It's a little out of the way from the main vineyards of the Yarra Valley, but is definitely worth a detour on your way to/from the Valley. I'd suggest allowing plenty of time for tastings here, as there are a huge variety of wines to sample, including some muscats and masalas which are to die for! Being a small family run business, the service here is friendly and personal, and all of the staff that I've encountered here have been incredibly passionate about their wines. The wood fired pizzas available here are delicious! If you have a group visiting the vineyard, it is possible to pre-arrange food such as cheese/fruit boards, and Dorothy (one of the owners) is only more than happy to accommodate any special requests. The vineyard is really picturesque - the handmade sandstone building creates an inviting area for tastings, and there is also an outdoor seating area which is lovely to be able to enjoy a glass or two of wine and look out across the vineyard. This place is definitely worth a stop if you're in the area!

It looks like the menu changes from time to time and the blackboard showed a selection of dishes and starters. There were two meat options for main, those being chicken or pork, with another two vegetarian options. I chose the pork to go along with my Pinot noir and my wife had the grilled asparagus. The pork was roasted and very nice. Peas and broad beans accompanied along with a minty salsa verde. The winner of lunch however was the goats curd on my wife's plate. It was amazing! I would recommend this place and definitely come back. That said, there are many many options in the area. Booking ahead is a must. There are several 2/4 person tables and a couple of long tables. Walk-ins seem to get seated at the long tables. Groups are catered for and on the day we were there, there was a party group downstairs among the oak barrels.

There was a special menu on that day - so I'm not entirely sure if they regularly do food or if this, like the menu, was specific to the event. Still, we settled in by one of the two fires and enjoyed a MASSIVE glass of Chardonnay. Bottles are sold in the restaurant at cellar door prices, making it exceptional value. Food options were home style comfort cooking and also reasonably priced. The staff that attended to us at both the tasting and in the restaurant were helpful and chatty - great country hospitality. Put this on your list if you're touring through this wine region.

Curly Flat is out of the way, far from main towns or other vineyards, so only the truly dedicated…read morewine enthusiasts will probably find themselves here. But your effort will be rewarded. They're only open on the weekend, and at around 80 minutes from Melbourne it's possible to pay a visit on a nice day when you want a drive out in the countryside. They can also do a tasting on other days, but you'll need to ring ahead and make an appointment. In winter you will be warmly greeted and encouraged to sit where you like. There's no stand-up cellar door bar but rather large tables and chairs and multiple sofas by the warm and inviting fire. Watch out though, the resident cats love these spots too so be sure not to sit on them! A tasting here is relaxed, friendly and as in-depth as you want it to be. As we were the only ones there during our visit, we got to ask a lot of questions about their methods of wine making and the history of particular vintages. Pro tip: sign up for their newsletter for information about new releases and special events.
