Note: This review is for my 6 month experience with the prenatal clinic & birthing (in my case, c-section) floors only. I had a high-risk pregnancy & was here for weekly labs/imaging. It was almost a one hour drive but the care & quality was worth it. The prenatal clinic is very clean, has a large & peaceful waiting room with a garden courtyard & all of the ladies at the front desk have a friendly demeanor. The prenatal radiology team is wonderful, the rooms are well kept & the equipment is the best I've seen. They went above & beyond to send me the regular, 3D images as well as the video footage of my ultrasounds each time that I could upload at home every time. My c-section was preformed & supervised by a very high rated surgeon, experienced calm anesthesiologist, along with the medical student team. It is very important to remember/come in knowing that this is also a learning medical hospital for UW students on their way to becoming doctors themselves who will be part of your surgical team. It isn't something to be alarmed about while they are discussing the progress and confirming things during the operation. This was my first experience with a c-section (or baby) & the surgeon came in the prep room before to discuss things with us, but the best part was a great but respectable sense of humor and personable attitude of him. It created an uplifting atmosphere. Great anesthesiologist who spoke through what he was doing each step. Fantastic nursing team to keep me calm. The surgeon came over with a smile to check in with me every few minutes. My husband had a great experience as well. I didn't get to see our baby girl right away apart from briefly holding her above the curtain but my husband was very involved. They held her on my chest but couldn't hold her until it was complete. I was out of surgery pretty quickly & taken to our room. Very spacious, very clean room with nice bathroom/shower & a wonderful, prompt & personable nursing team throughout the 5 days there. They weren't constantly changing so you built a nice relationship. I recommended one for the Daisy award she was so fantastic with myself & our new baby. Also, really delicious food made to your liking that came up pretty fast. I was eating pancakes quickly after surgery! Great checkout experience showing us how to bathe our little one, use the pumping equipment & get her ready to go. What would I change? Not much. My husband would recommend a more comfortable area to lay down sunce we were there 4 nights. It was pretty cold and there weren't many blankets or comfortable pillows available for him -I brought my own. Very long review, but I wanted to address the whole experience! It was wonderful, from my months of weekly visits, surgery & recovery. Note: my friend has had her five children at each of the hospitals in Madison (as well as Sauk & Reedsburg) and said Meriter was by far the best as well. read more

A family member was transferred from another hospital's ER to Unity Point Health - Meriter, Madison, WI, after we confirmed with their team that we would have opportunities to share pertinent information, communicate with the treating team, and address other ongoing physical medical needs that another physician overseas. Unfortunately, upon their arrival, these assurances were not honored, which negatively impacted care. Specifically: Information Sharing: We were not allowed to share critical medical information upon arrival despite its relevance to treatment and being told to do so by other medical professionals. Communication with the Treating Physician: Despite repeated requests over several days, we were consistently denied access to the treating physician. On Day 1, we requested to speak with the physician and were told they were too busy but might contact us later. This did not happen. On Days 2 and 3, similar requests were met with excuses, delays, and vague assurances. It was not until late on the third day, after pleading, working with the patient advocate for over 24 hours, and expressing the possibility of the patient checking themselves out, that we were granted a brief meeting at the close of business. With a release of information signed, the treating physician refused to contact us, which, in my understanding, is a violation of HIPAA. The lack of communication and transparency severely compromised patient care. As their family, we are responsible for coordinating and supporting their aftercare, and the lack of collaboration from the treating physician undermined this process. With a release of information (ROI) in place, the refusal to engage with us appears not only unprofessional but potentially unethical, immoral and likely illegal. Medical Needs: We were informed that their ongoing medication needs could not be addressed, with the implication that they could "just get by" without them. We believe this behavior falls far short of the very basic standards expected in a healthcare setting. These are only the 'highlights' of the failures. My three year old son split his head open " we could see his skull " we get to urgent care and lobby is empty after about 15 minutes. It fills in with like 10 more people and they literally helped everyone else. Well, my son had a gaping head wound in the lobby. After about an hour of them helping everyone else that got there after us, we were finally able to get some stitches on my kids face. read more

Poor communication between different departments and doctors. Was referred to one only to be told that I didn't need to see him and my primary care physician should have known that, had a 5 minute conversation and that was it. Was made to believe I wasn't going to be charged for it and then received a 234.00 bill. After disputing I never heard back from anyone, called in to see what was up since I received a new bill when I wasn't supposed to until I was contacted and their notes had no resolution, then they froze the account again and said they would look into it and get back to me again, and never did. Then all of a sudden I received a collections notice. In 8 months I never heard back from anyone and all of a sudden it's in collections. Ridiculous. Will be shopping around for a new clinic/hospital in the future. read more

The Worst! I should start with the fact that I hate hospitals and most doctors. I always seem to get the ones who want to try out the newest thing on me, even though I have spent many many years finding a combination that works for me. Recently, I was low energy, achy, shortness of breath and I had a cough so bad that it sometimes causes me to pass out. This made me drag my butt down and get checked out, assuming I had COVID. Turns out my temp is 98.6, the doctor can't hear anything wrong in my lungs and the X-rays came back just fine. They went ahead and tested for COVID and both influenzas A and B but all the tests came up negative. So now, even though I can't stop coughing and still can't breath, I have no idea what the issue is and they just sent me home. Coughing until you loss consciousness is not normal and should be a concern. I always am made to feel like I'm wasting their time no matter what symptoms I'm showing and they never fail to give out Tylenol even if there is no real reason to give it out. read more

If you have any mental issues or have to be accompanied by a service animal do not go to them. They will not allow your service animal in or emotional support animal inside rather it is documented or not. I have a high risk pregnancy and was denied care because I have service animal. Because this is where my insurance is, I will continue my high risk pregnancy without any prenatal care because I require a service animal. read more

Stayed here September of 07'. Twice. WTH?!? Yeah some allergic reaction mixed with something viral; made my throat close up and could barely breathe; nearly passed out. Long story short; the nurses are zero supreme (Number 1) and my private room was bangin'! They actually listened to me when I told them I have "hidden veins" and a butterfly needle would suit me. My beau, parents and daughter all came to visit and also were pleased at my accommodations. God forbid something else unfortunate should happen to me, but if it does, Meriter is my hospital. Fortunately, I have not had many reasons in my life to visit hospitals. However, upon becoming pregnant, I found out that I would be delivering at Meriter Hospital. Being new to the Madison area, I had never been to Meriter before and didn't know what to expect. From my prenatal ultrasounds to my labor induction, to my son's 2 and a half week NICU stay, I was left in complete amazement at the kindness, compassion, patience, and professionalism of the medical staff. Words can barely express how incredibly grateful I am to each and every doctor, nurse, midwife, lactation consultant, and therapist I came across. I honestly have to say that I was always treated with respect and understanding by every medical professional. All procedures and test results regarding my labor and my son's health afterwards were explained carefully and clearly. Not once did I ever feel that mine and my son's health were anything other than top priorities. From the day of my induction to the day my son was discharged from the NICU, I spent 3 straight weeks at Meriter. And I have to say, if you are ever going to be stuck in a hospital for that long, it might as well be with medical professionals who know what they are doing and love doing it. When it comes to the selection of hospital's available in Madison I would rate Meriter the lowest. I say this based on personal experience related to my having two children here. First, I will say that the nursing staff are phenomenal. They are personable and kind and do a wonderful job making the patient feel comfortable and cared for. I have always been happy with the nursing care I have received here. While the nursing care is phenomenal I can't say the same for the doctor's. Many times they are severely lacking in connecting with the patients as humans. Instead we are treated more like numbers or medical conditions. On average the amount of time spent with a doctor is less than a minute twice a day (if you are lucky). Something else severely lacking with this hospital is the parking situation. Meriter is one of two birthing hospital's in Madison. Despite this they can't be bothered to have more than three expectant mother parking spots. In an 8 floor parking garage I more often then not am forced to park on the top floor and walk quite the distance to get to my final destination. Being currently 9 months pregnant this is less than enjoyable. If they can't be bothered to add a few more spots for expectant mothers then I guess it shows where we stand as patients of this hospital. read more

I had all 3 of my babies there and can not say enough about how friendly and helpful all the staff are. I had a mix of difficult and easy birthing experiences and they were with me through it all. They treat you like you have done something wrong. The doctors are not much better the nurses either. Ok - so the security here is non-existant. Anyone can walk in here. It is kind of scary being a lady who is walking in an out during early and late hours. The cafeteria is a pleasant surprise. Food in this area can be inaccessible because of parking. Everything is priced under $5 and made fresh. Most of the stuff is reason and healthy. And it really is not "terrible" hospital food. It is nice to know when I am visiting family I can get a full, health meal for under $4. read more

Maybe I was spoiled with Columbia / St. Mary's hospitals in Milwaukee, but this location took nearly two hours during the early afternoon of a work day. I sat there with a potential blood clot; old SARS victims were hacking away and I could have sworn that an elderly person sat there with cob webs growing on her. Horrible. Having a life threatening illness these ppl didnt listen to a word i said - if you ever have seen charlie brown and remember the teachers voice going wahwah wahwah that is what these drs remind me of - i did not go in seeking pain meds as i do not take them but they treated me like i was a drug seeker and not even remotely did they listen or address any problem that i described to them. I had to go to the ER twice last month and felt dismissed and uninformed both times. It wasn't until I went to visit my primary care provider who requested the records did I actually find out what was going on. As I have a pre existing health issue that could have been seriously compromised by what I was being seen for, things could have gone seriously wrong. I really like this place! My husband had day surgery here and everyone was super nice and the whole place has a nice quiet atmosphere. The communication was top notch throughout the day and there is a frequently updated tv monitor in the family waiting room that you can follow along to see when the patient is in surgery, when the surgery is done, patient is in recovery, when the doctor will talk to you about how the surgery went and when you can see your loved one. It's just like the "arrivals and departures" screens in an airport that keep you updated. You will be given a surgery ID # to look for on the screen. It was so helpful to know when surgery was completed and when I would be able to see him. I highly reccomend Meriter's UnityPoint Health Center! You don't need to register on the main floor just go up to the floor you are told to check in. read more

My sister took me to the ER after I spoke to a nurse. I had a stabbing pain in my chest that lasted more than 16 hours. I was taken right in. Immediately, they started working on me. I had an IV, all the heart monitors, etc. They brought in an X-ray machine, I saw a doctor and then a heart specialist. After and echocardiogram I spoke again to the specialist Dr. Moses. The treatment was so fantastic. No bodies laying in the hallways of the busy ER. People moved quickly, and were very attentive. If anyone in my family needs an ER, it will be Meriter not UW or St. Mary's. read more

BEWARE if you go there asking for help with a mental health issue you will be treated like a criminal. You will be guarded by security and they don't give you a call light (no cords allowed) so God forbid you need to pee. They order you back into the room when you try to get help for such things. Basically everything they can do to take away your dignity they will. I was robbed and assaulted (physically not sexually) 8 yrs ago and i would rather repeat that experience over going to Meriter for help. Add to that they lie to outside treatment team about offering you help when in reality they turn you away telling you they can't help. It was one of the most frustrating and degrading things I have ever experienced. Top off the criminal like treatment with leaving unable to get help and finding a random vial of meditaction in the bucket where they put my belongings ( way to go no help with suicidal thoughts and giving random meds to help them out!! I assume if fell out of a pocket into the bin) it was absolutely the opposite of what should be done and is decades behind what should be happening in 2016. It's been 6 years since the birth of my daughter at Meriter but the experience still bothers me to this day. I was a new mom. The nurses really pushed breastfeeding to the detriment of the infant's health. They kept telling me that the baby is fine, the colostrum is enough. How can a baby that just got out of a wet womb be fine without fluids for 24+ hours? Colostrum is thick like honey. If I gave you a cup of honey with nothing to drink all day how would you feel? That's right, thirsty and dehydrated. That's what happened to my daughter. They make you feel like a bad mom because you want to supplement breastfeeding with formula. The sub pediatrician we had was terrible. He had us coming in every day for checkup for jaundice by eyeballing if she looked more yellow than before. By the end of the week, our regular pediatrician was back, ran labs and admitted my daughter to the NICU for breastfeeding jaundice due to dehydration. It was heartbreaking to see them try several times to put an IV into her tiny little hand (btw NICU nurses in general are so much better than post delivery). Fortunately she made it through. If you are planning to give birth at Meriter, remember that and be an advocate for your baby because the nurses are trained to follow guidelines even if those guidelines later turn out to be harmful. Keep your baby hydrated and don't be afraid to supplement with a bottle until your milk is fully in. My daughter breastfed just fine after she got out of the NICU. Their billing department head build me a co-pay that should've been waived after being admitted into the hospital for treatment and further imaging. Their billing department told me they can hold you in the hospital for a week or more and still be considered outpatient. I asked them for documentation. Their response from the billing department was will just take you to collections and so they did. And when it comes to them sending bills out they are usually 90 days after your visit. Maybe they're waiting to see what is covered by the insurance but to say that I'm 90 days past due when you don't receive a billing until 90 days after is not right. past-due should be considered from the first billing that you receive. We need to stand up against these kinds of companies that don't care especially when they're in the business to give care. read more

This rating is for the ER. I took my 6 month old in for symptoms that concerned me. First off, the nurse seemed unsure of himself and what he was doing. When the doctor came in, she was nonchalant. It was recommended almost immediately that a urine sample be collected through catheter. She asked me if it was ok to do, and being trusting, I said yes. A doctor should know what they're doing, right??? Well I felt so misinformed about how uncomfortable the procedure is. My baby was not just crying but screaming. Something I NEVER want to hear again. I felt helpless but thought I was doing the right thing. I just wanted to find out what was wrong and help her feel better. Hopefully she doesn't develop an infection from the male nurse trying to insert the catheter and having to call a female nurse in. (She was the most compassionate out of anyone I encountered) Later I look up information online and a doctor recommended asking for lidocaine to numb beforehand. Nothing was offered for pain, nor did I know it would be so painful for her. Bottom line is, not every doctor/nurse is there with you or your family members best interest in mind. Not all doctors are good doctors. We left with nothing accomplished but a recommendation of keeping hydrated and making an appt with primary doctor the next day if throwing up continued. The nurses name was JESSI. The doctor was MARIA RUIZ. It is so sad how the sympathy and compassion was lacking. If you're tired, go home. If it's just a paycheck to you, find another job. read more

My husband and I had our first baby at the Meriter Birthing Center with the UW Midwifes who were amazing! Unfortunately, due to lack of care and ability to have similar standards across the board, my daughter was wrongfully put into the NICU. My daughter had been born by vacuume and had slight head bleeding due to this, which is common. Two of the nurses in the NICU measured her head circumference differently, resulting in two different measurements. They claimed she had swelling and was taken to the NICU right away. As new parents, we were very worried and trusted everything they told us. Because I was a patient at the time also, they told me, as her mother, I was not allowed to stay with her overnight. This was just the beginning. Over the next 5 days of our care, the staff not only had awful communication issues but belittled my husband and I. We would ask questions on how our baby was doing and they would either a) ignore us/ tell us they could not give an answer at this time or b) talk over our heads and not explain anything. I had one nurse in particular who called me into the room at 2am because she thought my daughter was hungry. Very excited about this, I had a nurse bring me to her in my wheel chair.( We were trying VERY hard to breastfeed, working with multiple nurses and a lactation consultant on staff. ) Once I was in my daughters room the nurse shut the door and stood over my wheel chair. She looked down at me and said, "you are the worst mother I have ever seen. You are depriving your child because you can not breastfeed..." She then went on to tell me how hard we were making it on the nurses for choosing to cloth diaper, which the nurses changed maybe 5 times at most since either my husband and I were in the room at all times. So taken a back and out of my mind from everything that had happend to me and everything that was happening, I didn't know what to say or do. It was the middle of the night, staff was scarce and my husband was asleep. Wheelchair bound, I couldn't get help. Crying I yelled for my husband to wake up. I told the nurse she was making me super uncomfortable and to back away from me. My husband finally woke and was very upset to say the least. We called for her supervisor and the nurse ADMITTED to saying those things and said a half ass sorry to me. Long story short, we had to have a meeting with all the staff and particular nurses we're no longer allowed in our room. To make a long story short, not all but the majority of the nurses are rude, uncaring and WILL give you a hard time if you question ANYTHING they are doing, are trying to work through breastfeeding/ going a natural route for your child and most importantly, they DO NOT like if you stay in the room with your child. They like when you are out so they can do what they want and have a break. There were more than 10 different times they asked/told us to leave and go find something else to do.....WHY!??i want to be with my daughter who was just born! She's MY baby!!!!! Honestly, the list of horrible things they said and did to us goes on and on and on and on. I'm going to stop here though. My point of writing this is to inform mothers who are planning on having a child through the UW Midwifes (who are excellent) you MUST give birth at Meriter. Please, if you find yourself in a similar situation where your baby has to go to the NICU, do not be afraid to ask questions, ask for different nurses whatever you have to do to protect yourself and your precious baby. Always be on guard. Just because they are nurses who do do wonderful things and save life's, not all of them are equal!!!! Please look out for yourself and your family.
