This is true as of now, a few weeks back I found myself looking glass jars for preservatives; that's when I truly realize that I have completed my role from being a twenty-something free man to an early middle aged family man. This is the beginning of my downfall, the end of my wild days- days of suburbia. What has it got to do with the shop? Well, this place very much sells stuff that a family needs- not likes- needs. You will find kitchen items, study essentials, pre packed snacks for kids; all the stuff that you really need if you were to start a family from scratch. Why has it got 5 stars? That's because every time I was instructed by the almighty to find items that I had no interest and no knowledge of finding, I would find it here. Lids for jars of different size? Checked. Cover for the ironing board? Checked. Plastic boxes for organizing stuff at home? Please choose your colour. Its a really convenient place to find stuff like that and its just so good that I don't need to make 10 trips to find them in different places.

This store is originally a Japanese brand of home goods called Daiso. For some reason in Hong Kong…read morethey are known as Jusco Living with more of a focus on home/living goods. I am unsure if this was due to more focused branding. There is a good variety of home goods. My first Daiso experience was in Little Tokyo in LA and I would definitely return. Everything is the same price unless there is a sticker/sign indicating otherwise. I enjoy buying bowls and cooking utensils/ items to change your lifestyle. They have molds for heart shaped sushi rolls, onigiri, and cute bowls and jars. There is a section on grooming/accessories/cleaning/cooking/stationary.... need I go on? It is fun to just peruse the aisles. This particular location is in the basement; we walked around in circles before we were able to locate it. Once you walk inside it is like a wonder of products waiting to be discovered. This chain is basically a 100 YEN store, similar concept to a 99 cents store. However, unlike most 99 cents stores, the product quality is better (with the exception of Dollar tree which does sell some brand name products). I highly recommend going to a location and checking it out.

We visited New Town Plaza quite often during our trip as we were staying nearby. Yata was…read moredefinitely one of my favorite department stores to browse in especially the supermarket floor. They have a huge selection of Japanese snacks, drinks and dried goods. My favorite was especially the sushi selection, which featured rows upon rows of fresh sushi for an affordable price. They also have a huge prepared foods section featuring local specialties. Above the supermarket floor, they've got clothes, stationery, luggage, baby and kids' department, as well as counters for some leading cosmetic brands. I stopped by the Laniege counter (Korean brand) and bought myself a set of their famous water sleeping pack. Two full size bottles for about $50 USD plus they threw in a 10+ samples plus a set of trial sizes of their famous Water Bank line. It was a pretty good deal that I knew I wouldn't get anywhere else even at cosmetic giants like Sasa and Bonjour. At one of their clothing stalls, they were selling cheap clothes from a local label called Jungle Black. I like that they still support local artists and designers in such a way--they may not have their own counter within the store but they have a stall and it was placed near the escalators and registers. Most tops from that label were under $20 USD and they were mostly one-size. The ladies working at that stall were super friendly and helpful, so I ended up blowing some big bucks here.

People, people and more people. That sums up Yata for you…read more Its spread over 2 levels at Phase 3 of New Town Plaza- at one point one of the biggest shopping malls in Asia. Yata is a Japanese backed shopping mall and this shows through the way the store is decorated and the goods they sell- everything just seems to be nicer here. You will find major brand names here with each brand taking a little section individually and cosmetics which takes up almost half of one floor. For me though, its the huge array of baby items on offer and the supermarket which interests me. The baby section is convenient in the sense it sells everything from prams to canned baby food. whenever I get into difficulties in locating something I will find it here. As I have said before, baby items are something as foreign as Mars to me hence this really helps me in getting the stuff I need. The supermarket is lovely- it offers fresh meat, seafood and even cooked food which makes it a one stop shop for anyone looking to hold a BBQ or hotpot at home which I do a lot. Its not the cheapest but the quality is a cut above other hence I think it deserves the premium.

Love the Supermarket in the basement level. Price might be a little more than getting from other grocery store but the selection here is good and everything so clean! You can find Imports from Japan: Fruits, Seafood, Kobe Beef, you can find here! Plus great place to pick up some cooked food too! They even have Durian from Thailand when it is in season! My kind of grocery store! Free delivery with minimum purchase.

All you need to know about Aeon is their Supermarket - Food Hall!…read more You will find groceries imported from all the prefectures of Japan. Everything under one roof! That's how awesome it is! Aside from Japanese items, you can also shop all the produces from around the World! How about some D24 durian?! They even have LIVE Australian Lobsters available. Mind Blown! You might not able to find some special European import truffle or balsamic oil but I am just happy to shop here everyday! The other floor has more household products which I found them A-OK but did not wow me. For more selection, I suggest going to CSB or other bigger shopping centres. The new Japanese skin care selection on the 2nd floor though quite promising!

Probably best avoided on special 'festival' days (special shopping days for cardholders), but hard to know what those are until you rock up - and then can't move without jostling someone! The crush usually isn't so bad on the upper floors, ie away from the actual supermarket, so if you do get caught - my advice is 'in, up, out' as quickly as feasible.

This is a huge, historic, and iconic department store that has been in the heart of Kowloon's now…read moreolder shopping district for decades (since 1959 to be exact). It is located very prominently at the intersection of Jordan Road and Kowloon's main commercial artery Nathan Road. Back in 1995, when I lived in Hong Kong for 4 months on a work assignment, this was one of the stores I would occasionally putz around in. And now in 2024, 29 years later, it is virtually the same and it's like having walked through a time warp. It's like the old-fashioned flagship version of Macy's of Hong Kong and a store full of traditional Chinese goods and products, and some of them exotic. What struck me the most, and I recall the same sentiment back in 1995, was the number of staffers they have. It seems there are more of them than customers, and there are a lot of customers in this 5 story (plus fully stocked basement) store! Some practices are still antiquated. For example, the sister-in-law wanted to buy some dry goods in the basement, and there was an advertised 20% off promotion. To get the promotion, she had to go up to a clerk on the 5th floor to get her receipt hand-stamped. Then she returned to the basement to complete the transaction. It all took maybe 20 minutes, but it did allow us to use their interestingly tiny and slow elevator. As a tourist, it's worth a walk-through just to say you've seen the store and the surrounding historic Nathan Road shopping area.

To combat the heat at night, I cherished the cotton weave breathable blankets that you could only buy in Hong Kong. When I got older, I tried finding one in the states (specifically, NYC Chinatown), but to no avail. So, I would ask my Uncle to help me get one whenever he went back for a visit. Well, this store, Yue Hwa, still has these special blankets for sale. Even though I have 3 of them, I just couldn't help buy another. This store is huge, and I haven't had the time to really browse properly, but I really like what I've seen so far. You can really find some traditional things here, but it can be on the expensive side.
