At the beginning of the school year, my grandmother passed away, and during that horrible time I asked for support to help keep my son on track with his assignments. I was told to rely on his communication notebook, but felt that wasn't enough given the circumstances. Near the end of the final trimester, I was informed that my son was at risk of failing math. I was frustrated because this was the first time I had been made aware that he was struggling. I was told there had not been any concerns before then and that he should begin attending student hours. Earlier communication (in addition to seeing some poor grades in cj which only suggested that we implement new study habits) would have allowed us to address the issue before it became so serious. Parent teacher conferences were unhelpful. Unfortunately, attending student hours was also challenging. If a student arrives even a FEW minutes late, they are not permitted to join because it would "disrupt" the ongoing session. The morning drop-off procedures can be difficult to navigate, as the gates are opened on a very strict schedule. On one occasion, I had to park and walk my son into school before 7:30 a.m., and by the time we reached student hours we were only a couple of minutes late. He was not allowed to attend. Ironically, had it been 7:31 a.m., I could have used the drive-through drop-off instead but would have been late to student hours. There were also several school policies that made the experience more difficult for our family. Students were not allowed to play tag on the playground, school lunches were not provided, and the after-school program was very costly even with scholarship.

The school strongly emphasizes academics and kids are given letter/percentage grades like high schools do. Yes there's pressure but nothing we can't handle so far. My complaints: 1. De-prioritization of physical activity. You have to put your child in an after school club (more money) for dance, bowling, and other movement-based activities. I had the opportunity to volunteer to help with hot lunch once. I learned a lot. Like just how short lunch is; it explained why my daughter was hungry but had uneaten food in her lunch last semester. Volunteering has opened my eyes and I started packing her lunches a little differently 2. It's a charter school so they have to raise money. However, the fundraiser updates in the app are ridiculous. Class vs class, grade vs grade. Everyone hurry and donate before the deadline...use the AZ tax credit...oh the deadline has been extended so you can donate more (no surprise) None of the issues I mentioned are major to me. Why? Because my kindergartener is reading, can read digital and analog clocks, she can add double-digit numbers, etc but her friends who are in 1st and 2nd grade in TUSD schools aren't there yet. The academic advantage Basis provides is unparalleled without attending an expensive private school But there are pros and cons to each school and I've included a couple for potential parents considering the school

I also wanted to mention I posted a review previously here when my daughter was still going here and just mentioning a "few small complaints but over all that I loved this place." And 3 stars. It was followed by the Risa in the front office calling me and screaming at me for about 20 minutes. Followed by nagging from other staff to take the review down. Also my complaint was about like basically all my child's teachers leaving. Obviously left a bad taste in my mouth. And the fact that my name isn't even on here and neither is my child's. The call was a bit surprising. But also eye opening.

The question was not couched in any language to describe that this president was known for his drunkenness or being a terrible president. The quote was not listed on the study guide as need to know material for students. And yet, it was on the test along with several other questionably framed topics regarding slavery and civil war. These types of questions are damaging to children who are already bullied for being different in some ways from the white men who hold privilege/power in our country. The new principal is harsh and unforgiving. She has no qualms about threatening parents with crimes for stopping to talk to teachers before or after school while at the same time telling parents to stop emailing all the time. How are parents supposed to advocate for their children if they cannot stop to talk to the teachers or email them? Her solution is to let kids sink and fail repeatedly while being bullied by teachers and students daily. Is it appropriate for a teacher to ask a student to turn off the light for class and when they get up to do so, say "you need the exercise" followed by laughter of all the middle school classmates. This happens at Cyril (a male teacher in junior high commenting on a female child's need for exercise). Is it appropriate for a teacher (whom the student told before class they forgot their contacts and weren't seeing the board well) to then ask that student to read the board and answer the question from their seat? And then when the student responds I can't see it well today, for the teacher to respond, I bet you can't to the laughter of all the other students? Is it appropriate for a school to make an accommodation plan for a student and then choose not to follow it repeatedly despite parent documentation of the lapses? Why even make a plan if you are going to shame the child for needing it? Is it ok for teachers to stop parents anytime or anywhere on campus for an impromptu meeting including in hallways to discuss private matters like mental health, grades, or quality of notes BUT have a policy that parents cannot stop and talk to teachers about the same things? Is it appropriate for a school to ban parents and students from speaking their native languages like Spanish on campus? What about when their child is hurt or injured and the parent is trying to comfort them? The parents are scolded, "English please", by this new principal. This school has had multiple leadership changes over the last few years. We were family here for 8 years and have finally realized that they don't really care about you or your kids. They care about control and compliance. They don't really care about diversity. They care about kids sitting down and shutting up while they are fed bullying alongside questionable teaching practices such as shaming and yelling at kids. Your money (or state funds from ESA) supports old and outdated teaching that leads to bullying at this school and in the future workplace. It's sad to see such kind families be taken advantage of and bullied into silence and submission. My children were frequent honor roll students and still had issues, how will your students fare here?

She also lied to a lot of us. A few months ago she verbally promised us that our children had a guaranteed spot only to back peddle and say that was not the case. And not to mention, she had zero data to back up her malicious, false claims! You clearly have an integrity issue here. I have heard stories of the staff bullying families and again, I was open to giving this school another chance because the administration had changed. Apparently old, ugly spirited, and gross standards remain. What part of how you treat people is Godlike in your Catholic school? Why do you place unqualified people in positions where they abuse their unqualified power? I am so grateful that this all happened so I didn't waste my money and or tax credits on your school. Academically, many classes seem to be falling behind, and there are growing concerns from parents about the quality of education students are receiving. More importantly, many students no longer feel safe or supported at school, which is extremely concerning for families who trust the school with their children every day. Another issue that has become very noticeable is favoritism. Many parents and even staff members have expressed frustration about unequal treatment and the lack of consistency when addressing concerns. I have personally spoken with several staff members and parents who say they have repeatedly tried to resolve issues, but their concerns are often dismissed. Many describe Ms. Chartier as rude, unprofessional, and difficult to communicate with. It is especially upsetting to see front office staff having to apologize to parents and students because of the way situations are handled. No staff member should feel responsible for smoothing over embarrassing or negative interactions caused by school leadership. Overall, it is heartbreaking to see such a decline in the school environment compared to how things were under Mr. Ewald's leadership. In fifth grade you get to run a school store every lunch, lead assemblies, go on two amazing trips where you travel with your teachers, and so much more! You also have a graduation ceremony that is truly memorable. The principal is so kind. She and the teachers help organize super fun school events that bring the school closer together! Castlehill is definitely amazing! I would recommend it to anyone looking for a community that supports each other and puts children first!

Leman Academy Central only gets 1 star because I can't give less. If I was rating on academics only…read moreI would have given 5 stars; however, this particular campus has a severe bullying issue that they DO NOT handle. The bully is allowed to continue without consequences and the victims are left to feel unsafe and some students have been removed by parents because of it. The school policies state that bullying is not tollerated; however, Central refuses to take corrective action and protects those doing the bullying over the victims. This leaves me to think that the bullies are related to some staff OR the campus just simply doesn't care. The victim is left feeling unsafe in an environment that should be and it leaves the bully not having any consequences to learn that this violent behavior is dangerous. The stance Central is taking is only serving the purpose of grooming future violence we see all to many times on the news. If you want your child to attend Leman Academy of Excellence choose another campus but stay far away from Central for your child's sake.
