she checked her records she would have found that the prior year I had 8 surgeries and never renewed my pain meds. She then told me I could either go home or back to Siemons--those were my only options.I then asked to use the phone. I called my sister's cell and found out she and my wife had been waiting in the ER waiting room and were not told I was in the ER. The last thing I remember was Smith and a nurse outside my room and the nurse said I thought he was your patient to which Smith replied so did I. The last thing I remembered was another Dr coming into my room before I blacked out. It turns out my organs were shutting down as I had SEPSIS. I ended up with 3 antibiotics pumped thru ivs 24/7. I was in hospital for 9 days--at first it wasn't known if I'd even survive--and released.However,SEPSIS came back and I was in 4 more days.I filed a complaint against Smith. I contacted several lawyers who wouldn't take my case unless I sued the hospital. I only wanted Smith removed from her line of work as she obviously made a stereotypical judgement because of the length of my hair. I kept following up on results of my complaint and was finally told she no longer was employed there but due to HIPPA no other info could be given. I later found out she not only was still there but had been promoted. But unfortunately the statute of limitations had run out. I finally found this forum to tell my story. My wife almost lost a husband;my children a father; my family a son and brother due to the narrow minded Smith. read more

I gave this hosp. a 2 star, because I've spent time there before and never had as much trouble as this most recent admission. They had mean, snotty nurses, especially ICU. I was in ICU for 3 or 4 days. They had faulty equipment ( a respirator I was on, talk about scary). Then my regular room nurses where not much better. However, there was one male nurse, named John, who was fabulous! Every nurse should aspire to be as good as he is. If I ever need Private Duty I'll call on him. I only wish I knew his last name. I don't know what happened to that hospital. It used to be good. I've been hospitalized many many times. So I'm qualified to judge. read more
