HCF approaches every workout this way, and it gave me the motivation to get back into fitness in February 2016. I say "team" because just like a more traditional team, everyone in the gym is in it together as one unit. Instead of working out individually, we are all pushing ourselves and each other through the same workout and toward the same goal. That being said, each athlete is unique and has their own talents and strengths, as well as weaknesses, so when someone is struggling through something, everyone else comes around and encourages them until they complete it. The mindset through every workout is "we're not done until we're all done" and it builds and incredible sense of camaraderie that I have missed. Competing as a synchronized swimmer for twelve years, I learned to value and rely on my teammates. I learned that to be successful I had to be selfless and put the success of the team ahead of my own. It took hard work and dedication, and I have found that same drive again at HCF. It doesn't matter how fast or slow you are, it doesn't matter what weight you put on the bar, it doesn't matter if you collapse in a sweaty heap after the workout. What matters are the people next to you. There was no enrollment fee or registration costs. Due to closures, the last day my daughter did a lesson was March 12, 2019. The site closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I was advised on April 20ththat the time missed would be added to the back end of the year . During the time the site was not doing classes and prior to the studio re-opening. I got an opportunity that was invaluable to me and we moved. We were apparently outside of bounds from any affiliate locations and unable to continue with VMA. Per section 28 of the contract means that I should have been refunded any remaining time on my contract minus a $150 cancelation fee. After much scrutiny, they finally processed my refund, but they only refunded me $985 with no clear explanation of how they came up with that number. There is nothing in the attached contract that justifies that reduction either. I should have been refunded $2018 but I was shorted $1033. $2600 / 12 months = $216 a month $2600 minus $432 for 2 months = $2168 (1/27 -3/27 even through last day was 3/12) $2168 minus cancelation fee of $150 = $2018 $2018 minus $985 (amount already refunded) = $1033 (disputed amount) I tried to rectify this with the site coordinator Mr. Price. He stated he was unable to refund this additional amount and it is not fair. As it stands, I paid $1615 for 2 months of classes. The Saldivar family are what I would consider pinnacles of our society. It's this fathers opinion…read morethey are one of the best places in SA to take your children or to train for yourself. I have great admiration for Mr & Mr's Saldivar and am very proud to say that our children went to their academy. I'm sure there are many different martial art academies or dojos around San Antonio to choose from but I would argue there are probably few that are comparable to Saldivar Martial Arts (SMA) when it comes to training in every aspect from martial arts to mind, body, and soul. The Saldivars are Christian so God is also a very important presence in their lives. Their faith is evident and as Christians ourselves having them speak into our children lives was all the better. We found out about SMA at our sons kindergarten school orientation as part of their after-school program (2014). Since both my wife and I had jobs and could not pick him up when school was over this seemed like a good option. Fast forward 5 years (2019)... one of the best decisions we ever made. For not only our oldest but for our second child as well. Both siblings attended SMA and we were blessed to see them grow and mature in every way. Their skills progressed as did their rank. There aren't very many 9 year olds who can say they earned a black belt but for our son, after many years of dedication and hard work and with the consideration of Mr. Saldivar a few weeks before his 10th birthday he had a black belt wrapped around his waist. For my wife & I... one of the proudest moments in our son's life. I almost tear up as write these words because I say again... we were blessed to have Mr. & Mrs. Saldivar in our lives. We grew very fond of not only them but of their instructors as well. I know there's a cliche about being "part of family" but here at SMA, it truly is a FAMILY. Our family and especially the kids made good friends that we will have a relationship with for a lifetime. It was in 2018 when we moved to a new home in another nearby town. During that time our son was in training to receive his black belt. It was a bit of a struggle but we continued to make the effort to attend classes. A lot of late nights and mileage but it was worth it. There was simply no other place we would go in order for him to get a black belt. The journey began at SMA and would end there no matter the inconvenience of living in another town. At this time (2020) the kids have decided to take on other activities (gymnastics & baseball).
