I wish there was perfection but there isnt. One thing I can tell you about Universal Technical Institute is this: In Austin, our #1 goal is to change lives for the best. To help our students prepare for life, prepare for careers and have a plan for their future. In our welding program we have over 150 years of combined experience. Our HVACR instructors are running close to that and our Auto and DIesel instructors run way above that. While some students may have some challenges with some instructors, thats understandable and never an excuse to have some attitude disparities, remember in life, you will deal with that, you will have co-workers and bosses that you will not get along with. With that said, I am very proud of our Austin team... we have changed many lives, and many many more to go. Current student at UTI. Collegiate Housing scammed funds paid to for them substandard living quarters.  Not only are they taking my money, but they are also saying that we are not entitled to any housing assistance.  I am incredibly frustrated with these accommodations. CHS has the WRONG move-in date (9th instead of 10th) again, charging us more!  Essentially, I paid close to $800 for what amounts to 9 days! I want my money back!! This situation is unacceptable!  We made it clear to CHS that at my son does NOT have transportation! Please correct this situation!  Neither Andrew nor I went to Houston only to be taken advantage of. I am very disappointed in this entire program. read more

I applied to be an instructor, the "recruiter" went through my life piece by piece and "explained" why my entire life was a series of poor choices and I needed to take personal responsibility for why I left every job, never mind that some of my leaving was due to layoffs or shop closures/restructuring. I was also told that I had to take personal responsibility for employers refusing to let me become ASE certified. The "recruiter" also advised me on how to commit tax fraud. I even called the HQ and emailed with a complaint asking for an email or phone call to discus this. No response. This company is only out for your money, the education you get is worthless as nearly EVERY manufacturer REQUIRES factory certification now. ASE certs are NOT a requirement and are subject to IF your service manager/service foreman CHOOSES to send you and vouch for the work. you are better off saving 50k and asking your local dealer or shop if they will hire you to change oil and such to start out. All the reviews about how good they are and how they strive to change peoples lives is false. After 34 years in the industry I can train anyone in 2 weeks to be a fast lube guy, which is where you WILL start no matter what the patch says on your arm. read more

I'm not going to write an entire book about the location here in Houston. What I will say is, 3 months in and I feel like once I take the EPA I'm going to fail. The way the teaching is going is questionable. Quite frankly, besides the certs they give at the end, you can look and learn everything you need from YouTube. With the exception of maybe 1 instructor, unprofessional, grown children reading from a screen/book making side jokes about things that shouldn't be discussed in class. I thought coming here I would feel welcomed and appreciated being that you are getting my money. However, they allow pretty much anyone in these classes. They say anything in these classes. They do what they want and expect everyone to learn at the same pace. And if you dont, oh well. Guess you're just too dumb to attend this school. I reached out to Financial Aid and Student services about 3 weeks into my classes about withdrawing and what the process is. I received no response, no email , no call. But every month they make sure to send me notifications about my payments. People with learning disabilities are not welcomed here as well. They joke around class and the instructors do absolutely nothing about it until it causes a major issue or act as if they didn't see or hear it. I wish I could just start over with a different experience who takes the HVACR business seriously and actually care about their students and hold them accountable. read more

DONT NO COME HERE FOR AVIATION. Nobody knows what's going on with the lessons. Wrong answers on most of our quizzes. Wrong information in every class so far. Financial aid is a scam. Money always going missing. Nobody knows why. Barely get any hands on experience. But they expect us to know how to take a practical test with no practical experience. When I attended UTI, the school's reputation for producing technicians wasn't the best. In my experience, San Jacinto offered a stronger program, it was less expensive and It was brand-specific, and the credits you earned could be transferred to an accredited college if you decided to switch career paths. read more

DO NOT COME HERE FOR ROBOTICS!! PLEASE FIND SOMEWHERE ELSE! I took the school because their robotics program seemed great, and they managed to sweet talk their way into getting me to sign up for it. But once you get into those classes, you will learn nothing about what you signed up for. You get high-school level math and lessons about tools and regulations so generic a Google search could be more helpful to you. I couldn't find a way to leave a public review about the Austin campus, so I'm sharing here. I graduated & As a girl trying to get into working on Cat Equip. , I was initially excited about the program. my experience took a turn when I had McDonald's class. His behavior was disgusting he talked about bad about girls in the industry and stated, "They can never do what men do." He also shared inappropriate details about his ex-wife and talked racist and sexist remarks almost every day. He wasnt trying to be funny, they were very direct remarks & the class made remarks about how creepy he was Whenever a student who wasn't white arrived late, he would make derogatory comments like, "You look like the type to have been selling drugs; that must be why you're late." His offensive remarks about his ex-wife and included disturbing comments about pedophilia. I was shocked that high school tours were allowed in the same room. a student was wearing a pink shirt and he said to him "i dont like people who are gay, can you get a new shirt" If it hadn't been for the support from other diesel instructors, who helped me see a path to success and when i doubted if i would make it, they backed me and gave me numbers of who to call at companies without them I would have likely dropped out and considered legal action against Old McDonald, aka the PIG. read more

If you want to learn about cars and have zero experience, this is the place to go. It was a lot of information and I did get overwhelmed at times but I do not regret going. The instructors were excellent and knowledgeable and were amazing at explaining thing to the most knowledgeable person or to someone with zero experience. I loved learning how to take apart a manual transmission and putting it back together and..it worked. Same with an engine rebuild. If you think you know everything about cars already then don't go. If you want to actually learn about cars or learn more, this is a place for you. I have always wanted to learn about cars but grew up in a family of health care professionals and in a time when women were not involved in mechanics. I did not feel out of place at UTI. The staff we're great and my fellow students were cool as hell! Through UTI, I applied to and was accept the Mercedes Benz program, one of the best days of my life when the Mercedes recruiter called and said "Welcome to Mercedes Benz". This was all because of my start with UTI. read more

As a girl, being in class with McDonald was very uncomfortable. He frequently made awkward remarks about personal topics, such as his "but plug", and would yell about his ex-wife, creating a tense awkward feel. His behavior was unsettling and made me feel uneasy. I talked about this to other students and they all knew about it and said that he makes weird gestures towards females. he came across as somewhat unsettling and gave off negative Epstein vibes. What upset me most was how he said he "hates gay people" I ended up not coming back to class, not sure if I will. I went to the Austin campus. I feel defeated read more

Wished we had done some better research on the housing program this school offers, WHAT A SCAM THEY ARE! During COVID our son was forced to move units and charged fees to do so due to the schools need to move not ours! He was also charged cleaning fees for his roommates trash and lack of cleaning when he was assigned to the roommates. At one time there was a 5th person living in the other bedrooms closet who was not even part of the units lease or people allow to live there. They dont mail out final bills they email them and then turn your acct over to collections poor poor business practice! We would never recommend anyone rent through them! read more

Even the administrative and admissions team is a joke. I'm DIY-ing the diagnostics on my Mercedes Benz PCM issues and realized that I'm really enjoying myself, so I looked into some automotive programs online. Reached out to UTI for information. Spoke to an admissions counselor and let him know I was interested in the MB program. He let me know I would have to go through the core program before the MB specific program, which was fine with me. However, he didn't ask me if I had any questions about the program, or ask me anything about my interest in the program, he went directly into asking me if I was ready to sign up. When I told him I wanted to keep looking around at what other programs had to offer, he became manipulative and tried to fear bate me into the UTI program by telling me that it was the only one available. I was on the MB International website looking at the 4 colleges that offer MB Technician training, and UTI isn't even listed as one of the colleges. They are just a partner program, not a program directly offered by MB. When I told him that UTI wasn't the only program, he became verbally aggressive, so I hung up the phone in his face. So then, I called the corporate office to file a complaint about the way I was treated as a potential student. The woman who is responsible for the admissions department is the one I spoke to, and she made all kinds of excuses for the guy, saying how "we all make mistakes." I told her that I guarantee that this isn't the first time he tried to fear bate someone into coming to your program. She continued to make excuses for him, though, saying that if she doesn't know then she can't offer him the "coaching" he needs. He sounded like a fully adult male, if he needs to be coached on how to communicate with people, then maybe he shouldn't be in admissions. Anyway, I told the woman about the Yelp reviews from other students and how the experience with all of the administration seems to be negative. She tried to discredit the Yelp reviews saying something about how the people who leave reviews on Yelp also review taco stands.. like what does that have to do with anything? Then she said "if you want better reviews, go to the manufacturers websites." I'm a potential student, so I want reviews from the student's point of view, not the manufacturer's point of view! She continued on and on making excuses for their poor recruitment tactics, so I told her that even if I was 100% interested in UTI, I definitely wasn't going to attend now because of the tactics they use. She then went on about how saying "the tactics you all use.." is a broad term... like YES... YOU ALL, as in your institution. Aren't you apart of it?! I hung up the phone in her face too. From all the reviews here from people who have attended UTI and my experience with just trying to get information on the program, it honestly seems like this school is not a very good place to learn. It seems like they are another ITT Technical Institute, promising success and charging you $40k+ for failure. read more

For the incredibly high price of this school, I expected so much more. I graduated in 2004 thru the Auto/Diesel/Industrial program. This school is setup, in my opinion, to make someone who knows NOTHING about cars a basic oil/lube tech. Many of the classes are setup so basic, and so generic that its impossible to actually gain any real world knowledge. incredibly basic electrical troubleshooting, basic overview of suspension/engine/brake components, a very broad spectrum of AC systems, OBD scan tools. All this for the cost of a full multi year tuition at a real college that would get you a actual degree. The TV commercials and propaganda make this school seem like it will be awesome, and it will forge you into a total auto-technician. But in reality you will be lucky if you can end up being a glorified lube and alignment tech at a Firestone, or Goodyear. It has been one of the worst decisions of my life. I would GLADLY turn in the completion certificate *diploma* for a refund. read more

This office is notorious for VA military pay mistakes. My husband is a full time student, and works full time and for the last 3 months UTI Houston office has dropped the ball on his VA benefits. They expect you to attend class with an expected GPA but they can't take care of the student. I had become a stressful situation with the run around and no support. Ok let's start by saying something real adults already know. "You only get out of it what you put into it" , bottom line plain and simple. I attended UTI Houston Campus Nov 2020-Dec 2021. I am a grown man age 47, 15 year Navy Veteran. I have been working on vehicles, heavy equipment and 18 wheelers for 20 plus years. With said I already had a lot of knowledge. What I didn't have was computer diagnostic software experience. Although it was " Covid Pandemic" time frame and did require lots of watching videos and "SELF DISCIPLINE " to complete. I saw and heard the majority of youth complain and confess over and over about cheating the system and not actually doing so. They just open many windows and play videos on fast speed or just click their way through slides. So who's fault is it they didn't learn, familiarize or retain entry level or any amount of information is it? There were some outstanding young men and women there whom which to took full advantage of the opportunity to learn. I can say I was very impressed with some. Others not so much. They just cheated on labs and complained endlessly. Lab situations were not always ideal due to number of diagnostic computers and students but if you paid attention and got your hands on it you will learn. Overall the school had pretty nice tools, labs and knowledgeable instructors. If you wanted to learn, participated and studied no doubt you can go far. I was especially impressed with the Cummins program instructors and program. Nothing but outstanding! Also the employment placement program is outstanding! I assure you that they work hard to find you work and sell your resume. They also have outstanding job fairs! I was offered noless than a dozen jobs per job fair. I didn't except them but Mr Rojas did not give up and found me a great paying job! I had a few hiccups with VA pay but I simply brought them to the attention of the school VA representative and they were quickly fixed. I called the VA and communicated what the issue was. See I think all the poor reviews are from lazy, irresponsible and poorly motivated students whom are probably entitled and expect the world to be handed to them. So if you are considering UTI don't hesitate. The only thing I thought was a real issue was housing situation could be better. Nobody want to share two bedrooms with 4 strangers. I guess it bests being homeless. Maybe that situation would be improved if they would be courteous and not selfish also. In the navy we has 244 men in the same room. Practically zero issue because they knew what selfish behavior got them. The proper attitude will get you far there I promise. Could some things be better sure, but ask the same of yourself. I went to Urinary Tract Infection back in 2012-2013. This place is a joke. At first I thought it was great! I thought I was learning some complicated stuff that would take years in the field to learn. I was completely wrong!!!!!! Should've saved my money. In one month I learned 100 times more than I learned through my entire program of being there. I graduated with lots of student debt that was completely pointless. The only plus is that most places pay you more starting out with that certificate in your hand. Any shop you work in will laugh at the mention of UTI. Don't do it! I told my younger cousin not to. I like to think everything happens for a reason but I'm definitely pissed about coming to this school, I don't know how to tell my mom she got 40k in debt to send me to some "school" that's completely a joke. For all the idiots who say UTI is a bad school and that it won't do you any good, don't listen to them. I went there not knowing much straight from high school but always dreamed of working on cars. Here they teach you so much, the instructors are very knowledgeable and yes they are laid back and chill but they give you their knowledge and stories so that one day you won't make the same mistake they did in the career field. If you're actually interested in learning about cars, the new technology and what it takes to make it then this school will help you. All I have to say is YOU GET WHAT YOU PUT IN. I would see classmates come in and sleep and just be on their phones all day yet complain about how this is a bad school and don't learn shit. I myself did do the work and put in the effort. With that being said I got accepted into a manufacturer paid program. I signed on with the Mercedes Benz Program which is in Dallas Tx. This program is still through UTI but they're paying for my schooling now. In my opinion if you're going to come to this school, make sure you do your best and get into one of the manufacture paid program and continue with one of your choice of manufacturer that you want to be working for. Once done with their training you will go and work for them. And yes obviously you will start from the bottom just like anyone else in any other place or career field but at least with your training and certifications from them, you won't take as long to clim up as someone who has nothing to prove. read more
