If you're in Penzance and looking for a good hotel bar that's quiet, comfy and welcoming you won't get much better than The Union Hotel.

We arrived by train; you walk about 20-25min to the house and a taxi is recommended if you have a lot of luggage or children because it goes uphill and then downhill when you walk. We were greeted like old friend by Andrew, the owner. Our first time, we had a twin room with ensuite on the top floor not facing the sea which we didn't mind at all as we really wanted a good night's sleep and not the noise from the street. The breakfast is really fantastic. Every day I tried a different one and until today I can't really decide which was the best. They were all delicious. Andrew was very helpful to give tips what to do in the area and how to get to places. The city centre is just 5min away if you short cut up the hill and through the park. We had a wonderful stay at Glencree House and do recommend it! The second time we had a twin room with half-view of the sea and an insight into Andrew's backyard. We heard his kids playing in the garden which wasn't a problem as we weren't in most of the time anyway. Nothing had changed since last time, same hospitality, great breakfast, clean and tidy room. Thanks to Molly and Lisa for being a great help to Andrew and Lynsey. We had a wonderful time in Glencree House - only the poor neigbour's dog that seemed to be shut out of the house very often, barking at the door, was something to get used to - and nothing was too much for Andrew and Lynsey, always helping out with so many things. I very much appreciated the help they gave when I needed a printout for a flight ticket and they offered to print it for me. Thank you again. I have been to so many guesthouses now but Glencree is always my No. 1. Room Tip: Rooms facing the street are quieter as it's a side street but rooms facing the sea have a wonder... Green Features: The house has only family and friends tested shampoo, shower gel and hand soap, and delicious breakfast where the food comes from local farmers.

Filthy. No service…read moreon arrival. Waited 15 minutes after ringing the bell in the "lobby" which was merely a desk full of trash and strewn paper. Unkempt pets (owners' dogs) running around the property. They barked constantly into the night (after 11 pm). Revolting and lingering odor. Not lavender as claimed. Nasty unclean stench. Old bathroom (1960's). Worn out beds. Sunk 6 inches when climbed upon. Old sheets and duvet/comforter. Worn carpet. Dirty feeling altogether and had to wash all my clothes to remove the odor after I left. DO NOT DO NOT stay here. Overpriced and owners should spend more time on the property versus carefully answering poor reviews which they do...not to mention their own room (left open for tenants to see...an absolute pigsty). This was the only hotel among about 40 during my travels in Europe, including England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, France, and Italy, for which I demanded my money back. I am not fussy, but this was not acceptable.

Selected a double room with ensuite and were told there was only a twin room left with a bathroom across the hallway. Inside is old, smelly with rotten carpets. We did not stay for our included breakfast, instead went to McDonalds down the road. Whole hotel made my skin crawl. Booked this on bookings.com. It should not even be listed!! I would give it minus one star. Stay there at your own peril!!!

We had an unusual experience - while checking in my husband realized he'd left his computer bag on the train. Ross happened to be entering the lobby right at that moment and immediately said he'd drive my husband back to the train station to retrieve it - before the train left. Luckily my husband was able to get his bag back, but definitely not without Ross's help. Thank goodness for Ross and the quickness and kindness he showed. We really appreciated this act of kindness. Now the hotel....we love it! The reception was friendly and attentive, our room is well organized, clean and cozy and with an amazing view! We already can't wait to come back!

I can't help but feel, after spending two nights in Penzance, that this is probably the best hotel…read morein town, but that doesn't make it good. The website presents a picture of what one might want in a hotel on the coast, but doesn't deliver it in any way. It's set in a residential area, which is nice and quiet, and just a short walk to the town center. But, the website is the "best" part of this hotel. We booked a Superior Double sea view room, which despite it being one of the highest-priced rooms at the hotel, was tiny. The furniture is quite scuffed up, indicating years of wear and tear, and there's no place to store baggage where you won't trip over it at some point. What I absolutely hated about this hotel was the parking lot. If you have a large car, don't come here or arrange alternate parking because your car will not fit. I lived in the UK for nearly five years and am accustomed to the smaller parking spaces, but these are ridiculous. They're tiny and strangely angled, making it nearly impossible to park within the spot. In fact, several spaces were unavailable because people had to take up two. You're likely to not have a space to park in if you arrive back late and the hotel is full, as there are far fewer spaces than rooms in the hotel. If they don't have a space, you'll have to find street parking in the adjacent neighborhood. Trying to leave? Good luck. It's a bit of a jam if two cars are trying to leave at the same time, and you'll likely have to blindly back out onto the residential street. Also, the staff is observant, but in a lazy/irresponsible way. For example, at breakfast one morning, the waitress spotted a small bit of food remnants on my wife's bread plate. Instead of simply getting another one, she quickly flicked the material off of the plate and proceeded to continue serving my wife. Gross! Overall, I wouldn't stay here again. It doesn't meet the expectations it sets for itself, and if a business isn't true to itself, how can it be true to the customer?
