This one's in Chueca, so it doesn't feel like it was in the thick of the tourist corridor. It sits on a quiet residential street just two minutes from the Chueca metro exit, in a neighborhood known for its independent character and social diversity. Compared with more traditional food halls, the market is modern, eco-friendly and definitely has a more global perspective when it comes to culinary options. Spread across three floors, the ground level functions as a traditional market with fresh produce and meats, while the first floor offers a wide variety of international bites in separate, non-identical tapas and fast-food stalls. The selection appears to have something for everyone tortillas and croquetas, fried seafood, Valencian paella, fresh sushi, traditional charcuterie, American-style burgers, a bevy of Middle Eastern baklava. The top floor features a stylish rooftop restaurant dominated by a terrace lounge. This floor is open to 1:30AM on weekends when it becomes quite the popular social hub for locals and tourists alike. Great energy in the market. Can be difficult to find a seat at a table but there's plenty of standing counters along the perimeter.

We had just strolled from Plaza Mayor on a Monday afternoon at 4:30PM. It was completely packed like an indoor version of The Great Migration in really slow motion. We could hardly see any of the food much less be able to order anything or even less, find any place to eat it. Through the masses, I could tell it was a high-end gourmet hall, and apparently over thirty vendors do business here. I saw maybe two. Come at 10AM if you have any interest in trying the food here. The cacophonous late afternoon anarchy made us lose our appetites. If you think my assessment is unfair, I suggest you march off the cliff with the rest of the Instagram lemmings. I also love their chocolate-filled mini croissants, and for some reason, the ones from this location gave me stomach grief. This location was alike any other Mercadona, except it seemed that everyone knew each other, and we stood out like a sore thumb. So much so, that, apart from the weird looks, the security guard followed us EVERYWHERE we went. I even started staring at him to see if he got the point...he did, and he would walk away, but BAM! he was right there behind us in the next aisle... If I look like I need to steal food, I wouldn't be able to afford a $200 Calvin Klein coat....just saying.
