I am sharing this experience in the hope that it serves as a warning to families of elderly patients--especially those who do not have a strong advocate present during their hospital stay. My 87-year-old mother, who has congestive heart failure, underwent a scheduled 4-hour surgery to repair both her bladder and bowel. We arrived at 5:00 a.m. for a 7:00 a.m. procedure. We were told by the surgeon that she would recover for approximately three hours, be up walking, eating, and likely discharged the following day. She was finally brought to her room around 2:00 p.m. At that point, she had not eaten in over 24 hours. I called the cafeteria to order her lunch, supper and breakfast to ensure that she would have her meals. When we left later that afternoon, staff were gathered in the lounge talking, and this became a recurring observation throughout her stay. All staff were in their twenties and it brought back memories of the Lord of the Flies. That evening, my mother called me in distress. She had not been walked, was unaware she had a catheter, and was in significant pain. While on the phone with her, we timed her call button--no one responded for 15 minutes. The following day, I attempted multiple times to get updates from a physician, Dr. Erika Ong, and request an additional day of observation, given her condition. Communication was extremely poor--calls go through a general number, and no one identified themselves clearly or provided direct answers or direct call back numbers. When I arrived at the hospital that evening (after a 1.5-hour drive), I discovered my mother had received neither lunch nor dinner. She was also dehydrated, with 3 empty water containers. When my husband raised this concern with staff, instead of addressing the issue, the situation escalated unnecessarily. A nurse accused him of using inappropriate language, which did not occur, and security was called. Meanwhile, the real issue--an elderly patient missing two meals--was not promptly addressed. She was eventually given a microwave pizza at 8:00 p.m. Over the course of her stay, several critical issues arose: * She was not walked for over 24 hours' post-surgery * No one explained the meal ordering system - for which I have attached a photo of the system * Communication from doctors and staff was inconsistent or nonexistent * We were not notified of a heart episode she experienced at 3:00 a.m. * Staff repeatedly avoided providing names or clear answers One nurse, Appithany, and another, Olga, were compassionate and helpful, and I am grateful for their efforts. Unfortunately, they were exceptions. I also attempted to escalate concerns through a patient advocate, but was misinformed, denied the ability to document the conversation, and ultimately never received the promised follow-up. My mother was discharged at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday from a Thursday operation, and it truly felt like an escape from Alcatraz. The entire experience felt chaotic, disorganized, and lacking accountability. Basic patient care--nutrition, mobility, communication--was not consistently provided. This experience highlighted serious concerns about staffing, training, communication, and patient advocacy. I strongly urge families with elderly loved ones to ensure someone is present to advocate on their behalf at all times. I would not feel comfortable taking my family dog for treatment here. This will be escalated to the PA Department of Health as well as Medicare. read more

UPMC Montefiore - Dietary Instructions - Hospitals Near Me - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

I was under the care of UPMC Montefiore after I needed jaw surgery in two spots due to the bones in my lower (mandible) jaws getting broken from DV . The staff was less than friendly and did not care about my needs or concerns. The daytime nurse had a really rude attitude and kept giving smart remarks to me when I would ask questions about what I should expect for recovery . (This was before discharge) The nighttime nurse left me crying in agony and pain for an hour straight without checking on me or responding to the call light / bell , never seeing my needs even got met. I asked every nurse I had for better pain relief as I only got prescribed ibuprofen and Tylenol every 6 hrs for a major jaw surgery and they blew me off and didn't care . I also have a blood clotting disorder and SHOULD NOT be taking ibuprofen that often as it can cause me to get a clot and possibly DIE ( WHICH THEY KNEW ), if I wasn't aware of this or in the right state of mind to even care that could have cost me my LIFE. This hospital is a JOKE and it is very sad people have to deal with assholes and staff who couldn't care less about you in the middle of suffering and just needing a helping hand to lean on ! Do better upmc montefiore I could say so much more but do not have time . I'm sure the point here is given ! Please everyone I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS HOSPITAL. MY husband was admitted as a trauma patient due to finding a massive pancreatic abcess by our primary care physcian. The doctors and interns and the nursing staff were the most attentive and concerned people I have ever encountered. There are not enough words to say Thank you. You actually felt love from these trained people and not just feeling like a chart number. This is a wonderful place to receive care. Montefiore is a number 10 in my book. read more

If I could give this place zero stars, I absolutely would. NEVER trust this hospital with your loved ones, especially if they are on the orthopedic units. My aunt was in a tragic car accident in April, by no fault of her own. She was a passenger and was hit head on. Her entire left leg was shattered from knee to hip. She was life-flighted from the scene to UPMC Montefiore. She has been back and forth from there since April and it's now August. She has had 3 total operations on her leg. I can say that the surgeons there have incredible skill and knowledge. However, the bedside care is the most horrific thing I've ever seen. Doctors came in and sat laptops on her shattered leg while she screamed in pain because they never even read her chart prior to seeing her. Not one nurse changed her bedding, even as she laid in her own blood and sweat-soaked sheets for multiple days. When she asked why, they said "because there are no aides on the floor." She was told multiple times that she needed to stop asking for her IV pain medication even though she just had bone grafts and a femur reconstruction the day before and was in agony. Multiple people went into her room asking "why are you crying" and when she told them she was obviously in pain, they did nothing and told no one. She had to empty her own bedpan. She had to walk the hall on one leg in order to find her nurse, who was sitting and scrolling on her phone. She asked for her pain medication, because it was 10pm and she could have it at that point. The nurse said she would be coming in a minute and did not show up until after midnight. At that time, my aunt asked for the Zofran that she was prescribed for nausea. The nurse refused to give it to her until 3:30am. My aunt also had to sit and listen to nurses, unit managers, and countless other staff members talk shit about all of their patients, including her, at the nurse's station. She said the things she heard were absolutely disgusting and dehumanizing. Cussing, calling names, everything you can think of. As if her agony and suffering was a burden to them. I wish I could say that this was the worst of it, but there is so much more I could add. Our family has sat completely helpless and watched her suffer for months due to the neglect and carelessness at this hospital. It is clear now that these people do not care about our loved ones. They care about the check that they're getting in two weeks. These people have no ounce of humanity or empathy. I pray that these people never have to know the pain my aunt is in and I pray they never have to watch their family members suffer, but do they deserve to? Absolutely. To Dr. Russell and the surgical team, thank you for working so hard and saving my aunts leg. But to the rest of you imbeciles responsible for her despicable "care," I hope you never know peace and I hope to God that you lose the license you worked so hard for because you do not deserve the privilege. read more

Completely understaffed especially at night.nurses are pretty good and friendly. But the so called patient care technicians as they have a big title are no matter what the title they have are still " nurses aid " and 90% of them are not only lazy but dumb as a box of rocks.i push call button for help and after sometimes 15 to 20 minutes the " aid " comes to door at 1am and acting like she is doing me a favor says " what " looking like she is going to the club ! I ask for bathroom help and told it's right there .no kidding I have been here 3 months and 6 operations on my ankle can't walk unassisted I know where it's at.i ask for a sheet at 3am another night to cover me I'm cold after a 20 minute or so wait another "aid " brings a folded sheet tosses it at bottom of bed and walks out.as I said nurses are all pretty but don't expect help with food or bedding or bathroom help your on your own.the so called technicians are a bunch of lazy dummies. Not fit to work in health care.one more horrible night in this terrible place and I'm going home.and unlike the bathroom here that has no hot water so you bath in cold water I have nice hot water any time.so if your coming here don't expect much from the ones that are supposed to help you with things other than the nursing part because your on your own. Today I went to Montefiore hospital and what a great service I have received from my nurse. Specially from Betsy, her real name is Elizabeth and took care of me this morning. She always has checked me out to see if I was doing fine, if I need anything and if I was comfortable enough. She brought me blankets and pillows. I never had such wonderful treatment. I wish all health care professionals would be like her. I could see that she does likes her job because she does everything with so much care and treat everyone with kindness. She always is smiling make you feel better and happy. After her, Chuck took care of me he also was nice. read more

These hospital and medical buildings in Oakland are so eclectic. I imagine the inspiration for the floor plans came from the children's story about the man who walked a crooked mile. You're on the 8th floor and walk down a corridor and you're on the 6th floor. Elevators and stairwells don't all go top to bottom. You zig and zag to get to your destination, requiring a map for first-timers. (I know the reality is old, preexisting buildings were acquired as the hospitals grew. I'll continue to believe my story, though, because it is a lot more interesting to me :) And it's very bustling with many people quickly moving from all directions like the harried train staff on The Polar Express, yet as frazzled as it seems it's actually very orderly and, from my point of view, efficient. There are a few places to eat - cafeteria on 4th, Starbucks kiosk on 7th and a gift shop on 7th. read more

If I can I will give 0 star. The people I met there I can tell no one cares about patients. They don't care about anything. UPMC let me did blood tests but I want know how much my insurance company will cover or not. If not I won't do it or see what other options. They let me wait for 30mins and told me their advisor is calling my insurance company to " help" me figure out. But they actually never called my insurance company. UPMC just assumed my insurance will cover but actually not. The reason I wait because that person went to coffee!!!! So after they Pretend calling and told me to trust them I did these blood tests. Guess what! After a month UPMC charge me $3800 because my California insurance company only cover emergency. I called my insurance they told me no one called them and when I back to UPMC they told me they don't remember which advisor did this. A simple call can figure out but they don't care. Now I have to pay and I even didn't see any real doctor at UPMC. Luckily I have money to pay but for those people who can't or not easy to pay thousands dollars bill I would suggest you don't go this place or at least don't trust them easily. All they want is money not care your healthy. You are just a number for this hospital. And some of your life is depending on this hospital. ITS A JOKE. read more

Shame on the Director of Nursing, Patient Advocate services, nurses and aides on the night shift. My brother had a severe infection that required multiple surgeries, he is extremely over weight and he recieved horrible treatment on night shift. Even a Doctor shut the door on him while vomiting. House Keeping was terrible, BM on the floor, sheets, all over his toilet. A night shift staff person refused to help with his bed pan. He tossed it to him and shut the door. The door gets shut a lot and the patient advocate was slow in responding and all complaints went from one person or department to another with no compassion or accountability. He coded in a hallway, their lift was broke, no accomodations for his weight. His shoes and clothing were lost and they sent him home after not walking for 2 weeks. (I'm sure insurance has something to do with it) His situation became dangerous and I say SHAME ON UPMC and all the missin and vision statements that say how much care and compassion they have. Bull crap, they care nothing for their patients, at least not my brother. It breaks my heart and now he will owe thousands for a 3 week stay and multiple surgeries for treatment that I wouldn't even compare it to a homeless dog put in shelter. Disgusting!! read more

I had the pleasure of working with a number of different therapists here during my stay in rehab. They were all deeply committed to their work and treated me on an individual basis, with exercises that closely matched my needs. The food was good too - much better than in the hospital! read more
