I've just started at AUT. I've been to UoA and Massey, so listen up. Of the three, AUT is the most enjoyable. Smaller class sizes makes learning more intimate, less isolating, and more engaging. The new Sir Paul Reeves is awesome. Staff and students are friendlier, making it a nicer environment than UoA.
However, I found the courses too easy. I already have a lot of experience at university, so this is to be expected. Still, the workload is considerably smaller, and time spent in class is lower by about 2 hours a week. It depends on what course you take though.
AUT is probably a good option for: a high school leaver, someone who has been out of academia for a while, or someone who wants to boost their confidence. I failed many courses at UoA because I found the isolation and personal invisibility psychologically damning, despite being a good student. It was very depressing. AUT is a bit nicer; the lecturers know your name, and there are support networks for students who struggle.
In terms of education quality, I think one should look at the lecturers' credentials. They are as good as anyone else. Many have taught at UoA or still teach there.
I don't think it matters where you graduate, but whether you enjoyed studying there, because nobody seems to care where you went. Not everyone will enjoy the smaller class sizes and slower pace at AUT; they may want to be seen as equals to "the best and the brightest" or whatever. If that's you, I beg you not to come here - I've had enough of wannabe geniuses. read more
