The Plough & Harrow is a very old pub situated on an old Roman and London Road. It used to be an…read moreold coaching inn, and still has the old fabulous stables, redone and adding a touch of history to the place. A few years ago it was partially ruined in a flood, but the rebuild has gone a long way to making it one of the best pubs in Tamworth. It has a very large garden, lots of tables, a canopy and outside braziers for nice but chilly spring evenings. The inside has low ceilings, exposed beams and magnolia walls. It's a nice, comfy old English pub feel, but without the tatty standard maroon carpet. There aren't many tables inside, so standing is pretty much a must. The Plough & Harrow gets really busy on weekend nights, and is a haven to the young and trendy Tamworth set (you didn't know they existed, did you?) before they go on to a club. The music is pretty decent, through speakers, and so loud on weekends that talking inside isn't very plausible. The P&H also have a very nice restaurant attached, which I haven't been to, but have heard very positive reviews about -- it's mainly Italianish food with a modern twist. The pub grub here is very good, with some different things (Cajun Chicken Sandwich, YUM), and with excellent chips. I can't rave enough about these chips, which are nearly potato wedges, nicely cooked with delicious seasoning. The main bartender/manager is a really friendly guy, and all the staff are pretty chatty and nice. They often have fun activities, both for adults in the evening and families at the weekends, like an American 4th of July party (yay!), and festivals. They provide accomodation, which some of my friends from the US took advantage of when they came over for my wedding. The rooms are all refurbished and nicely laid out, with comfy beds and decent WCs. Nothing astonishing, exccept when you consider the SUPER CHEAP price. The rooms are all a bit off from the pub, so the noise level also isn't too bad.

We're glad we bothered to go a little bit off the motorway, as it was a lovely place to stop. The food was excellent- a wide variety of pub favourites and more unusual stuff at reasonable prices. The atmosphere was friendly and fairly warm, it was all beautifully clean and quite cosy inside, and it was easily worth spending the 10 minutes driving that it took to get away from Tamworth motorway services. We paid just over £26.00 for 2 carveries, tonic water and a lager. The carvery was the worst we had had there. Usually if meat had gone dry they would take the top slice off - it was dry and the beef was hard. The veg trays were no better - must have been left uncovered for a long while. Overall my husband and I both agreed that the meal was very dry and unsavoury and only warm. Both agreed that food could not have been checked or fresh food replaced for a while as it usually is. Needlessless to say we will not visit this carvery again, even though the time of day might have played it's part - if fresh tasty food is what you are looking for, be careful to visit at busy times. They run a grand pub, full of fun with great local music acts every Friday and most Saturdays. My husband originally strolled into this pub thinking we'd have a laugh at the local cheesy entertainment. However, the songstress, who used to perform at Disney World and with their cruise ships, knocked our socks off singing a bunch of jazz and classics, along with covering the sugar out of Amy Winehouse and The Noisettes. Well impressed like, we was. This pub used to be well known as a drug haven (and not just cannabis), and was known for having the police in nearly every weekend for fights and the like. They had topless bar maids and it was a real dive. In 2005, the current landlords came in and really cleaned the place up. They redecorated, got a bunch of very large local boys in to keep the fighters away, and added a new food menu. Slowly but surely, the place turned around to become a real community pub. It's great for families, and often have carnivals in the summer and hold community events. On the weekends, it's great for adults, as the local bands and singers they get in are absolutely fabulous (especially Partners in Crime, a favourite). The beer is cheap, and they have all the cocktail spirits a girl could want. The best part is the crowd, though. The regulars vary in age from 20-50, and it's definitely not just an old man's pub. It's a favourite of local 20-somethings to frequent before they go out to a club in Brum, and for the less adventurous of us, they often stay open til 2am, at which point we teeter home on 4" heels that seemed like such a good idea at the beginning of the evening. Everyone in the pub is friendly, always good for a laugh, and happy to chat. No fights, no drama, just good clean fun and great music, karaoke and sport during the week. The landlady makes an excellent Sunday Roast, and the wine menu has recently been revamped to add some excellent choices rarely seen in Tamworth!

The Green Man is tucked away down a long winding country lane, as you head toward the M42 from Tamworth. It's always been known locally as a gastropub with lots of national awards, until a few years ago, it attracted the attention of Vintage Inns, and was bought up. They still do great food, but the menu is a bit cheaper, and the wines and beers and menu items are to be found throughout the country. The food is always well-cooked, with nary a hint of frozen fare. The beers are plentiful, with some nice bitters on tap. The wines aren't that interesting, and I think the entire chain could use a bit of Sommelier advice. When I see Hardy's on a wine menu, I run for the Nottage hills, and don't take the place's wine advice. The Green Man is in an 18th century building -- beware of the ceiling if you're a taller chap, with great patina and character. It's very comfortable, and is set out in a circular pattern -- if you can't find a seat, just keep walking to your right! All the chairs and couches are very comfy, and there's lots of private nooks for a couple or a small group to chat quietly. The gardens are very pretty and expansive, and if the sun continues to shine, get out there and enjoy your food!

I had not been since I was a child I am loathed to admit, but it was my birthday and we just wanted a nice relaxed intimate family meal. we were not disappointed. With so much other stuff going on we did not get there until half two and they were just finishing serving meals. The landlord quickly went to speak to the chef and they happily continued service just for us. The choice was not vast - basically either sunday roast with a choice of 4 meats. Or baguettes and salads if you are wanting something lighter. I would easily eat a roast beef dinner every day of the week if I could so the decision was not hard. The portions were just right and the meat was so tender it just melted in your mouth. The veg was cooked just right too. The staff made a fuss of both of our children, and even gave my seven year old boy a free coke as he had been so good with his manners!!!!! We will certainly be back. Oh and the chef even came out of the kitchen and asked us if the food was ok.
