Monroe County was established in 1799, carved from Greenbrier County and named after James Monroe, who would later become the fifth U.S. president. Union has been the county seat ever since. The area was originally home to Native American tribes, including the Shawnee, before European settlers arrived in the mid-1700s. The county borders the state of Virginia.
Though West Virginia became a state in 1863 as part of the Civil War, Monroe County did not support secession from Virginia and was included in the new state by Congressional decree, not local vote.
The Monroe County Courthouse faces west and is a two story red colored brick structure, with the bricks sourced locally. The building houses the County Circuit Court of the 31st Judicial Circuit, County Magistrate Court and County Family Court.
