David's work is flawless- he is able to create a work of art using your body as a canvas... Never letting anyone else tattoo my body except David, but seeing the work that comes out of underskin art regularly, it is clear he hires staff that are at his artistic skill level or have the ability to achieve or exceed it. I have yet to see a piece posted by an artist that is avg here. The shop is clean, all of the staff here are nice, welcoming and make you feel comfortable. you dont starve while getting time consuming pieces lol. good vibes convo and music. love this place, highly recommend. read more

I'll make this easily readable for everyone 1) Scheduling: I did mine through Instagram... so for those by phone, should be much easier! Process was smooth and idea was discussed. I honestly was stuck between ideas for the design of my tattoo but David really worked with me to design something that I'd love. 2) Studio/Location: Easily accessible with parking. Now I work in the pharmaceutical industry and we preach aseptic practices. I had zero worries as David and other artists kept the place sanitized and comfortable! Also the artwork that's hanging around the interior of the studio is amazing: Variety of visuals! 3) Tattooing process: Tattoos hurt. I have a phobia of needles, so I can't really review pain tolerance, but David checked up on me along the way. Focused, but able to maintain humor and conversation throughout the process. I had two (8 hour) sessions and we took breaks for lunch / mental health purposes (again phobia of needles) The needle guns/tattoo guns David and the others used were legit prepped perfectly (Again, aseptic practices are critical). The ink used: Amazing quality! The humor and conversation with all the artists there really made my time go by fast! Played music, cracked jokes, told stories.... Everyone at the studio is very personable and fun! 4) Post tattoo: Saniderm was used: Great because tattoos shouldn't have too much open exposure when raw/open wounds. I was provided extra Saniderm and David offered to re-wrap it at any time! 5/5 for tattoo 5/5 for artists 5/5 for studio, ambiance, and comfort! Next one scheduled for April :) read more

I did my recon at the shop and was amazed at how clean and organized everything is which is important to me. David was patient In listening to what I wanted and helped steer me in the right direction of the decision because of the size and location of the scar. His light hand and speed made this session a breeze. Considering each visit is basically a couple hours of elective pain, they make the environment fun and the time passes quickly. Everyone is very professional and I've noticed they share business with each other based on their different areas of expertise. I remember when Under Skin opened in Bergenfield and i remember thinking thats awesome I hope this place thrives here we need more places like this in this town. Little did I know scrolling through Instagram on a random day when i was thinking about getting a tattoo in memory of my late father-in-law who had recently passed who was a fan of tattoos and had a few himself I ran across Frank O'Dowd's work and immediately I'm thinking HOLY SHIT this guy is so talented i wanna get tattooed by him...where does he work? Turns out he works in the same shop I admired a few years ago...small world. Lets fast forward to last Saturday and my experience of being tattooed at this awesome place not only does this place have a chill atmosphere everyone here is super talented and genuinely nice and it definitely helps that everyone cracks jokes and has a good time because let's face it getting tattooed is not a walk in the park...shit hurts a little lol. Everyone is super welcoming and makes you feel like you've known them forever. They were admiring each others work and being supportive of one another you can really tell these artists have a true friendship and bond with one another. Lets talk about Frank, from the very beginning I was really stoked that he would be the one who would translate my late father-in-laws pegasus tattoo this was definitely very important to me, well let me tell you that Frank not only exceeded my expectations he gained a customer for life. He is not only talented he is passionate about being an artist and he truly loves what he does, its really hard to find that these days. People get jaded by money and popularity and Frank just really loves what he does. He listened to what i wanted and made suggestions about what would look good and how we can add to the piece in the future(I'm working on a full sleeve). Despite some of my whining when he was tattooing a sensitive spot he didn't get upset or annoyed he actually made me laugh and kept the conversation going to keep me distracted and gave me breaks whenever i needed it, can't brag about this guy enough highly recommended as well as the other artists there is no shortage of talent here. I've come here a few times, each with a new hope for an amazing, well done tattoo. I don't necessarily think it's the artists "fault" per say, but all 3 small/medium sized tattoos I've gotten here have faded in less than six months. I've gotten 5 other pieces from different parlors around the US and I feel like Under Skin uses cheaper ink on smaller uncolored pieces that take minutes to complete. I've never had tattoos fade the way my three from Under Skin have. I recently just went back for my third tattoo, I got it done this past Friday (four days ago), and it's already fading. Some lines are disappearing while others are thick and noticeable. When I went in to get this tattoo, I even spoke to two of the artists about going over another one I have behind my ear. Jessica asked me who did the tattoo (it was Jimmy), I told her & he was there with her- no one else in the shop- but neither of them offered what the shop promises as a free touch up. I'm just disappointed because the tattoos mean so much to me, but this shop doesn't seem to go out of their way to use good ink that will stay visible for a long time, none the less take five minutes to touch it up for me. I mean four days and my newest is already noticeably faded???? Come on! Sad :( ** update 5/30/17 ** Jessa reached out to me to fix these tattoos. I was so happy and so grateful! She was super nice about fixing them, had me come in the next day and took her time going over them both. Now they look great, couldn't be any happier! I love these little pieces and I'm glad I can go to this local parlor for a job well done, and a great touch up if need be. Jessa you rock! read more

What a great experience I had with Under Skin Art Tattoo shop! I recently just got my first tattoo here on a whim with two of my girlfriends and needless to say I was pretty friggen terrified at the thought of a tattoo (I hate needles) but with the help of my friends and my tattoo artist Jessa Bigelow the process was painless. The shop is extremely clean and the artists really take the time out to make sure they understand what you want and that you are happy with the placement. The staff members here are really cool and down to earth people who are easy to talk to and being that we were there for a few hours with everyone getting tattooed it was nice to be able to have a conversation to make the time pass. I was so scared about getting a tattoo but Jessa was really sweet and made me feel so comfortable about getting it and didn't pressure me at all. The way she tattoos so delicately I barely felt it being done and it was over in no time. I'm so happy with my ity bity little heart I'm actually already thinking about getting another one! Went to get my retouch for my eyebrows which it was supposed to be included in what I paid for my first session ($450) and this girl Shaneen completely forgot to tell me I have to pay $150 for the retouch (2nd appointment ) and just mention it at the end of the appointment!??? Not professional at all and also mention that happened with another costumer because she forgot ???! , long story short I ended paying the $150 but so disappointed, not coming back ever ! I am thrilled with this tattoo shop. I have had work done is several places and this is by far my favorite shop. I have had my last four pieces done here, all with Jessa Bigelow. First the basics - the shop is very clean, the artists walk you through the process and really take the time to make sure you are 100% satisfied with drawing and placement before starting the tattoo. They don't make you feel rushed at all. I think we moved my shoulder stencil a dozen times until I was sure. The shop is also great for tattoo newbies. Some shops can be intimidating, not the case here. It is warm and friendly, you can tell the artists get along really well. Personally I need a comfortable atmosphere since I know I'll be there for a few hours. There's a parking lot right across the street too, which is convenient. I am so pleased with all of my work. I actually turned my shoulder piece into a half sleeve and it is almost completed. Jessa does a great job of taking my mind off of the actual tattooing and the time in the chair just flies by. She has done my last four pieces and we are already thinking about what's next. I have recommended this shop to my friends and family and will continue to do so. The shop is also reasonably priced and the work is quality. It's also nice to know there's a female artist available, which is not always easy to find. I had the chance to meet David before the shop opening, and I got my first big piece done with him, let me say I don't trust anyone else but this shop. They are great people and truly listen to your ideas. To start off with the owner David, he's a great guy, I enjoy getting tattooed by him. I am a very indecisive person, and I over think everything, so David always makes sure my tattoo will be perfect and it is, it's been a year and I still get compliments on my shoulder piece, it's a work of art. His speciality is Japanese, and portraits, I seriously recommend him too all my friends he's great! As for Jess she's great with her line and dot work, her pieces are beautiful, actually one of the best I've seen and I plan on getting something done by her too, now for Drew he specializes in traditional and his art work is hung around the place it's really great too! I think the other David specialty is also black & gray I'm not sure. But overall this places has the best tattoo artists and they all specialize in something different so it's great!
