Sometimes, you don't know what you need until you experience it.
This was the case in the Gentle Yoga class taught by EB, one of the co-owners, where all parts of me felt welcomed: physically, emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually.
Truly a change from any class I've ever been in -- in part because as I looked around the room, there was a wide range in who was there: in size, ability, and age. They write that they embrace diversity, and they do! I love that!
There was such a feeling of friendliness, from the moment I walked in, EB greeted me and showed me around. The woman next to me talked to me, which was so nice, and wished me a good class!
Everyone was different ages, and it was a small class, (only 6 of us!), which I LOVED!!!
I usually have trouble going back to yoga classes because of the huge classes, combined with the lack of connection, (which is an odd NYC subway kind of feeling!), or because it's too hard; I've always felt embarrassed about this -- and hopeful that I would find a class where I felt comfortable, at ease, and able to be myself as I am.
I found it! In this class, I instantly felt I belonged. There was a woman who did yoga in a chair! Instantly, I felt I could be where I was at physically.
The class itself began with being asked a reason for celebrating yourself, and then sharing that with the class.
I loved that intro -- far too often we focus on what's wrong or what we want to change, and this focus on what was good that had already happened was such a nice touch! I started the class with this feeling of joy and openness.
Then, EB introduced the monthly topic - dignity - vis a vis a current issue going on in the news, and asked for our feedback. I liked that an intellectual idea is combined with practical and real life issues, and we were encouraged to think in a new way about an ongoing problem. She was also real in her response -- not trying to be Buddha or anything. ;) Nice!
She offered ways to enhance or get more of a stretch in each of the poses, but, the focus was really on what fit for each participant, rather than on "doing it right," which I loved.
One of my favorite parts of the class, in addition to everything else, was that EB suggested we do savasana in the midst of the class because relaxation takes practice! SO true! I loved this! It was a welcome break, and brought me back to the reason I'd come to this class: to come back to myself. :)
She also encouraged us to come back to what dignity feels like throughout the class. And, so, the monthly topic became an embodied experience in this class. I've thought about it since. :)
I also appreciated that she had cards which read, "Touch" on one side and "No assistance" on the other, and we could flip those over, depending on our needs, and receive extra assistance or no touch. Such thoughtfulness! Then, at the end, she offered to massage our feet while in savasana, and again to use the cards.
Honestly, it was the best yoga experience I've ever had, and I've had A LOT of yoga experiences over the years.
The studio itself is beautiful! The most beautiful wood and lighting! Yes, it is more expensive than other classes I've been to; for drop-in classes, it's $19, but, it is well worth it!!!
They also offer packages and monthly programs. EB said that even though I'd already had the first class and was therefore, no longer new to the system, I could still have the new member discount if I wanted to come back, and to just come in rather than try to use the online booking system. I so appreciated that offer and thoughtfulness, again.
As others have mentioned, they also have a parking lot. So nice!
Unfold Studios really takes "Unconditional acceptance" to heart, and, I will definitely, definitely be back!!! read more
