For years I've been traveling all the way to Jacksonville to get my haircut at a real barbershop…read more Then recently about a year ago I discovered this barbershop located off A1A. The barbershop is called Midtown classic cuts but for those that have been around a while you may remember it as Crumps Barbershop. My haircut is consistently done exactly as I like it and at a very reasonable price. I almost hate to leave a good review for fear that the place will become so popular that I'll have to make a reservation months in advance. But all kidding aside this is your best bet if you're looking for a barbershop versus a beauty salon. Trust me you will not regret coming to this barber. As others have stated it is cash only so make sure you stop by Publix on the way in to get a Pub sub and some cash from their ATM on your way to the barber.

I went in for a beard trim, and Brad was my assigned barber. He took his time to sculpt my beard to…read morethe exact way I wanted. He even spent some time teaching me beard basics so I knew how to upkeep it properly. The shop was very clean and orderly and the staff were calm and the atmosphere was relaxing. This wasn't the end of the interaction, when I got done I bought some of his beard salve which was very nice smelling and works very well... however when I got to my car to leave... MY CAR WOULDN'T START! Brad came out and helped me troubleshoot my car and I was eventually able to leave after I fixed a simple trouble code that was locking the car up. So honestly this is a GOOD group of people looking out for their fellow humans in this world of constant misdirection. So 10 out of 10 I recommend just as is, but the extra stuff made them way more awesome then I expected.

If your familiar with Navy Bar's this is a Navy Barbershop, other than that you have the feel of a small town barber. This place isn't a great clips so you sometimes may have to wait for haircut because, they are trying to provide the whole traditional barber experience. I have been looking for a good barber having experienced negative experiences twice…read more John's Barber Shop is located in Fernandina neighboring a tattoo parlor, the Pampered Pooch, and the Nassau County Democratic Party. John's is a great place to sit and be part of the conversation led by John with other customers. John has a good historical knowledge of Fernandina. His dad retired after working in the shop for 42 years. My first time and it did not feel that way as I was included as if I was a regular. Now to the haircut. John is a craftsman who takes his time. His attention to detail is very good. I watched other customers come out of the chair pleased at John's skill. I was pleased with my haircut and all the things I learned. I will go back.

I ended up with a 1959 general purpose haircut- short, tight "sidewalls," small wave in the front. Cheap though about $14 for a haircut. Conversation was small town interesting- John knows everybody's name going back years. Had a problem with all the "Trump" signs... meant I wasn't going to talk politics while a guy was cleaning up my neck with a straight razor! Old calendars on the wall, straight razor and strop, golf on TV, dusty old magazines, miss-matched vinyl and steel chairs, that funny barber shop antiseptic smell. Yup, 1959! Not sure I want to go back to the old days but if you do then this is the place.

When I went in with him later that afternoon, I was greeted, but then sat for at least 45 minutes as I saw barbers walk up to the front and either personally walk or invite at least 3 people that came AFTER ME for their cuts. Meanwhile, my son and I kept waiting with no explanation of the process. When I finally decided to get up and head for the door, that is when one of the barbers came to the front to say that someone would get with my son soon - at that point, too late.
