Amazing school, I put all 3 of my children through this school and am so thankful for the foundation they have.

In Balance Ranch Academy

In Balance Ranch Academy

There is no residential treatment facility that is "perfect". You can go to any site and find…read morenegative reviews. You need to dig deep and look beyond and figure out the best placement for your child. We did that and are beyond grateful for the Barrasso's and In Balance Academy. Our son thrived there! We were told 12-14 months and he was there a total of 13 months. He had a few setbacks (some poor decisions, i.e. a shoving/shouting incident and intentional rule-breaking) which kept him there for a few additional weeks. He loved the food and the cook, who took the boys who were interested in the kitchen and taught them to cook! In Balance physically cannot accommodate more than 50 students and the most that were ever there was 48. (Because the Barrasso's are committed to getting kids healthy and not just in it for the money, they always tried to have a few beds open for emergency placement. Also, re: how they are just in it for the money, we are still paying for our bill 5 years later. Jobs have come and gone and NEVER ONCE have we gotten a call or a letter requesting payment for what we still owe. We have whittled our debt down but they couldn't have been more understanding.) My son excelled in the school program and was accepted to the college of his choice and the program of his dreams! To keep this review objective, I will tell you that he also entered the TL program and did, indeed, take up smoking (which I abhor). After spending 13 months in a program with lots of supervision, the In Balance TL program (transitional living) gives the boys opportunities to make their own decisions since they are learning to live on their own. Just as your kid may go off to college or move out on their own after high school, the opportunity to "sow your wild oats" will arise. In the case of TL, smoking is one of those "oats". They are drug-tested regularly, have continued (but less) scheduled therapy, work or attend school in the area and make their own meals. As a parent, it is difficult to see some of the choices your kid makes (mine smoked and got a tattoo....another thing I hate!) but they were his choices. It has been a few years since he has been completely independent and he has quit smoking and regrets his tattoos. His lessons, not mine. Again, whatever program you may be researching, you will find pros and cons. Chances are, whatever program you pick will have great things to offer your kid. It's up to him/her to engage and stay motivated and committed to THEIR OWN recovery. We found In Balance the perfect place for our son to learn the tools to overcome his addiction, the loving support to work through his issues, the guiding support given to us as parents to work alongside him and own up to our role in the problems, and the continued growth we experience years later in growing closer as a family. We are forever indebted to Patrick, Betsy and the In Balance family.

Sending my son to In Balance Ranch is the single largest regret of my life. He has PTSD from his…read moreexperience there.

So far so good. Our kinder experience at Basis Tucson Primary has been a lot better than our prek…read moreexperience at Leman Academy. The school strongly emphasizes academics and kids are given letter/percentage grades like high schools do. Yes there's pressure but nothing we can't handle so far. My complaints: 1. De-prioritization of physical activity. You have to put your child in an after school club (more money) for dance, bowling, and other movement-based activities. I had the opportunity to volunteer to help with hot lunch once. I learned a lot. Like just how short lunch is; it explained why my daughter was hungry but had uneaten food in her lunch last semester. Volunteering has opened my eyes and I started packing her lunches a little differently 2. It's a charter school so they have to raise money. However, the fundraiser updates in the app are ridiculous. Class vs class, grade vs grade. Everyone hurry and donate before the deadline...use the AZ tax credit...oh the deadline has been extended so you can donate more (no surprise) None of the issues I mentioned are major to me. Why? Because my kindergartener is reading, can read digital and analog clocks, she can add double-digit numbers, etc but her friends who are in 1st and 2nd grade in TUSD schools aren't there yet. The academic advantage Basis provides is unparalleled without attending an expensive private school But there are pros and cons to each school and I've included a couple for potential parents considering the school

At the beginning of the school year, my grandmother passed away, and during that horrible time I asked for support to help keep my son on track with his assignments. I was told to rely on his communication notebook, but felt that wasn't enough given the circumstances. Near the end of the final trimester, I was informed that my son was at risk of failing math. I was frustrated because this was the first time I had been made aware that he was struggling. I was told there had not been any concerns before then and that he should begin attending student hours. Earlier communication (in addition to seeing some poor grades in cj which only suggested that we implement new study habits) would have allowed us to address the issue before it became so serious. Parent teacher conferences were unhelpful. Unfortunately, attending student hours was also challenging. If a student arrives even a FEW minutes late, they are not permitted to join because it would "disrupt" the ongoing session. The morning drop-off procedures can be difficult to navigate, as the gates are opened on a very strict schedule. On one occasion, I had to park and walk my son into school before 7:30 a.m., and by the time we reached student hours we were only a couple of minutes late. He was not allowed to attend. Ironically, had it been 7:31 a.m., I could have used the drive-through drop-off instead but would have been late to student hours. There were also several school policies that made the experience more difficult for our family. Students were not allowed to play tag on the playground, school lunches were not provided, and the after-school program was very costly even with scholarship.

Our teacher (Carina) attended kids' birthday parties on the weekends for HOURS just because she loved seeing the kids. Amazing. Our other teacher (Rylee) was also fabulous. She was studying to enter medical school. So much hugging and comforting, so wonderful. - Long hours: 7am-6pm - Take all ages of kids, from 6 weeks to 6 years. If you have more than one kid, this is a lifesaver. - Administrators want to make parents' lives easier, and man, it makes a difference. Examples: * Accept credit cards and have an autopay option * Each month they email you a receipt, making it easy to file your FSA claims online without having to collect and scan a bunch of paperwork * Key fob entrance so you're don't have to struggle with a door code or key while holding children * Lightning fast response to email inquiries even after hours * Phone answering machine tells you the extension to call your kids' classroom directly * School provides snacks so you don't have to drop off like eighteen different containers of food each day. Your only responsibility is lunch. * Very few requests or demands of parents generally Cons: - Price. They are pricey. However, you do get what you pay for here. - I would like to see them go with organic, whole-food snacks and all-natural, phthalate-free cleaning products. - I would love more pets, plants or other natural items at the school - It would be nice to have a larger playground and more outdoor time. Sometimes the outdoor time seemed limited. And they certainly have the space in their massive parking lot to substantially expand the playground. They could have a playground to rival the one at Second Street School. All in all, doing a fantastic job!
