Some have…read morereferred to this as Clover Hollow Covered Bridge, but that name is incorrect as verified by BridgeHunter.com and Virginia's Department of Transportation. Sinking Creek Covered Bridge was built in 1916 using a modified version of the Howe Truss technique invented by William Howe in 1840, which became widely used as a building method in the mid to late 1800's. The bridge is one of only six remaining historic covered bridges in Virginia. I've actually had the pleasure to visit two other Virginia bridges: Meem's Bottom & Humpback which are two of my favorite covered bridges in the United States, Humpback being unique for its arched design. The bridge has a 70 foot span and its approach (the raised area leading to the bridge) is paved with memorial bricks displaying the names of contributors. The lawn around the bridge was nicely manicured and included a picnic table and sitting bench near the opening of the bridge. The chosen color of the bridge is a lovely barn red. The creek itself has an interesting story as just a few miles downstream it tends to disappear underground if water flow is low... like during our visit. A strange and unusual natural phenomenon that gives the creek its name. ENJOY!!! Online, there is more information. The original location is lost now because it was flooded as part of the efforts to bring electricity to the Shenandoah Valley. In 1749 the Moravian missionaries noted that in the region of Dunkards Bottom they found a "kind of white people who wore deer skins, lived by hunting, associated with the Indians and acted like savages." As we…read moremeandered through the curvy mountains of VA and WVA to get here, we we worried as we didn't have any cell signals and much of the country roads were winding and barren, except of course for the beautiful foliage. Lots of open farmland and barns or just empty fields. But we drove with trepidation through these mountains until we finally arrived at Humpback Covered Bridge! It was worth the drive! Some other reviews have lots of stats about this bridge which is worth looking up, so I won't repeat them here, but suffice it to say, I was enthralled with this bridge that I've been wanting to visit for years!! I love covered bridges and have a collection of them on my Yelp profile if you'd like to take a gander. And I must say, this is one of my favorites considering the structural design, the historic value, the Virginia heritage, and lovely park area with picnic tables and the LOVE sign. Covington VA is definitely on my come back list!!

The bridge remained in active public use until 1929. In 1953, the bridge was reconditioned and the land purchased for this lovely park. Portable toilets, picnic benches and lighting. The historical Train Depot is located down hill off the main drag towards the river and it is still in operation today. Hinton is an Amtrak station in Hinton, West Virginia, served by the Cardinal. The station is a former Chesapeake and Ohio Railway depot, and is located in the Hinton Historic District. Constructed in 1905, the brick building includes wood canopies supported by heavy brackets featuring a wood-fan pattern trim. Tony and I parked beside the building and got out to walk around and enjoy the beauty of this old building. The train tracks are active so keep that in mind when playing around it and checking things out. I was able to peer into the windows, because the place is closed only open hours when the train is suppose to stop. Some of my photos are of some old photos of the location. Very interesting history for this building. It was the hub of the hub-lub in the area back in the day.... .

This is a great side trip for anyone in the area sightseeing. Tours are offered from April to…read moreOctober on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, but the grounds are open for touring even when the tours are not going on. I haven't made it to a tour yet but I really enjoyed walking around the grounds. Things to see include: the main house, a smoke house, a creamery, the family cemetery, a tobacco barn, the African American cemetery, and the friendship garden. They have been working on the African American cemetery, which needs a lot of help/maintenance. There is also a short woodland trail that goes to a platform within a dense grove of pines. If you can make it out in the fall, this place is absolutely stunning but it's pretty all throughout the year.

Now this feels like something you'd do at Disney or a theme park, but it's not that at all, because it's as real as possible right to the north of downtown Buchanan. The stone pier you see today is the original from 1851 and this bridge spans 366 feet across the James River and is 57.6 feet tall. And it sways or swings and you can not only feel it, but you can see it too. And it's all made out of wood. Seriously I was hesitant at first, good thing I had my 3 boys worn me, afraid of nothing with death not even a thought (it's not that bad). The view from the bridge are breathtaking and because of the uniqueness of it, it's just cool. You feel like you've walked into yesteryear, where the civil war raged, which it did. Apparently the original bridge was burned down as a strategy by the Confederate General McCausland. We spent about 20 minutes taking it in and our confidence grew the more we tested the old rickety bridge. Good times by one and all and we enjoyed the park and basketball hoops right next to the parking lot for the bridge. It's a beautiful downtown with lots of history. Next time your pass Buchanan, swing on by for a walk on the swinging bridge and step into history.

Back then, the toll to cross the bridge was five cents with an additional five cents for each additional horse, mule or oxen. The bridge was burned by Confederate forces in 1864 to prevent Federal forces from crossing the river on their way to Lynchburg but was rebuilt after the war. In 1937, the neighboring concrete bridge over the James River mostly replaced the use of this bridge but the bridge still remained. There is a free parking lot on the south side of the river. This little museum and historical church really brings you back in time. This is another location…read moreI'm proud to add to Yelp. We pulled up and it alsost seemed like it was closed, but the tourguide came out to welcome us and invited us in for our own little personal tour of the museum and church. She gave us a pretty detailed history of the church and it's beginnings in 1786. She was very knowledgeable and entertaining, I could tell she was in it for the love of it. The museum is full of period pieces, and although small, it is very interesting for anyone into history. The church itself is kept in remarkable condition, as is the little graveyard. Despite it's tumultous past, it is very serene and peaceful here. I enjoyed every minute.
