While on vacation, I seek out independently owned small businesses to make my purchases. On this…read moretrip, I intending to buy fabrics and chose Portage Quilt House. The store certainly had a wonderful selection of Michigan Technological University quilt fabric, and so much more. I took my time and looked forward to an hour of relaxing and picking out fabric. The joy of being in that store came to a screeching halt. The employees began a negative conversation about women, then progressed to speaking about women of color. Needless to say, if you care about where you spend your money, take a pass on this store.

I brought in two pocket knives for sharpening. First, they told me that they would give me a call…read morewhen they would be ready which was in a few days. A week and a half later - I called them and they said that the knives would be ready for pick up at the end of the day. I picked them up the next day - they charged me $8.00 for it - however, the knives were not sharpened as the edges had the same pieces of dirt and grime as when I brought them in. Highly recommend going elsewhere to do any kind of business unless you really want to be ripped off. If they cannot be honest enough to sharpen knives, how can they be trusted in any kind of other business transaction?

I wasn't sure what to expect since I tend to be wary of tourist traps, but this shop is more of a specialty shop as it carries a wide variety of items, from candles to jams, to clothing and magnets. It's very well done. There's three sections in the store, as it has to expand within the historical building it occupies. The first section has the most variety as it sells small items like candles, dish cloths, lights, etc. The second section is clothing focused. The third and most personally interesting sells food. They have homemade fudge and turtle cookies, as well as candy station. There's a wall of jellies and jams, including UP favorites like thimbleberry jam. The people manning the store are super friendly as a huge plus!

I have a funky driveway and also needed some one-off snow moving done during the winter and they handled it perfectly at a reasonable price.
