Julian Graves

I think Julian Graves needs to shake up its image a bit, at least in the Kingston branch. I don't…read moreknow how they look in the other branches, but this place looks a bit tired and old hat; health food shops are the new meccas, they can be cool if they try, but dear old Julian Graves looks a bit like it's still 1974, when the only people who shopped in health food stores were geography teachers and Tom and Margo from The Good Life. Also, I get slightly confused by what kind of shop it actually is. I have always associated it with health food, but it sells nougat, chocolate buttons and the kind of sweets you would find in a Woolies pick and mix. Of course, it sells the huge bags of dried fruit and nuts that it is known for, and has plenty of special offers. I pick up yogurt mixes here - I am making my own yogurt - just like Tom and Margo, but that is usually it. I tried the goji berries here once and they were not as good as other goji's that I have tried, so for now, I will give it a Must Try Harder grade.

Julian Graves is a bit of a strange one. Ostensibly it appears to be very much a healthy food…read moreoutlet but look a little closer and many items are definitely more naughty than nice on the good nutrition front. I was surprised to find that otherwise healthy soya nuts had several (unnecessary) additives, including MSG. It is a handy place to shop for larger bags of herbs and spices which offer better value than tiny supermarket jars. Also good for a wide range of seeds and nuts. If you can be bothered and want to avoid additives, it's worth checking labels here and visiting regularly as they often have good offers that make their prices more competitive.

Epsom Thai - Chichen satay

Epsom Thai is in a little concentration of restaurants on South Street. As its name says, it's…read moreliterally a Thai restaurant in Epsom. I think it's a good restaurant for families as it's child-friendly but for adults and for flavour, I prefer Mae Ping by the train station. All the usual dishes are on the menu but everything tastes a bit toned down, perhaps to appeal more to kids. So the curries are a bit muted, the zing of fresh lime and creaminess of coconut which defines this cuisine is somehow lacking that crucial edge for me. It's edible but average. Service is always very hospitable but the food only merits an average 3 stars.

The aptly named Epsom Thai, as others have pointed out, is indeed a Thai restaurant in Epsom. It's…read moregenerally been our go-to destination for Thai curry takeaway, and we haven't been disappointed yet. The red prawn curry is my personal favourite, though if you enjoy a bit of heat, the green curry is quite tasty as well. I've only actually sat down to eat in the restaurant once, and unfortunately I wouldn't necessarily rush to go back. The décor is very comfortable and well suited to a Thai restaurant, and the food was still delicious, but the staff seemed disorganized at best. A manager or owner was mostly ignoring his customers, instead just shouting at the waitresses instructing them to shuffle tables around to pack in as many diners as possible. Unfortunately this resulted in half of our table being taken out from under us halfway through our meal, and my wife being virtually trapped in the front corner of the restaurant by another bizarre choice in table placement. Luckily, the food was still delicious, and as it was a busy Friday night, we simply shrugged off the service oddities and enjoyed our meal. To sum up, 5 stars for takeaway, 3 stars for the dine-in experience, 4 stars overall.

Siam Paragon is Hampton Courts and East Moleseys Thai Restaurant. I really like this place, but…read moreunfortunately it is a little too expensive for me. It is not silly expensive, but, as with all Thai restaurants, you always end up ordering more than one dish, so the price really adds up. In fact, the only time when I order plenty of dishes is when I am being taken on a date here (and it is obvious that we are not going to go Dutch). I think one of the reasons why it is pricey is that the food is very well made; you can tell that good quality ingredients have been used. Importantly for all MSG phobics - they do not use this additive in any of the dishes. Also they must have to charge a lot because it is a very large restaurant - the trouble is that it is often quiet, so you may find yourself eating with just a few other tables filled. If you do come here, you will find that pretty much everything on the menu is a good choice. Choose a mixed starters, which includes the Thai fish cakes. For a main, I always go for a fish dish - the crispy Tilapia fish, or Seafood on Fire (very hot), are both delicious. Of course the curries are worth having here too. Vegetarians will be happy to here that there is a comprehensive separate vegetarian menu - I often order from here and am always happy with my choice.
