I have been going to this facility for years for a variety of women's healthcare needs, although they offer much more. My friends and family who live in the area refer to it to as the Toys "R" Us location, because this was indeed a Toys "R" Us years ago. You can get lab work here, you can even get minor outpatient surgeries done here. A friend of mine had early stage breast cancer and this was not only where she was diagnosed but where her surgery was done. As for me, I have had my annual mammograms, a number of ultrasounds and a breast biopsy here. This is a facility where whatever you are here for is likely to have you feeling nervous, and the staff recognizes that and is absolutely expert at putting you at ease. From when you call and schedule through the day of your procedure, I have always felt treated with care and empathy. I know these are characteristics you would be looking for in any medical professional, but these are some especially touchy subjects and somehow the staff members they have hired here are exactly the right people for the job. The facility is bright and clean, with staff on hand upfront to direct and/or register you. Lots of space to sit and be comfortable for yourself and any support persons you might bring along. DO NOT GET BLOODWORK HERE. The old lady was extremely rude and kept swearing. So inappropriate for a professional setting. She refused to look at my fax number for the papers. I did not feel comfortable with her near me honestly. This has happened multiple times with each different person. I gave this place three chances. This facility is very welcoming. You are greeted warmly when you enter. I was here for my annual mammogram and check-in staff were enthusiastic about all this facility offers and really wanted me to know this particular venue was a Magee facility just like Oakland. I didn't have to wait long for my appointment, was led back to another waiting room just for the mammogram department and shown where the dressing rooms and lockers were and guven instructions to wear the gown with opening in front. One little beef here -- the instructor laughed, directing her comment to another patient already dressed in said pink down waiting saying " I should have a recording". Sigh. I could do without the unintended cavalier attitude to what could be a serious outcome given the high percentage of breast cancer diagnoses. Do better, UPMC. This was also informed the lockers, which appear to have a digital code on each of them, did not lock. Again, UPMC, why not? I only waited a short time then was led by the mammogram technician to a room with all the equipment. She was pleasant enough, gave adequate instructions, but never bothered to even pretend to be concerned whether the procedure was comfortable, painful, etc. during the process of smashing breasts iin the machine. I would have liked at least the pretense of caring. All of this would seem a normal process for delivering and getting a mammogram but I will tell my review readers and UPMC staff reading this, it does not have to be. I will direct you to Excela Square in Irwin, PA. You, the patient get to wait in a private room with TV, all by yourself. You are treated with care and concern, no off the cuff remarks that are uncaring or appear to be by a bored employee. They get it.
