This is really a destination cafe because if you aren't into Vic Street shopping, then there is very little reason to venture down these streets, but oh my it's totally worth it. I came across the team here at the Melbourne International Coffee Expo in May 2012 and since I come every couple of weeks to pick up a fresh bag of their delicious beans, which are roasted next door. The team does an amazing job delivering the final product, in an industrial setting. They know their product and are passionate about it. Craig Simon, their roaster was a competitor in the 2012 Barista Cup - so they've got excellent pedigree. They've just added food so you can have snacks / lunch with a decent hit. So there you go - I've just spilled my secrets and shared my favourite place in Melbourne for coffee. #yourewelcome.

The coffee was definitely dense and strong. Sadly, they did not have any vanilla flavoring, but the oat milk flavoring shined through. It's quiet inside and feels almost intimating. It's refreshing because it felt like I discovered a place I could have a cup of coffee without the annoying coffee tourists. Their coffee is intentionally roasted on a lighter spectrum which is fine by me. A perfect pour over on a Sunday. This is a place for you if you have an appreciation for speciality coffee, but if you prefer a more traditional/rich coffee then the coffee here may not be for you. There's no brunch/savoury food here, but there's a small selection of cakes and pastries from Cobb Lane. I do hope they introduce savoury food soon as I wouldn't mind having a light lunch here one day. A simple, white, bright and quiet cafe nested in an unexpected location in Collingwood.

I never use to care much for Axil coffee, but I've been turned around by this place. I feel like…read morethey have gotten a lot better at roasting over the years. The coffee is more consistent with a good body and flavour. The store is rather different to the other Axil stores. Bright white walls, nice timber, green tiles and brass details, makes for a good clean look. Some of the staff are really friendly, others are just plain rude. This store does great jaffles, although I've only had the bacon, egg, and cheese one, they all sound really good. Also reasonably priced at $6.5 for a single jaffle. I'm glad they've opened up this store as there was a bit of a hole for speciality coffee in the area. I'm also glad that they've improved their coffee.

Okay, that's enough of my bitchiness. The crew at Decoy roast their own coffee beans and they do make a pretty decent cup. The downside, however, is the food, which I found average. I had breakfast here and was only after toast, but I didn't really like the bread - it was a bit sweet and didn't have a crunchy crust. The service was really nice and I'd happily do a take-away coffee in future, but couldn't bring myself to sit in that interior again...

Years ago, as a naive coffee hating American from the south raised on buckets of Foldger's, I had no idea that coffee could be so delectably savoury, flavorful, and variant. Campo's exposed me to an entirely new culture and is still the only cafe in Melbourne that I go out of my way to visit (or that can possibly entice me to leave work early from an "upset stomach" that one time but never again because I am very responsible). I'm not sure about any other Campo's, but definitely check out the one in Carlton. Though there is no wifi and it's not pram friendly, the coffee is amazing (with multiple varieties, blends, and daily specials to choose from), the staff is knowledgable and friendly, and the food is consistently scrumptious.

From the outside, this looks like one of the crappiest Cafe I've ever been to in the city, but once inside, the atmosphere transforms into something different... The space actually feels like I'm walking into someone else's backyard! High glass ceiling, wooden furnitures, industrial vibes adorned with lush greeneries hanging throughout the restaurant - what a relaxing ambiance and the kind of place that invites you to hang a little bit longer. Originally, I came to try their famous salmon garden entree, but unfortunately they no longer have that on their menu *Sad*... So I settled for their breakfast pasta and happy to say, it doesn't disappoint in any way. The pasta comes in a pretty ceramic bowl, the presentation was fancy to the eyes, consisting of bacon, three kinds of cheese and poached egg. The dish was seriously creamy without giving you that nauseating feeling, absolutely yum! For my drink, I had the hot chocolate and it was a disappointment, slightly bitter, grainy and watered down, should have stick with the coffee, next time. The pricing was quite affordable per my Melbourne cafe standard. The service was quick and efficient, although I feel they kinda rushed you to order. But that aside, what a delicious find!!

Spinning the alley corner you are immediately greeted with giant open doors and polished floorboards, leading to an impressive counter layered with fresh coffee blends, beans barreled up and ready to be ground, and some great looking snacks to go with your caffine. This is definitely a place for coffee lovers, with various batches of beans available for purchase to take home and brew yourself. They also have a lovely seating area with a menu available for eats, but I was only stopping for coffee. And what a coffee it was! Beautifully roasted with a maple finish that made me feel like I was drinking a coffee flavoured pancake. I have no idea what magical method they use on their soy, but it was light, fluffy and sweet. So go down that dark alley and find one of Carlton's finest establishments.
