Today I took my gentle yoga class with Jayne, one of the owners of Yoga on York. Jayne is an…read moreexcellent teacher and very detailed with her instruction. I know what an excellent teacher is because I am a RYT-200 teacher of yoga, and taught for 12 years until I could no longer teach due to physical issues not related to yoga. The practice room is small, very clean (no dust balls) and quite nice. You enter from the door on York Road and there is a tiny registration area where you leave your shoes. The owners cleverly divided the studio from the commercial area with a set of sliding frosted glass doors to provide filtered light and privacy. Jayne locks the door about five minutes after the class starts to provide security - and peace to the yogis and yoginis in the studio. There is space for 12 to 16 students to practice comfortably. In the back of the studio behind a half-wall are two separate dressing rooms with lots of clothes hooks, a cabinet with props and a large bottle of hand cleanser (nice idea). Behind this area is a massage room and a little further back is a very clean, well-stocked restroom. There are some nice photographs and artwork on display giving the room a very warm feeling. So now that I've described the environment, what is it about the class that makes this a five star production. There are many teachers, with many styles, but Jayne is a spiritual yoga dance instructor. She has many years of dance and yoga experience and has her own dance company. She is also a creator of aerial yoga and has written a book about this lighter than air yoga called "Aerial Dance." WBALTV recently featured this on one of their shows at: http://www.wbaltv.com/news/health/Sarah-tries-aerial-yoga/-/9379230/12559522/-/784eag/-/index.html She has a unique understanding of how the body moves in space and how the postures can be done with safety from her many years of dancing and yoga. The class always moves nicely and there are postures that focus on the tightest spaces in the body ( the lower lumbar and those terrible tight hamstrings). Students never have to worry about how they look or what level they are when they take this gentle yoga class. It's a choreographed 60-minute class that works for all. She provides breath work (pranayama), an intention for the class, postures that everyone can do (asanas) and a rest period (Savasana -corpse pose). The price is right and it is so worth the effort to attend. This class is authentic yoga, and provides the total package for anyone who wants to learn about how the mind/body connection works to reduce stress in a safe environment.

This man preaches being clear with your word and being brave in the face of aversion, but one one bad review is placed on his Facebook page he runs away like a coward, but here he can't take it down. That being said, this is my review from Facebook: I participated in teacher training at the studio about a year ago, and I still experience horrific flashbacks of my experience. I witnessed other individuals in my class being brainwashed by Sid himself as he called himself God, preached that he could heal the sick, mentioned that his children pray to him, yelled at our class that we were not worthy of his presence, sat in his big chair in front of us prophesying things to come, and keeping us from eating from noon hen we got lunch until about 10pm when he decided we were ready to leave. He did about everything short of making us drink the Kool-Aid. I am a sociology undergraduate major and this studio reminds me in every way of a cult, with Sid sitting above everyone else as the leader. I hesitated writing this review for a while because I was frightened, but I cannot be silent any longer. I do not want anyone to get hurt as I did. I love to practice yoga but unfortunately it is places like this that keep people away from the it for fear of dictator like teachers and cult like practices. Sid will continue to pocket the thousands upon thousands of dollars that he charges for his training while more and more people get sucked into his scheme, all while he gets richer and richer. In my training here we did very little yoga, and unfortunately I left training still not knowing how to teach the practice. In fact I learned more about Sid's experiences being touched by gods then I did about yoga. I would never recommend this studio, please do to get sucked into this game that Sid is playing. Look at his Facebook and see all of the pictures he has of himself (a quality of narcissism), and if you make it into the studio look at all of his own painting and pictures of himself he has on every single wall. I study narcissism and cults and this studio is a prime example, and it is sickening. I don't want to see anyone get hurt like I and countless others have.

Although I'm not typically a person who takes classes on Sunday mornings, I decided to join today because I love Kamaria's classes. Halfway through class today, there was an emergency outside of the room that required Kamaria to step out. Without a beat a member, who was obviously a seasoned instructor, stepped up and guided the class to completion. The class flow was seamlessly and the instructions continued perfectly. It's hard to imagine that an emergency had just taken place. I realized how hard it may be to find instructors, but to have such passionate student/teachers who care as much about other's well being as their own is inspiring. This is truly a COMMUNITY

The first class I took was Yin yoga, which is a great beginner yoga class. Very gentle and easy postures, nothing crazy. I sadly made the mistake of taking another yoga class the very next day. This class was by far more advanced than I was ready for, that was my fault. I believe it was called RSS. It felt really difficult with the prolonged postures and I was so sore afterwards. It was fun to try and I would recommend for those looking for a yoga studio with a variety of classes.
