He even spent some time teaching me beard basics so I knew how to upkeep it properly. The shop was very clean and orderly and the staff were calm and the atmosphere was relaxing. This wasn't the end of the interaction, when I got done I bought some of his beard salve which was very nice smelling and works very well... however when I got to my car to leave... MY CAR WOULDN'T START! Brad came out and helped me troubleshoot my car and I was eventually able to leave after I fixed a simple trouble code that was locking the car up. So honestly this is a GOOD group of people looking out for their fellow humans in this world of constant misdirection. So 10 out of 10 I recommend just as is, but the extra stuff made them way more awesome then I expected.

They've recently did a overnight building swap with Jr's also owned hot dog restaurant Weiner King. I personally haven't tried that spot yet but I heard they have great food for a easy on the wallet price. This place isn't a great clips so you sometimes may have to wait for haircut because, they are trying to provide the whole traditional barber experience. So if they are busy just come at a different time at give them a shot. Suggestions- Just say you want a Joe Navy Haircut or a High and tight Jr will know what to do. John's is a great place to sit and be part of the conversation led by John with other customers. John has a good historical knowledge of Fernandina. His dad retired after working in the shop for 42 years. My first time and it did not feel that way as I was included as if I was a regular. Now to the haircut. John is a craftsman who takes his time. His attention to detail is very good. I watched other customers come out of the chair pleased at John's skill. I was pleased with my haircut and all the things I learned. I will go back.

I ended up with a 1959 general purpose haircut- short, tight "sidewalls," small wave in the front. Cheap though about $14 for a haircut. Conversation was small town interesting- John knows everybody's name going back years. Had a problem with all the "Trump" signs... meant I wasn't going to talk politics while a guy was cleaning up my neck with a straight razor! Old calendars on the wall, straight razor and strop, golf on TV, dusty old magazines, miss-matched vinyl and steel chairs, that funny barber shop antiseptic smell. Yup, 1959! Not sure I want to go back to the old days but if you do then this is the place.
