Located off busy Carrington Road in Mt Albert, Unitec is one of the leading technical universities in New Zealand. Specialising the hands-on, more creative courses like Graphic Design, Filmmaking and Building, Unitec offers fantastic tertiary programmes that are now recognised and valued overseas. Though I haven't personally attended Unitec, I really wish I had. I completed a BA degree at Auckland Uni and not a day goes by that I don't consider studying film or photography at Unitec. This isn't helped by the fact that I live right beside it, and am constantly impressed by the different events that are held on Unitec's grounds. Moreover, I am constantly envious of the grounds themselves. Unlike other university campuses in Auckland, Unitec offers its students free onsite parking, and dozens of appealing outdoor, spacious areas in which to study or sun yourself during breaks. The fields at Unitec are great. Despite being located within the realm of central Auckland, when on the Unitec campus you feel somewhat removed from it all. And unlike other universities, the atmosphere at Unitec is really welcoming and relaxed. If I ever go back to study, it will be at Unitec! Tip: The Unitec carparks are a great place to learn to drive. The little roads connecting each building are relatively traffic free during the weekend so are the perfect place to get used to driving and parking! read more

There are plenty of ghost stories haunting this place, and I was fortunate enough to take a tour with a former student here. It has that decaying and old worldly feel that makes you particularly drawn to it as a haunted house, but the fact it was a psychiatric hospital really adds to the creepy flavour. I say 'was', but there's still the Mason Clinic on campus for the criminally insane. Would you still like to go to University here? Well, I've heard good and bad things about Unitec. In my experience, it's a fascinating place to visit, take photos in and they are constantly drawing people in with new and innovative events, functions and programmes. Don't try and make a movie here unless you have big bucks, cause they will charge you big bucks for the effort, unless you happen to be a Unitec student. I'm not going to write a review of the course I did here, because that's all so changeable and will depend on who you have at the front of the classroom. One thing I was surprised about was the expectation that you'll be in class from 8.30am - 5pm; this is totally different to university if you're used to that timetable and something no-one really tells you before starting here. Unitec itself has a great campus; it's full of nooks and crannies, and sweeping vistas, and rugby playing fields, and contemporary Maori architecture, and former psychiatric hospitals. However the sheer size of it is a bit of a double edged sword; you can feel pretty cut off from campus life if you're not near the student services building. There is a mini bus that does loops of the campus though, which is totally useful if you don't feel like/aren't able to walk. The best cafe is in Building 1 - it's pretty tucked away, so much so that I'm sure most students don't know that it's there. Make sure you check out the former hospital buildings; the former chapel has still been kept and isn't used for classes, so it's pretty atmospheric. You can also get to Oakley Creek and its waterfall from the Waterview side of the campus; this is worth a walk. read more

I have never been a student at Unitec but I have attended events at the tech. I remember going to Unitec as part of a high school trip for some business studies group I was in. I loved the learning environment, everyone was so friendly to us plus the food served at the food courts are decent. The subway there doesn't raction out ingredients, you actually get your money's worth. Another things about Unitec is the events hosted there, sounds in the sun is the perfect example of how green and beautiful the tech is. It's away from the hustle and bustle of the city, meaning parkinf there is in abundance. First come first serve but at least it's there. read more

The facilities here range from the really good to the really crap. The campus is huge and there are lost of wide open grassy areas and their gym isn't too bad either. The newer part of the school is really nice, it's pretty modern and there are lots of facilities on site like a travel agency, a book store, post office and cafes. But unfortunately when I was at Unitec I was in the old, psychiatric institution part. And I don't think it has been at all updated since then. The rooms are just so old and run down and it seemed like they were never cleaned. I wish they would just update the old facilities a little to make it seem more of a cohesive campus. read more

Fake English language Scholarship on the moodle, I was very exciting to find out English Language Scholarship, I have been worry about my tuition for a while, i make money and save living cost as i can but not enough to pay for my tuition, i thought maybe i need to suspend my studying, you can't imagine how happy when i saw this scholarship. i send email to apply for this Scholarship. And i satisfy all requires on the moodle. An ridiculous reason reject my apply, i been told i am not first year student,so i can not apply this scholarship I have to say i love Unitec, i love my teachers, but this make up reason makes me sick, where is this 'first year student 'require come from? If this require on the moodle at first, that is fine, but when students already apply it, then staff reject our apply because this nonexistent reason, that make us feel uncomfortable, if a freshman apply for it, Is it possible staff have other nonexistent reason to say no? read more

My son studied there a year ago. Few professors were very mean to him and they don't seem care about student's well being. For some reason I got the feeling they fail students just to mint money, such a shame and waste of money studying in one of the most so-called reputed colleges in New Zealand. read more
