The Restaurant is modern and feels joyously intimate as though you are eating in someone's home. It is stylish and well laid out to make the best use of the space. Peter is the owner and chef and he manages to create masterpieces in the smallest of kitchens. He is exacting about freshness and this is reflected in the food. I have been here many times and the food is undoubtedly excellent. I especially love the crab dumplings in Sake sauce. Just a word of warning for people on a budget, there is a minimum food charge which used to be $25 but I believe it may have increased to around $35. It certainly isn't a cheap night out but it is worth the money for a special occasion or just a treat!

I am beside myself…read more Yakumi has always been one of my favourite local restaurants and one that I have recommended to many friends, for its atmosphere, quality of food and friendly service. Much to my anguish, that all changed last night. After perusing the menu, we asked for a refresher on what was gluten free, as it's never been indicated anywhere. The waitress (who was new) advised not a lot, but would check with the chef. She came back and abruptly told us absolutely nothing. When we questioned that, and asked about the edamame for instance, which along with the sashimi is definitely gluten free, she commented in a dismissive manner as she was walking off, "oh apart from that of course." When you are easily going to be paying $50pp plus drinks, I expect cordial service not downright rudeness. I can understand the waitress may have been under pressure due to being new, but for the chef to respond in the way that he did is unforgivable. It can't be blamed on new management either, because I recognised a lot of the staff, including the chef. At that point we got up and left. Never to return. What a disappointment.

Generally, I go to Hahndorf for two things.....Beer and German Sausages. The last thing I expected…read moreto find in the main street was a Japanese restaurant that I liked! My inner Ninja-Samurai was doing cool wire-fighting back flips for joy when I entered this place, and for good reason. Haru is super happy smile time hi-five cool Joe! I have included a pic of the blown up menu that sits out the front so you can share in the awesomeness......firstly check out the spiral thingy. I saw these 'Twister Fries' on a food show recently, and I was stoked to find them on the menu at Haru! Basically they are a whole potato on a stick, cut in an unbroken spiral and deep dried.......How many times can I say awesome in one review? More, I can definately say it more! Many of the other dishes are stock standard, like the popular Chicken Katsu Don and, my personal favourite snack, Takoyaki. The Bento boxes are the big stand out though (along side the spiral spud). I tried the spicy pork Bento and it was Bento-lishes! Get on them, Awesome says it all!

*queues music* " I'm turning Japanese I think I'm turning…read moreJapanese I really think so....." My love for Japanese food is very well documented on other social media streams! I just can't get enough. You might think that being in Hahndorf and being amongst a massive German sausage fest of eateries that I would order some good German fare. Been there, done that and another story for another time. Many years ago my husband and I stumbled across Haru. Initially we were hesistant. The plastic displays of what food they have on offer out the front of the shop puts a lot of people off. It's actually a great conversation piece as we see people stare at them and screw up their faces! It does not do their food any justice. The staff have always been attentive and friendly. Always going above and beyond to ensure that we have had an enjoyable meal. The food is simple, but it is good and has been consistently good over the years. That is what gives my review 4 stars. It's not a huge selection, just enough for a quick dine-in experience or takeaway. The kids enjoyed their sushi rolls which are reasonably priced. I usually go down the Chicken Katsu Bento box but this time I decided to mix it up and get the Beef Teriyaki Bento. My hubby got the Seafood Tempura Bento. Whilst we waited for the food, I got my order of Iced Green Tea Latte!! Mmmmm!! The food comes out and it looks good! "Itadakimasu" For around $14 for the bento, I think it is great value. The meal comes with a decent serving of rice, a miso soup, a delicious cabbage salad with a sesame mayo dressing, a little seaweed salad and pickled ginger, two slices of sushi roll, a mini spring roll and some edamame beans. The Teriyaki Beef was sweet and salty and good. It came in a thin gravy like sauce which I poured over my rice. The Seafood Tempura box came with a few prawns, a decent sized tempura covered Atlantic Salmon piece and a few tempura vegetables. I was lucky enough to eat the vegetable components because my husband is 'allergic' to vegetables - so he says! "Gochiso-sama deshita" (It means thank you for the meal)

The karaage is one of the best I've had, and the menu is very extensive and great with a few people to share various dishes. We've tried the sashimi platter, sushi set which were both good and a few mkre dishes but I wouldn't recommend their Ramens. We also tried the spicy hot pot but keep in mind this is not the same as shabu, it does not come with thin meat. The spicy one comes with chunky pork, salmon and a chicken meatball type of thing along with cabbage and other vegetables. It also come with a transparent noodles and Ramen noodles. We got the level 3 for spice level but it almost tasted sweet. I didn't really like the dish but I would be keen to try out the wagyu shabu. Since we went in a group we got seated in the tables but the also have a bar section great for 2 people. The atmosphere is good with ambient lighting. Been there a few times and it has never been loud. Could do with some background music.

So you will probably find that each restaurant will have a different version. So, keep this in mind when you are making comparisons. Now... the moment you have been waiting for! How was the Ramen? Well... I think it is one of the best ones I have had in Adelaide. I ordered the Umami Chicken Ramen. This has a clear style broth, chicken, boiled egg, a bit of veg and noodles. It was not a complicated dish. But I think that is what I like about it. I wanted to see how good this restaurant was at making a simple broth and I was very happy. The chicken tasted like it was lightly grilled before placing in the soup. I could take a little smoky flavour. Love that! As for the venue, it is lovely. Decorated in wooden panels, with a large wooden bar and two separated dining areas. I did have my eye on the lampshades above the bar made from paper. I would love those at home! If you love watching a chef work, take a seat at the bar! The sushi prep station is there and you can watch them work while you dine. Also to note is that there is a separate bar menu to the main dining menu. So, if you are after a small dish, this might be a good option for you. If you are a fan of all things Sake and Japanese Whiskey, you will find a very impressive selection on the bar. Have a read of the drinks menu for tasting notes. If you love cocktails, there is a range of very well priced cocktails. I tried the Calpico Chuhai which had a Soju base. Yummooo!! I'm impressed with this new edition to Japanese Restaurants in Adelaide! Woo hoo!

I am never disappointed when I dine at Wasai. But, I know I have to book a table in advance as this…read moreJapanese restaurant is truly a local treasure and very popular. If you want quality Japanese and great value for money, this is the restaurant for you. Every time I go there I sample many items on the menu I am always shocked at the bill, it is very well priced! As for the best items on the menu, well it depends on what you are into. I am a huge fan of sashimi and aburi salmon, and they make both really well. Being located close to the Adelaide Central Market I think really impacts on the freshness of the fish and dishes. The sashimi is cut with great precision, not to thick or thin. Go for the sashimi boat if you want a wide selection, it is really well presented, good for groups and great value for money. If this is first time to Wasai I should probably tell you to order a boat. It is a great way to sample the menu, also you will probably get jealous when you see them delivered to other tables. Save yourself the trouble in choosing what to eat. Then fine tune your choices later, as I will guarantee you will be back. Last thing to mention is the karaage chicken. You must try the Wasai version if you like this dish. It is a lot lighter than other versions, almost like a tempura batter but with the flavoursome karaage seasonings. Sometimes you just have to treat yourself to a little JFC.

After wanting to try this place for so long, I finally managed to try it a couple of times, and holy sashimi I was not disappointed. I will even be back there again within the next fortnight, you can't keep me away! The first time I was a poor student, with another poor student, but we shared a few dishes and a drink each and it came to a measly $20 per person! And these weren't miserable, bland and small dishes either. Instead, these dishes were incredibly delicious and filling, leaving us satiated and shocked at how small the bill was when it arrived! The second time was my birthday and my Dad was paying (so still a poor student technically). We got the famous sushi and sashimi boat, after first enjoying some entrees and drinks. My absolute favourite Aburi Salmon Roll was devine, but the Takoyaki (Octopus Deep-Fried Balls) and Chicken Kaarage was also melt-in-the-mouth delicious. The sashimi and sushi was so fresh, and thoroughly impressed my Tasmanian father who's only past experience with Japanese cuisine involved a tiny take away store in Launceston (not that there is anything wrong with that)! We did find the restaurant a tad noisy, as it was very full with lots of large groups and other birthdays being celebrated, however the fast service, amazing food and cheap prices for the quality Wasai serves up makes this observation pale in comparison. Also, and this is VERY important, book a table! As every other review on here says, you might be waiting a while if you don't book, and that will be a very sad thing indeed with such lovely food so close by.
