If you need knitting help, you need to call ahead. Apparently, Friday is the only day that experienced knitters are in the shop.

From the moment I walked inside I felt welcomed by the the staff and ambiance! I have been back a couple of times when in town. I still feel the same way. Even the little dachshund says hello. The TLC you get from the staff as they assist you is just a part of this venues charm. They even find you a reduced product if possible that fits your searching needs. Who does this anymore? Unwound is hands-down my favorite yarn shop - they have a great selection of yarns at every price point and in every fiber combination. It's such a relief to know that I can find delicate handwash wool, alpaca, and even possum blends for my own personal "keeper" projects and nettle, bamboo, and cotton blends for projects I knit for my sisters - one of whom has a sensitivity to animal fibers and the other who is a vegan and won't wear any animal products! The staff is invaluable in helping me navigate all the options, as well, and determine which yarn will be best for which project. I'm so grateful for their unfailing patience as they work with me in picking yarns, colors, and color combinations, even when I change my mind a dozen times and take two hours to decide. Love this shop and love the owner and staff, they're so kind! Edited to add: Last time I was in the shop I asked about Miss Lizabeth, the shop's resident mini-dachshund, since she seems to be so much calmer these days - come to find out, the owner has taken her to multiple obedience classes and even gotten her therapy certified and CGC certified! I love it when shops listen to their customers and take steps to make things better. read more

Any fiber enthusiast should visit Unwound in Blowing Rock. They have one of the best selections of yarns and notions in the area. Visitors are always welcome to pull up a chair, knit, visit and have a cuppa. Husbands are welcome and "husband chairs" are all around the shop. I love this store! As an added bonus it's situated in one of the prettiest towns in North Carolina. read more

I travel a LOT and find yarn shops wherever I go. Unwound is far and above, my absolute favorite. The selection is enormous (fiber, color, weight and price) and meticulously organized, high quality needle sets, every notion known to man, project and knitting bags, yarn bowls, etc. and the selection turns over frequently - not the same yarn you saw 2 years ago, here. Lots of beautiful finished pieces on display/for sale for ideas and to see how the yarns "knit up." Owner Colleen and her staff, Linda and Shelley, are incredibly welcoming and helpful. Colleen spent at least an hour "translating" a pattern I didn't understand into a format I could follow. Try to find that kind of help elsewhere. I found the guard dog (maybe weighs 6 lbs?) adorable and affectionate. She slept in my lap while my dog slept at my feet. Linda's dog is also a sweetheart who's often at the shop. Don't miss the open knitting afternoons. Really nice group of regulars settle in for a few hours of knitting and visiting. What could be better! read more

Unwound is a great local yarn store - they have a large and varied inventory of yarns, great customer service, and their very own "welcome weenie" (Lizabeth the dachshund). They also have a spacious area for customers to come in and knit or get help with a project and a lovely porch for sitting and enjoying "people watching" in the quaint town of Blowing Rock. I have shopped at Unwound for years and enjoyed the fantastic help and other wonderful customers. And what is not to like about Blowing Rock. Sadly the shop ownership changes in 2015. The owner cares more for her obnoxious dog than her customers and the yarn shop itself. I got in the habit of calling ahead to see if the dog was there before I came to the shop. The owners conversations were often "crude" and "rude." Now it appears that their most knowledgeable and friendly employee, Mary, is no longer there. What a shame! I doubt I will be spending much time or money at Unwound in the future. read more

Fiber Jewel in the Mountains!!!! If you are a FIBER lover...a stop at Unwound will be worth your while..They have a GREAT selection of yarn in all price ranges. What a treasure! The staff is friendly and the prices are affordable. Such a great selection for every budget. The shop is spacious and they told me they have knit-togethers several times per week. I wish I lived closer. I would make this my local yarn shop. read more

Very good yarn shop. They have a broad selection of beautiful yarns...including some fine silks and specialty yarns. They carry some books and patterns, knitting needles and crochet supplies. They seem to have small amounts ( 3 skeins mostly) of each type and color way so you can find yarn for small projects like a pair of socks or a child's sweater but you might not have any luck buying yarn for an adult sweater. The majority of the time I have visited this shop, they have had on hand what I have been looking for! The staff is helpful. They even have chairs for a bored spouse to sit and wait while you explore your options. read more

This shop is one of the main attractions for me in Blowing Rock, and I head there as soon as I unpack. It has changed ownership this past year, but Mary is still there and she has always been my favorite salesperson. I met the new owner, Colleen, and she was very friendly. She seems to have great ideas and they are planning a knitting weekend this summer. All of the yarn I have bought there is very high quality. They are willing to help you and they have a great location with a truly comfy place to sit and knit a while. I rarely get there for the special sales, but I wish I could. It is one of my favorite yarn stores. Set aside some time to really look and you will feel the same. read more

This is gem of a place. They have an amazing inventory, with some of the most beautiful yarns. I have not appreciated the same issues the previous reviewer had. In fact I felt they had an abundance of supplies, even in the reduced section I have visited this shop in Boone yearly for the last 5yrs and always come home with a new project. Last week we were in Banner Elk to see the leaves change , and HAD to stop by. My mother in law, who can no longer knit, saw an afghan that she had to have. So, I volunteered to make it for her. The staff was so helpful as they always have been each time I have visited. Even when I was just learning to knit, they encouraged me to push myself. Once they actually had a knitting group there knitting together. What a sense of community! I cant say enough good things about this place. Living in Jacksonville, FL, our options are pretty limited to Michaels and Joann's; so to visit this store and see the amazing colors and touch all of the different types of yarn, well for us knitters, its pure heaven. Thank you Unwound for keeping the faith and staying the course and keeping the doors open! Looking forward to next year's project! read more
