No snobbery or intimidation, just a relaxed atmosphere and some stunning artwork. I've only seen a couple shows so far but they've tended to feature paintings that are expressive, figurative, and colorful: pretty much my favorite type of art.

So this one had a lot to live up to. It's definitely catering to a completely different taste, as I'd say these frames are so understated they hardly draw attention from the painting itself. There're some wonderful paintings by a certain artist the shop seems to be featuring at the moment. Trust me to forget her name. My point is I was more interested by those than any of the frames. There's also some nice jewellery in a centre display, which is moderately priced and unusual-looking enough to buy.

I always thought it was kinda odd for Marchmont to have its own little gallery. For ages I even…read morethought that it wasn't really a gallery but just a shop full of bits and bobs made by folks who lived around the area. But then my friend's photo appeared in the gallery's window with a wee price tag on it (all very exciting!). And I guess that's when I started believing in its gallery status. It is still, undeniably, a place full of bits and bobs. There're paintings, photographs and glasses that are made out beer bottles (they look cooler than they sound, I assure you). They're not just a gallery, though, as they also do framing. And, I guess if you're a Marchmont-er, it's a pretty interesting place to just stop in on. Just for the novelty. Or just because something in the window might just catch your eye. I'm quite persuasive and could go on for a few more hundred words on why you should check it out. But I'm going to leave your eyes to do the rest (if they were to wander to the Marchmont end of town).

Lickety Splits definitely has a lot more character than most and if it's wedding favours, gifts, childrens party bags or just some sweets for yourself you don't have to look any further. It's a really nice idea for wedding favours and all you need to do is choose what kind of sweets it is you're after and Lickety Splits will gift wrap everything into little favours, very cute. The decor is gorgeous with wooden flooring, quirky tables and polka dot patterns, it's very bright and airy and all the sweets are organised in glass tubs on fresh white painted shelves. My favourite sweeties have to be the little chocolate cups they're so addictive and moreish. I only found out about this place last week but I think I'll be popping in quite a bit now I know it's there, I could go for some fried eggs just now actually.

The lady in the shop was very knowledgable about her stock. She was able to match people with their local sweets and talk a lot about the changes sweets have gone through over the years (no more cocaine on our sweeties!!). The gallery/gift shop area was a nice little browse too. The shop is very small so our group of 10 was a bit squashed when some other shoppers arrived. The shop is dog friendly and had some water and food outside for any visiting pooches!

A gorgeous boutique near the bottom of Victoria Street, Red Door sells all kinds of irresistible, DIY gifts from limited edition screenprints, tote bags and tea towels to sock monkeys, stuffed toys and Tatty Divine jewellery. Everything seems to have been made by hand by talented artists and there's a strong proportion of cute and kitsch things that should appeal to indie kids and arty farty types. To top it off, they sell adorable wrapping paper and stationary - including glow in the dark and scratch and sniff cards - making Red Door a one-stop shop for memorable presents.

I'm a huge museum geek. I go to the museum as often as possible in whatever city I'm in. This visit…read morewas many years ago (should have written a review a long time ago). I spent almost a month in Scotland for a milestone birthday and it was a truly wonderful experience. Most of the museums are free which I definitely wasn't used to being from San Diego; none of ours are. We walked through the national mall and I was in awe. The history of the buildings in the mall were older than the United States which is crazy. As we entered we were greeted by several extremely friendly employees including the security guard. I stopped at the information desk to ask questions and get a map. Then we set off through the rooms and floors. Most art was centuries ago was religious themed which I had forgotten, walking through the museum I was floored at the detail and the preservation of the pieces. My friend who accompanied me was not a museum person but he too got caught up in the sheer beauty of it all. I'm excited to return to Edinburgh in 2026 and I will absolutely be spending another full day here.

We recently made our way over to the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art after my son…read morerecommended it to us. I love all things art and free art is even better! The building we walked into was impressive itself but they were in the middle of changing exhibits upstairs so we were limited to the main floor. After being a little disappointed at the lack of art on display, we learned we were in Modern Two and there was a whole other building across the street - Modern One! It was nearly closing time so we quickly made our way over there. We were very happy to see the variety and quantity of works on display! I loved seeing an Edvard Munch lithograph, a colorful David Hockney acrylic, a Picasso - and many more interesting works by new-to-me artists! I hope to get back here again when I have more time to explore!

The art work on offer here, really is of high quality. These art pieces are art that you would be…read moreproud to have on your wall, but as always with real art this does come at a price. What really sets this shop out from other art shops is their willingness to undertake commissions. All you need to do is to show what you want with a photograph or tell them what you want done and it shall be so.

Well this place's stock certainly isn't…read more Some of the most amateur art work I've ever seen and we have a picture done with red emulsion paint done by my other half to "fill a gap, eh?". I'm not used to a world of buying, or indeed, selling art but it does seem to be an uphill struggle to find something that isn't a load of shite. Hundreds of talented Art students graduate every year - commission them by offering them some roll-up tobacco as payment and a copy of a CD of a band no one's ever heard of.

This is a wonderful little gallery, tucked away from the hustle and bustle on Candlemaker Row. You…read morecould walk past this place a thousand times and never notice it was there. But you do need to notice, because the gallery has some brilliant items for sale. It focuses mostly on prints, ranging from as little as a tenner all the way up to £100+. The majority of prints I picked up were priced between £20 to £40, and limited editions at that. So good prices for what's on offer. The art is mostly graphic, with graffiti, stencils and poster art all making an appearance. There are a lot of band posters, so the musos amongst us can find some great pieces to put up on the wall. There are also a lot of references to movies and pop culture, which is extra fun. The items for sale are completely accessible and a lot of fun - this is what art should be about. It also looks like the gallery supports a lot of local artists, so well worth a visit to help keep our artistic scene alive and kicking.

I'm told that they can frame something up for you in under and hour which is really impressive, and it's not that expensive (depends what you're framing really). And yes, pictures do look better once they are mounted into one of the ast range of frames in this place. You may be wondering then what it is I do in a frame shop if I dont have framing needs - well, I'm in the market for a print (I dont know what I want yet), and framers has quite a large selection of them, as well as of birthday cards etc. Maybe one day I will find the print I want and then get the F-Team (a renigade team of Framers on the run from the law for crimes they didnt commit) to fix it up for me. If I can find them.
