The marker has the same text on both sides. It reads, "H.L. Dickason, a noted educator from Lindside and the grandson of slaves, graduated from Bluefield Colored Institute in 1910 and The Ohio State University in 1913. He returned to BCI to teach math and as president from 1936 to 1952 led Bluefield State (Teachers) College to full accreditation. Dickason headed Morristown College (TN) from 1953 until his death in 1957." It does not have a number but it was erected in 2015 by the West Virginia Archives & History. There is more information online. Dr. Dickason was the grandson of formerly enslaved people and grew up in a log cabin on Peters Mountain. Under his leadership, Bluefield Colored Institute expanded its curriculum, gained full accreditation, and constructed key facilities, including the Technical Education Building later named Dickason Hall. He served as General President of Alpha Phi Alpha, the first African American Greek-letter fraternity, and was appointed a consultant to the National Youth Administration during the New Deal era. I was so glad to have carved out some time to visit this Historic site. Its two shakes of a lambs…read moretail from the highway. They created a rather large parking area with porta Jon's and about 4-5 grills and picnic tables. Nice little place. Why 4 stars? Not sure who's responsible for maintenance but trash on the ground from disrespectful people but also the grills are so old, they've rusted apart. One is hanging off its post. Otherwise, I enjoyed my visit!

The North House Museum is one of those small, out of the way sites that are worth exploring…read more Operated as part of the Greenbrier Historical Society, it contains many examples of early Virginia furnishings. Yes, you read that right my friends. Don't forget, West Virginia was a part of Virginia until 1863. The North House has six rooms open to the public. My husband Rick and I took the free (although a donation is suggested) guided tour. Being a history teacher, Rick liked the Civil War Room the best. I preferred the Doris Caldwell room. Caldwell was a diorama artist whose pieces were very intricately detailed. Come check this place out if you're on a WV vacation.

We spent the day in Lewisburg and this museum became the highlight of our trip. We took the guided…read moretour and thoroughly loved it. The guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. The other staff we encountered were very helpful. The displays were of the highest quality and full of interesting information about the several eras of Lewisburg and Greenbriar County. Another big plus was the handicap access. We were able to take a wheelchair throughout the museum. This museum put a smile on our faces.

It reads, "The Greenbrier Limestone, which outcrops along U.S. Route 219 between here and Renick, is the "Big Lime" of the driller. Fish-egg like oölitic zones in the "Big Lime" yield oil and natural gas in West Virginia." Onlne, there is more information. Between 345 and 326 million years ago, during the Middle Mississippian Epoch, the geologic formation was deposited. This thick, frequently 400-foot-deep carbonate layer, which stretches throughout West Virginia and portions of Kentucky, Virginia, and Maryland, was created in a shallow marine environment. Because of its porous structure, it is a valuable natural gas and oil reservoir. The Big Lime also contains a large number of karst characteristics, such as sinkholes and caverns. This formation, which gets its name from the Greenbrier River, not only supports industry but also shapes the Appalachian landscape. There is no number on the marker which was erected in 1973 by the West Virginia Historic Commission, sponsored by the West Virginia Centennial Committee of the Oil and Natural Gas Industry. The Civil War was a tragic time in American history and this marker points one one very small event…read morethat took place. West Virginia was a "border" state and there were people here who supported the Union and others who supported the Confederacy. The marker has the same text on both sides. It reads, "In November 1863, David S. Creigh, a well-known southern sympathizer, found a Union soldier ransacking his home and harassing his wife. In the ensuing fight, Creigh killed the man, then hid the body. Later arrested, Creigh was tried and, on June 10, 1864, hanged. His home, Montescena, was to be burned, but it survived the war and was listed on the National Register in 1975." The marker does not have a number.
