The Bishop's School - In honor of international women's day, my daughter Alía Yanín. You matter!

The Bishop's School

La Jolla

Was here for alumni weekend (I and my sister are TBS graduates), which in itself was fantastic to…read moreview all the improvements and new structures on campus, including the new library, and new to me pool, Ellen Browning Scripps building alterations and science center. In all, I feel that Bishop's (where I graduated) and La Jolla Country Day School (which I attended for junior high school) are the two best private schools in town. A Bishop's education unlocks the doors to a superior college education (coming from Bishop's, I was accepted at every college I applied to, including Harvard, Amherst College (which I attended), Brown, Dartmouth, Univ. of Pennsylvania, Princeton and U.C.S.D. My calculus book that I used at Bishop's was the same I used (at a higher level in college, of course) at Amherst College. Today, at Bishop's students have all the usual liberal arts classes - chemistry, biology, physics, math up to and including Advanced Placement AB and BC Calculus, English, history, art history, music, voice, studio art, painting, pottery, and languages (Today they may choose Chinese in addition to the usual Spanish, French, Latin), but nowadays they have advanced computer classes, even virtual reality programming classes. Bishop's prepares you for Advanced Placement (AP) classes - I took and receives 5s (the highest score possible) in seven subjects, and they also have International Baccalaureate (IB) classes. These classes give you college credit and may allow you to skip your freshman year in college. Bishop's produces National Merit Scholars (I was one) and semifinalists regularly. The atmosphere is positive, liberal, free spirited and serious, all at once. Students are prepared at a minimum for college (even at a place like Amherst College I was still a better writer than anyone in my college class), but also for success in life in general by teaching or instilling values of education, ethics, patience, healthy competitiveness, ambition, etiquette and much more. Seniors enjoy their own special "rec room" that they paint each year in a lively fashion. A yearly tradition is the theft and hiding by the junior class of the senior bench which is on the lawn in front of the rec room. Class spirit is encouraged with class mascots and division of each class into the Mighty Golds (I was one) and the Royal Purples. Although Bishop's is technically Episcopalian, and we do attend chapel weekly, all faiths are embraced and the chaplain himself often speaks privately to students who are not Christian, such as Muslims, exchanging religious views with them. If you'd like your child to enjoy one of the best high school educations money may buy, consider Bishop's. Bishop's is now 6th through 12th grades. Full and partial scholarships are available for select students.

This is a strange school, don't waste your money on this school…read more They say that they are selective with high standards and choose smart students, but no. Legacies are so important for them. Grades and talents are not important for them at all. They accept students with B or C grades. They choose students because of their physical appearances such as height with bad grades which is ridiculous. This is a high standard school or classes.

This Hyatt has one of the better outdoor pool areas that I've been to, so many activities, games,…read morethe pool is huge itself, there's an actual bar and music being played constantly, fire pits everywhere, pickleball area....it was just very family/kid friendly. I did appreciate that a lot my kids had a great time. The customer service was outstanding as well, our front desk girl I forgot her name she was great. Saw my kids and it was my daughter's bday she gave them complimentary smore kits, and had them pick out toys from their treasure box. Covered parking was $39 a night, they have a market that is opened 24/7 and has a good selection of food items and coffee. The lobby and other areas were nice too. Only thing is the rooms are for sure not sound proof, I could hear everything and the showers have like half doors so that was weird. But overall I would stay here again.

My friends and I decided to do a staycation in San Diego. Making reservation was super simple on…read morethe website. As soon as we arrived, finding our parking spot was smooth as they had a private parking garage. The line to check-in was a bit long, but it moved quickly. Since we were celebrating our anniversary, the hotel gave us a higher floor complimentary upgrade. We were super excited to check out our room. Upon entering our room, we realized that it was not cleaned properly. The floor was sticky and there was a used tshirt, perhaps from the older guest, lying in the closet. We were pretty disgusted by the room and requested for a change. However, they mentioned that there were no rooms available and only provided a room change after a day. However, we felt pretty uncomfortable about being pushed to stay in a dirty room despite complaining and raising concern. The next morning, we decided to spend some time at the pool and play pickleball. They have really good facilities and the hotel itself is very nice. The only downside was our experience with the room. They did change it after a day but the initial experience was so bad that I would not recommend this hotel.
