Our floors were installed in our newly built home by Unique Wood Designs. Almost immediately, the filler started coming out. Shane was very nice at first and agree to fix them. Unfortunately, when his crew attempted to fix them, it ruined the finish on the floor around those areas. He then agreed to refinish the floors. When his crew refinished the floors, they did nothing to protect our woodwork and splashed stain and polyurethane all over our white baseboards and door moldings. They also missed spots and polyurethaned over clumps of hair (I had completely vacuumed the entire floor the morning of their arrival and they said they would do it again). Despite multiple phone calls, Shane refused to call me back and told our builder that the baseboards were our problem, not his. And the filler continues to come out. read more

They were extremely hard to get ahold of through the entire project. At one point, there was no communication for over three weeks. This project was not the largest project. It was a simple kitchen remodel. New flooring had to be laid down to match the existing. The flooring and work totaled around $1300. Again, not a large amount, but still important to me as the customer. The bid was to complete the wood tie in, re-sand, and stain. UWD came in and did the large stuff, but left several flawed finished areas including cracks in between the boards, and a large outline of a 2x4 that they sanded and stained around. When talking to the owner and operator, we were told that it was a complete and new issue about the 2x4 and that it was because of a sink brace that was left there. That is correct. There was a sink brace there. However, the old floor needed to be removed from under that sink brace and new wood laid. This was completed. But then they sanded and stained around it? (see attached pictures) The kitchen contractor contacted UWD and after weeks of no response, they were contacted yet again. They sent someone out, but the problems remain. Cracks remain and the outline remains. Finally, UWD contacted me personally in a slightly contentious conversation and were more concerned about getting their money than fixing the small things left behind. UWD-"...it won't take me long to fill in the cracks, but I'm not very motivated to come out there and fix it because I see an open invoice." Me- "...I'm finding my motivation to pay for a job that is unfinished is equally as low. Who pays for a job that is not complete? The cracks are still there and the outline of the 2x4 is worrisome." UWD- "Well, that is a whole other issue. We were in there way to early. I would have to come in and re-sand and stain because there was a sink brace there. That should have been moved." Me- "There was a sink brace there that would have had to have been moved to tear up the old flooring and lay the new flooring. Somehow that part of the job got done, but then your guys sanded and stained around it. That is weird." UWD- "No. We could have torn up the floor and laid the new ones without moving the sink brace." That is odd to me. It feels like a child painting around an area without moving things to paint underneath the items. Then the child says they are done with the job and they want their allowance. Would you give them their allowance, or expect them to finish the job correctly? I suppose I have learned my lesson. Go with someone else. When the big stuff is done, the finishing touches and the remaining items to make it look good are not on their radar. I would expect this from a big box store subcontractor, but not a small business. They are more interested in the big business of new builds, and even then, I hear through the grapevine they do the bare minimum without attention to detail. As someone else has said (perfectly), they are extremely unresponsive when one calls them out on a problem with their work. Price is comparable to others in the area. I had my floors done about two years ago and wish I had had the fortitude to speak up then. All the dents from the nail gun the uneven sanding and wide gaps could make me cry. I don't think they are even all hickory as they dent so easily. Plus, we found out they couldn't have possibly put three coats of varnish on in the time frame they had. My stairs are an absolute mess!! Anyone wants to see them come on over. I have already cost him three jobs and would love to save someone the heartache we have had over the floors. read more

We purchased a home just north of Cheyenne and the seller agreed to have the cherrywood flooring resanded and refinished to remove numerous scratches from large dogs previously kept in the house. The cost of this effort was over $5000. Unique Wood came in and sanded/finished the floors but left several flawed finished areas on the steps into the living room where one can easily see raw wood and gouges. The seller asked them to return and complete the job. After several weeks of no response, they were contacted yet again. They sent someone out but the problem was still not fixed. Lesson learned - once the initial job is complete, these people are uninterested in fixing any mistakes they may have left - "one and done" that is it. Furthermore they are extremely unresponsive when one calls them out on a problem with their work. Do NOT use these people if you care about your current or future wood flooring. read more

I hired Unique Wood Designs to put a select grade of red oak into my kitchen. Shane Pickle, the owner, billed me for select grade, but installed a number 2 grade. The floor developed wide cracks between the boards over the winter and the filler fell out. He came back and replaced a few boards in the center of the room and only sanded that portion. The stain did not match. He did it a second time and still the stain did not match. He refused to do the entire room because I think he was afraid to work against my white cupboards. This could have all been avoided if he had done the job correctly in the first place. I had to hire another flooring company to fix his mess. I sued him in small claims court and won my case, but still he refuses to refund my money. Based on my experience, I have concluded that Shane Pickle is unethical, dishonest and incompetent.You could pick-up six random people off the street, give them some old barn wood and get a better floor than I got with Unique Wood Designs. read more
