A gorgeous boutique near the bottom of Victoria Street, Red Door sells all kinds of irresistible, DIY gifts from limited edition screenprints, tote bags and tea towels to sock monkeys, stuffed toys and Tatty Divine jewellery. Everything seems to have been made by hand by talented artists and there's a strong proportion of cute and kitsch things that should appeal to indie kids and arty farty types. To top it off, they sell adorable wrapping paper and stationary - including glow in the dark and scratch and sniff cards - making Red Door a one-stop shop for memorable presents.

It would be very easy to walk straight past this shop, but it is definitely worth a look. Morningside Gallery has a fantastic display of eclectic art from a wide range of artists. They showcase original paintings as well as some limited edition pieces too. Morningside Gallery offer a wide selection of different paintings including places in Edinburgh, life drawings, nature scenes as well as some more abstract pieces of art. 3-D works are also available, as are sculptures. The paintings are truly beautiful and you are able to view the pieces of work available for sale on their website. Ceramics and jewellery are also available to buy at the Gallery. I cannot wait until I am able to afford some to the beautiful pieces of art for sale in the Morningside Gallery.

I spent almost a month in Scotland for a milestone birthday and it was a truly wonderful experience. Most of the museums are free which I definitely wasn't used to being from San Diego; none of ours are. We walked through the national mall and I was in awe. The history of the buildings in the mall were older than the United States which is crazy. As we entered we were greeted by several extremely friendly employees including the security guard. I stopped at the information desk to ask questions and get a map. Then we set off through the rooms and floors. Most art was centuries ago was religious themed which I had forgotten, walking through the museum I was floored at the detail and the preservation of the pieces. My friend who accompanied me was not a museum person but he too got caught up in the sheer beauty of it all. I'm excited to return to Edinburgh in 2026 and I will absolutely be spending another full day here.

We recently made our way over to the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art after my son…read morerecommended it to us. I love all things art and free art is even better! The building we walked into was impressive itself but they were in the middle of changing exhibits upstairs so we were limited to the main floor. After being a little disappointed at the lack of art on display, we learned we were in Modern Two and there was a whole other building across the street - Modern One! It was nearly closing time so we quickly made our way over there. We were very happy to see the variety and quantity of works on display! I loved seeing an Edvard Munch lithograph, a colorful David Hockney acrylic, a Picasso - and many more interesting works by new-to-me artists! I hope to get back here again when I have more time to explore!

It's free to enter and provides an interesting insight into the current exhibitor's work, of which I saw Darren Woodhead's watercolour paintings of flora and fauna. The gallery's attendant was more than willing to share information on the origins of the paintings, which was a welcome change to the often silent and sombre mood of big name art galleries. Why not 5 stars? While the paintings were mostly £950 + even the smallest prints were pushing the £300 pound mark, not tempting to buy but great to look at.

I was very surprised when I stumbled upon this gallery in the middle of Lintlithgow…read more The Line Gallery is an independent gallery exhibiting "fine and applied" art. They show a range of mediums, from basket makers to jewellers! They seemingly take pride in showing variety and at any one time you will be able to see a number of works from different artists, often themed. When I visited there were a few artists on display (the work that is, not the people). It was all okay, some of it interesting, some of it not really my thing. A significant portion was taken up by bronze and bronze resin sculptures by and artist named Sophie Howard. Technically they looked impressive at least. It's hard to review a place like this based solely on its temporary displays. All I can say is I was impressed by its variation. The staff there were really nice and generally enjoyed browsing around. It is a bit small but they make the most of their space. Definitely somewhere worth checking out again.
