I've been shopping here for decades. It's been my go to store for gardening supplies, seed, plants, and fertilizer. This year I bought grass seed for a small project. It didn't germinate. I approached the manager and he basically told me I didn't know what I was doing. I'm a retired landscaper and have seeded hundreds of lawns, my first was in 1980. I know what I'm doing. To make matters worse, I entered the store when during business hours, with the neon sign flashing 'OPEN', after explaining the situation and showing him pictures of his seed (bare ground) and seed from another store that germinated and filled in, he told me to come back during business hours. I was dumbfounded. Take a look around the store. If you're buying fertilizer, you'll be ok. But if you're buying anything perishable, BEWARE. It could be years old and worthless. Take a look at their vegetable seeds. There are no expiration dates on the packages. At any other store that sells seeds it will say "for the year 20xx" "discard after November 20xx" on the package. Not at Uncle Lukes, they could be selling last years seed, maybe even from the year before that. You won't know until weeks after you planted and the growing season in Michigan is short. I don't know what has happened to Uncle Lukes. But the lost a long time customer. read more

A loyal customer for over 40 years - I had been supplying Luke's with their fully decorated Christmas wreaths for over 10 years. Last year they charged over 50% markup to what they paid me. This year, I asked for $25 per wreath, they quickly sold 4 for $35 each, then told me they would not honor the $25 price due to some people paying with credit cards! They then claimed 2 of my wreaths were "stolen" from near the back door. DONNA (the new owner/manager?) no longer wants to sell my wreaths. Prices too high!!! Compare Luke's prices to the Tractor Store in Rochester Hills. You will save $2 per bag on corn. Same with feed, seeds, salt, etc.... Will definitely never go back to Luke's. read more

Uncle Luke's in Troy has been around since the 1920s. It's a different feel from going to a Home Depot or Lowe's. I'm so glad I stopped by and will continue to support this small business. The staff is friendly and there are items you can find here that you can't find at larger stores. There are also some great deals. I bought a gallon of molasses for only $6.99. It's so much cheaper than getting it at the grocery store. The worker also gave me a few tips for activating effective microorganisms. I highly recommend Uncle Luke's for your gardening and farming needs. read more

don't shop at this store, they lie about the prices! I usually get 1000 meal worms for about 9 bucks, they were out of the 1000 so I was had to take two 500 ct when I asked if they were the same price he said unfortunately it's two dollars more. I said whatever and paid, I realized after I left it was $2 more each container, I paid an extra $4 for the same amount of worms I normally get. I called the store, nothing they would do, when I said I wouldn't be back, they're response, well, good luck to you! guess they don't appreciate loyal customers. I'll be getting my seeds, peanuts, pet supplies and meal worms from someplace else from now on! read more

I have driven past this place many times, but in the hopes of avoiding the crowds at our normal greenhouses, we decided to make an early morning trip to this store. This place offered a nice variety of tomato, cucumber, pepper, and other fruits and veggies. More importantly the vibe of this place is super positive, local and very welcoming. After making our initial purchases, we decided to take another look and purchased a new bird feeder and the owner ended up give us a sack seed for free. This place may not be the most polished place, but the sure do the little things very well. As such, they have earn our loyalty. read more

My mom loves this place! She's a gardener and I've had to take her here a few times to get stuff for the yard that she can't find anywhere else. The staff here is super helpful and they are open early. The place isn't huge, and it's as clean as it can be for a garden center. They have all kinds of goodies in the isles for horses, cats, dogs, birds and even deer feed! Pretty cool spot but parking is limited. read more

Really cool little store. The doors are always open and they have a store dog and cat that hangs around. Staff are very helpful! I monthly go in to get two bags of chicken feed, and an employee has always helped me load it into the truck. They may not be as talkative as a regular retail store, but the customer service is always on point. Gives a sort of country general store vibe, and I dig it! read more

Service is excellent, with the employees giving advice and helping you load items into your vehicle. I'm not sure if Uncle Luke's has changed but knowledge base gone way downhill. Called to see if fall fertilizer came in and told not sure but some "newstuff" with high nitrogen just came in. Went into store and told I absolutely did not want nitrogen. Went to Lowe's and got Scotts. Formula for fall fertilizer was high nitrogen. read more

My favorite (and normally only) place to buy quality pet food like Wellness. They're the only place around that carries the large cans of Wellness cat food and keeps them in stock. Talk about great customer service: An employee is quick carry it out to the trunk for me and help me find cases on the pallet if they haven't been unloaded yet. I get a kick out of the big black and white tomcat that's usually sitting to the right of the register. They offer lollipops to the kids if they're in tow also. They're always on the lookout for the black lab roaming around. They also have a good selection of hanging plants in late spring and onion starts, etc for your gardening needs. Lots of organic options. It takes me back to when I was a wee one and Troy was "the country". read more

I made my first trip to Uncle Luke's today and it am a happy little gardener! Uncle Luke's owner, whose name is not Luke, is an organic gardener and the store carries lots of things that you wont find at the big garden centers. I was delighted to find an organic fungicide, Serenade, that neither English Gardens nor Bordines stocks. Prices are reasonable, the staff is knowledgeable and the selection is great. It's not fancy and it does not need to be. I'll be back! read more

I originally went to Uncle Luke's looking for Halloween / October-ish decorations: hay, gourds, cornstalks, that sort of thing. Luke's had all this and more, which made me come back in warmer months. I'm glad I found all the aforementioned things in one place. I was really hoping I didn't have to drive out to some farm in the middle of nowhere just to snag the stuff for cheap (and are there really places around town that don't charge an arm and a leg for the same stuff, if they even have it?) It's only a 30 minute drive from home, and that's good enough for me! I came back in spring because they had a pretty cool setup; in addition to supplying me with October-ish stuff, they had a nursery fully stocked with flowers, along with super cheap gardening supplies, mulch, dirt, plus woodchips and a whole slew of "feed" for just about any woodland creature you could think of. Now I know where those nutters with the huge bird feeders and squirrel feeders and whatever-else-feeders go to get their feed. They go here! It's a small place, but definitely packed full of lots of supplies. I was pleased with the prices of the gardening supplies in particular; you'll be able to get a bag of top soil a couple bucks cheaper than big nurseries, and the woodchips were an absolute steal. If you're looking to spruce up the front of your house with some plants, then come to Luke's for the bare necessities. Luke won't let you down! read more

Support this location because everyone who works there is great! They are all very helpful if you have questions ranging from gardening tips to soil to feed. I buy all my veggie plants here and have had great outcome every year. I will say get there early when they start filling up their shelves because they do get busy and products get bought quickly. Prices are very reasonable. Also if you have pets like guinea pigs, chickens etc. they will have feed and hay that you will be very happy you stopped by. Looking forward to late spring so I can get my garden going. Also there usually is their mascot of a dog there he super friendly so you don't have to worry about him. This is my trusted garden friend and advisor. In the summer the plantings are robust and sure to provide success. In the winter I feed my feathered friends with their bird food. Our local squirrels have the most beautiful pelts and our feathered friends are loyal and assist us in our organic gardening by eating pests.
